Mrs C Haynes

Haverfordwest

THE death occurred suddenly on July 9 at her home in St Anthony’s Way, Haverfordwest, of Mrs Christina Haynes ‘Tina’. She was 84.

Christina Haynes was born on Christmas Day 1928 to Mary and William Jones, of Milford Road, in Haverfordwest, and she was one of six children. Though she had been named Christina, as she had born at Christmas, she was always known to her friends and family as Tina.

As a child she attended St Thomas Church and the St Thomas School Room, where she particularly enjoyed English and poetry. After leaving school she started work in Market Street in Haverfordwest as a retail assistant.

It was at a dance held at Brawdy in 1953 that she met her husband, Peter, who was working as an aircraft engineer for Airwork, and they got married in 1955 at St Martin’s Church, Haverfordwest.

Following their marriage they moved to Blackwater, near Camberley in Surrey, and she started work for MicroCell as a progress chaser in their office.

She enjoyed travelling with Peter and visiting different parts of the country and Europe, and spent many holidays in Cobh, in Ireland, where Peter’s parents had retired.

They also enjoyed sailing their boat on the Thames and taking it on trips.

In 1963 they moved to Hartley Wintney in Hampshire, where their daughter, Caroline, was born and she became a member of the WI and an active member of their drama club. During their time in Hartley Wintney Tina ran the school library and also was a dinner lady at the local primary school.

Following Peter’s death in 1975 at the age of 46, Tina moved back to Haverfordwest with Caroline to a new bungalow at Elm Park in Crundale.

Though she had not been able to drive before the move she took on the task with a determined vigour, and helped by her brother, John, she passed her test at the age of 47.

She started work at County Stores, helping in the office and the shop, and joined the WI in Crundale and Towns Women’s Guild. She was also involved with the Conservative Association.

Just before she retired she decided to move back into Haverfordwest, where she continued to remain active by undertaking fundraising for Barnardo’s and also working for many years as a volunteer in the WRVS canteen at the magistrates’ court. She also became an active member of Haverfordwest Ladies Choir and also Friends in Harmony, and enjoyed not only performing and giving concerts but meeting her friends.

Tina’s greatest joy was the birth of her grandchildren, with Laura in 1987 and Guy in 1992, and she looked after them while her daughter, Caroline, was at work.

After Tina first became ill the family all moved into St Anthony’s Way, and though she had some periods of very poor health she would bounce back and continued to remain as active as she could by joining the Civic Society, and also was a regular member of Probus. When she was able she enjoyed trips to Haverfordwest, shopping and meeting friends, and especially her sister, Jane.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Caroline and Michael Noott (daughter and son-in-law); Laura and Guy Noott (grandchildren); Jane Jones (sister); Emlyn and Enid Jones (brother and sister-in-law); Margaret Jones (sister-inlaw); Nicola Legge, Simon and Jackie Jones, Lyndon and Nikki Jones, Rachel and Colin Evans (nieces, nephews and spouses).

The service was held at St Mary’s Church, Haverfordwest, followed by interment at City Road Cemetery, and was officiated by Father Graham Lloyd, and was attended by the many friends Tina had made over the years. The bearers were Michael Noott, Guy Noott, Lyndon Jones and Colin Evans. Caroline read a tribute to her mother and Caroline and Laura also read poems at the service, with a reading undertaken by Rachel Evans.

There were family flowers only with donations in lieu for the Stroke Association or Barnardo’s to be sent to Caroline Noott, 14 St Anthony’s Way, Haverfordwest. Roy Folland and Son, Haverfordwest carried out the funeral arrangements.
