Mr M J Clark

Pembroke

THE death occurred at Whitehall Avenue, Pembroke, of Mr Michael John Clark (Mick) on July 15.

Originally from Malta, he was a navigation officer for the Ministry of Defence and had also been in the Merchant Navy.

His main interest was love of his family, love of animals, walking the beach daily with his dog Harri and meeting with friends.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Hazel (wife); Debbie, Jackie and Michelle (daughters); John and Jonathan (sons-inlaw); Christopher, Samantha, Laura, Sian, Luke, James, Sara and Emma (grandchildren); Jack and Niamh (great-grandchildren) plus numerous extended families, close neighbours and friends.

The service was held at St Mary’s R C Church, Pembroke Dock followed by interment at Llanion cemetery and was officiated by Father Patrick Fitzgerald-Lombard.

The bearers were John, Jonathan, Stuart, Steve, Simon, Christopher and James.

There were family flowers only with donations in lieu if desired for the local animal welfare which may be sent c/o E C Thomas and Son, funeral directors, Zoar Chapel Funeral Home, Llanteg, Narberth SA67 8QH, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

 

Ms E A Elliott

Pennar

THE sudden death of Elizabeth Ann Elliott, known as Betty, occurred at Withybush Hospital on July 16. She was predeceased by her sister Sheila on July 11.

Born and brought up in Pennar, she lived with her mother Elsie and two sisters Sheila and Valerie. When the girls grew up and married, they all lived in close proximity enabling their own children to grow up together and remain a close family.

Betty met and married ‘Geordie’ Bill Elliott and had two daughters, Susan and Julie. Betty was very family orientated, and showed a great interest in the lives of her daughters, grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was a good listener and nothing was too much trouble.

Sheila and Betty followed Val into cleaning services at Texaco where Betty remained as supervisor until her retirement. She loved gardening and has greatly enjoyed using the greenhouse given to her by work colleagues on her retirement.

The funeral took place at St Patricks Church, Pennar, Pembroke Dock and was officiated by Rev Nicky Skipworth followed by interment in Llanion Cemetery.

The principal mourners were Geordie Elliott (husband); Susan and Paul (daughter and son-in-law); Julie and David (daughter and son-in-law); Stephen and Sophie (grandson and wife); Lisa and Andrew (granddaughter and partner); Gareth and Danielle (grandson and partner); Rosie, Riley and Jenson (great-grandchildren); Valerie and Peter (sister and brother-in-law) plus many relatives, too numerous to mention.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by J Roberts and Son, Pembroke Dock, who showed great patience and support to the families in arranging a joint funeral.

 

Mr M S Palmer

Kilgetty

THE death of Mr Martin Spencer Palmer, aged 81, of Millfields Close, Kilgetty, occurred on August 8 at Withybush Hospital, where he had been a patient since May 14.

A native of Aberdare, Martin moved to Pentlepoir when he was four. He served as a chief electrical engineering office in the Merchant Navy and then served as a petty officer in the Royal Navy over a period of nine years. After leaving the navy, he worked at the Pendine Experimental Establishment. Before retiring, he worked as a maths teacher at Greenhill Comprehensive School, Tenby.

As a young man, Martin played football for Greenhill School and his other interests were golf, cricket and bridge. He was also treasurer of Amroth Church for many years.

Martin was predeceased by his wife Gwyneth Jane Palmer (nee Ellis) in January 2012.

They had been married for 53 years.

The funeral took place at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth on August 19, followed by interment at Zoar Chapel, Llanteg. Hugh-John Wilson officiated and the bearers were E. C. Thomas and Sons.

Principal mourners and family left to mourn are: Margaret Anne McPherson and Patricia Jane McEvoy (nieces), who both live in Australia; and many friends and other relatives.

There were family flowers only, but donations, if so desired, for the Alzheimers Society may be sent to E. C.

Mr B Phillips

Pembroke

BYRON Phillips died at Withybush Hospital on July 16, aged 80.

He was born in Redberth where he attended the village school before moving to Tenby (Greenhill ) Grammar School. After secondary school Byron joined the GPO as an apprentice engineer. He remained with this company for 40 years receiving a commendation certificate for his dedication, work and service to what was to become British Telecom.

He spent his National Service in Egypt working with the Signals Regiment. On leaving the army he became a member of the Cresselly branch of The Royal British Legion, an organisation he supported for the rest of his life.

Byron was a keen sportsman.

In his youth he played football for Tenby Rovers and later with Carew Football Club. This was to be the start of a long association with football at Carew which lasted for nearly 60 years. He played football for Carew, he was club secretary for 20 years and up to the time of his passing, was Club President.

As a mark of respect for all he had done for sport in Carew, a minute silence was held before the cricket match at Carew on July 20.

Like his father before him Byron was a Church Warden of St. Mary’s Church, Reberth. He was a regular worshipper at St Mary’s and worked tirelessly in maintaining the Church and raising funds for its work in the community. Although he retired to live in Pembroke in 1991, he continued to worship in Redberth Church and the wider Benefice of Carew.

Parc Gwyn Crematorium was filled to overflowing for his funeral service on July 23. His coffin was preceded by The British Legion Flag and the bearers were Steven Lewis and Richard Griffiths, Daniel Cherry (nephews), David, Barry and Michael Lewis (life-long friends). The service was led by The Venerable Graham Davies who spoke of Byron’s wealth of character, his unassuming nature and his sense of work and service to the community.

He was assisted by Canon Sharon Swain who also officiated at the interment of ashes in Redberth Church the following day.

Those left to mourn Byron are his wife May, who had supported him steadfastly during his illness, and his dear sister Brenda, together with brothers and sisters-inlaw, nephews and nieces and lifelong friends.

Byron will be sadly missed.

Miss W J Thomas

Cresswell Quay

THE death of Miss Winifred Jane Thomas, known as Nin, of Kiln Cottage, Cresswell Quay, Cresselly, Kilgetty, occurred on August 8 at Tenby Cottage Ward, Park House Court, Tenby, after a stay of three weeks. She was 94.

A native of Cresswell Quay, Nin joined the Red Cross during the war, working in Weston Super Mare, Boncath and Pembroke Dock, where her friendly and caring nature helped many. She then became a shop assistant for the Morgan family at Borough Stores in Pembroke Dock, then the Peter family, who renamed it Captain Hook Delicatessen.

She retired in 1984, aged 65.

Nin enjoyed reading, doing crosswords and puzzles and was a great knitter. She had a long-standing interest in the swans at Cresswell Quay, feeding them regularly and she supported a swan sanctuary in Norfolk. Nin also supported a retirement home for ponies.

Pisgah Baptist Chapel and Sunday School played a large part in Nin’s life. She was a Sunday School teacher, then became secretary and superintendent.

She was also president of the sisterhood and a life deacon of the chapel.

She was a loyal and generous friend to many.

Nin’s contentment in life and her kindness to many families in the community made her a special person who will never be forgotten.

The funeral took place at Pisgah Baptist Chapel, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, Narberth. Rev David Gooding officiated.

Principal mourners and family left to mourn are: Sheena and Michael Howitt (niece and husband); Nigel and Rachael Howitt (greatnephew and wife); Neville and Ross Newton (greatnephew, husband and son of the late Glenda (niece); Sheila and Eric Jones; Mary Roberts, Elizabeth and Neville Farmer (cousins).

Unable to attend were: Doris and Eric Feetham (cousin); Ross Newton; and Mary Roberts.

The bearers were Robert Scourfield, Steven Williams, Nigel Howitt, and Dr Roger Paul.
