Neyland

MISS Margaret J Joyce, late of Fleming Way, Honeyborough, Neyland, died peacefully in her sleep on September 15 at Withybush Hospital.

Margaret was 84 and had lived happily at Torestin Care Home for the last two years. She was born in Milford Haven in 1929 and lived most of her childhood at ‘Saith Erw’, North Road. She was the last of five children born to Aimee and Bob Joyce, her sister and three brothers having predeceased her.

Margaret attended Milford Haven Grammar School, and on leaving joined the Post Office for a short period. She then took up nursing training at Cardiff Royal Infirmary, where she obtained her SRN in 1950. In 1952 she became a Queens District Nurse in Cardiff and then in 1953 a staff nurse in County Hospital, Haverfordwest. From September 1953 to September 1969 Margaret joined the QARANC, reaching the rank of major and obtaining her sister-Tutors Diploma after a two-year course in London.

Margaret served in Northern Ireland, Germany and Malaya, and left the army in 1969 to nurse her mother.

From 1971 until 1984 she was a sister-Tutor for the Dyfed Health Authority, working in Llanelli, Glangwili and Withybush Hospitals.

Margaret was also a very keen member of Neyland WI and interested in marquetry, tatting, quilting and gardening, until she suffered a severe stroke which left her paralysed down her left side.

The funeral service was held at St Clements, Neyland, on September 24,ith the Rev Alan Chadwick officiating, followed by interment at Milford Haven cemetery. The bearers were her great-nephews, Ian Swales, Stephen Brown, Symon Brown and Bertie Brown.

The principal mourners were Norman and Mary Brown, Julian and Penny Brown (nephews and nieces) Helen Joyce and Aileen Joyce (sisters-in-law); Ian Swales, Marion and Julian Cornwell, Stephen Brown, Susan Bengtson, Symon Brown and Bertie Brown (great-nephews and nieces); Marion John and June Miller (friends). Unable to attend, Owen and Jane Brown and family, Louise Roberts, Jonathan Bengston and Jane Wardlaw.

There were family flowers only, but donations if desired to The Friends of Torestin, c/o The Manager, Torestin Nursing Home, Tiers Cross, Haverfordwest.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons Ltd, Milford Haven.

 

Mrs C M Sullivan

Formerly of Camrose

THE funeral took place at Basingstoke Crematorium on September 20 of Mrs Charmaine Mary Sullivan (nee Mabe) aged 43, who passed away suddenly in Mumbai, India, on September 10.

Charmaine was the eldest child of David and Janet Mabe, Salvador, Camrose, and sister of twin brothers Stewart and Stephen.

Charmaine was educated at Roch Primary School, where she was an outstanding athlete.

She then attended Sir Thomas Picton School and went on to train as an accountant at Basingstoke University, and joined an accountancy firm in Basingstoke, where she met her future husband, Tony.

Charmaine and Tony married in 2002 and had two children, Connor and Francesca.

In February this year Tony’s work took him to India, where he was joined by Charmaine and the children.

The sudden passing of Charmaine has shocked the whole community, which was evident by the large attendance at the funeral. The chief mourners were Tony (widower); Connor and Francesca (children); David and Janet (parents); Stewart, Stephen and Amy (brothers and partner); Marion (mother-in-law); Linda and Danny (sister-inlaw and brother-in-law); Flo (grandmother-in-law) and other family members too numerous to mention. Unable to attend were Bryn and Hilda Turley (grandparents).

Mr W J Richards

Haverfordwest

MR William James Richards, of Dale Road, Haverfordwest, passed away peacefully at Withybush Hospital at the age of 97 on September 13.

He was born at Little Hasguard Farm in 1916 and spent all his working life there until his retirement, when he and his wife, Noreen, moved to Little Hasguard Cottage in 1993.

He maintained his interest in the family’s dairy farm and became a keen gardener and enjoyed family life.

Along with his wife he attended North Road Baptist Church until ill- health prevented him.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Noreen Richards (widow); Peter and Paul Richards (sons); Katharine and Martin Jones (daughter and sonin- law); Simon and Alison Richards (son and daughterin- law); Rebecca, Rachel, Hannah, Adam, Lorna, Alice, John, Jennifer and Jemima (grandchildren), plus many nephews and nieces too numerous to mention.

The service was held at North Road Baptist Church followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn and was officiated by Mrs Margaret Price. The bearers were Christopher Tasker and David Charles (nephews); Andrew George and Lloyd Davies (friends).

Donations in lieu of flowers for the North Road Baptist Church may be sent to Mrs A Miles, 53 Mount Pleasant Way, Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire.

Mr R Ridley

Pembroke Dock

THE death occurred peacefully at home on September 5 of Mr Robert (Bob) Ridley, of Charles Thomas Avenue, Pembroke Dock. He was 86.

Originally from New Herrington, Co Durham, he was an apprentice as a marine fitter at Hancocks Shipbuilders, Pembroke Dock. He was called up for National Service, receiving his papers on Christmas Eve 1944 at the age of 18. After basic training at Caterham Barracks he went to Palestine, where he drove a ration truck around the Middle East for four years.

He maintained strong links to the Welsh Guards until his death.

Following his National Service he worked for the Admiralty.

In 1964 Bob was the first fitter taken on at the new Regent Refinery, now Valero. He retired from Texaco as area engineer in 1983. He continued to work locally for several engineering companies until he permanently retired in 1991.

Bob was an extremely capable workman, he built his own home at Golden Hill, Pembroke, and could turn his hand to any DIY task for his own family and the wider community. He was a member of the Welsh Guards Association, Pembroke Dock Harlequins Rugby Club and South Pembs Golf Club.

A lifelong member of St Mary’s Catholic Church, Pembroke Dock. His devoted service was recognised by the presentation of the Benemerenti medal.

He was predeceased by his wife, Dilys Ridley (nee Johns) in 2002.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Michael Ridley (son); Peter and Mary (son and daughterin- law); Catherine and Emyr (daughter and son-in-law); Cecilia and Neville (daughter and son-in-law); Amanda Ridley, Nia Jones, David Ridley, Sophie Harris and Joseph Harris (grandchildren); Susan Ridley, John Ridley, William and Jan Ridley, Carol Burns, Christopher Ridley, Paul Ridley (nephews and nieces); Barbara Brown (cousin).

The service was held at St Mary’s Catholic Church, Pembroke Dock, followed by interment at Llanion Cemetery, Pembroke Dock. It was officiated by Father John Patrick Thomas. The bearers were John Ridley, William Ridley, Paul Ridley, Christopher Ridley (nephews); Emyr Jones and Neville Harries (sons-in-law).

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Neil Roberts, Pembroke Dock.

 

Mr R John

Pembroke Dock

MR Roger John, of Wavell Crescent, Pembroke Dock, passed away in hospital on August 27. He was 65. Originally from Hodgeston, he worked as a farm worker when he left school. He then went in the army. He served with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers in Hong Kong and Singapore.

When he returned he went to Northern Ireland, where he served for two and a half years. This was followed by several jobs including as a milkman, and postman, until he found his calling as a chef.

He retired two years ago from Bluestone. He enjoyed playing golf and walking.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Susan John (widow); Nathan John, Natalie John and Sabrina John (children) David Backhouse and Victoria Backhouse (stepson and stepdaughter); Rita Allen (sister); Ann and Bradley Perry (sister and brother-in-law); Peter and Margery Leeming (father and mother-in-law); Keith Backhouse (daughterin- law); Richard Bennett (son-in-law) plus family from England.

The service was held at St John Church, Pembroke Dock followed by interment at Llanion Cemetery. It was officiated by Reverend Canon Andrew J Davies.

The bearers were Nathan John (son); Bradley Perry (brother-in-law); David Backhouse (stepson); Richard Bennett (son-in-law); Keith Dugdale (nephew) and Michael Dugdale (nephew).

There were family flowers only, with donations in lieu of flowers for Help for Heroes c/o E C Thomas and Son Funeral Directors, Zoar Chapel Funeral Home, Llanteg SA67 8QH, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

 

Mrs I Jenkins

Burton

MRS Iona Jenkins of Burton and formerly of The Close, Johnston passed at Rangiora, Burton, the home of her son and daughter-in-law at the age of 87 on October 2.

Originally from Pontyberem she was a junior school teacher in Efailwen until her marriage in 1947 to the late Ron Jenkins. She then became a housewife.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed the crossword in the Western Mail on a daily basis. Also being an active member of the Mothers Union for 41 years, a member of the Sunshine Club in Johnston, a faithful member of St Peter’s Church, Johnston, being a former Sunday School teacher, and previously at St Peter’s Church, Goodwick.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Mike and Mary (son and daughterin- law); Eva Morris (sister); Richard and Sarah (grandson and wife); Adrian and Rachel (grandson and partner); Brad (step grandson) plus nieces and nephews, brothers-inlaw and sisters-in-law and other relatives too numerous to mention.

The service was held at St Peter’s Church, Johnston followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn Crematorium and was officiated by Rev Jane Goupillon.

The bearers were Keith Davies, Barrie Davies, Clive Davies, Wayne Davies, Steve Bessant and Billy Scriven.
