Pembroke Dock

THE death occurred peacefully at home of Mr John Anthony Maguire, of Prospect Place, Pembroke Dock, on September 1. He was 76.

He was a native of Liverpool, and was called up to join the army in 1955. He served in the Royal Artillery 22nd Regiment. He initially served in Germany and then returned to the United Kingdom in 1957, being stationed at Llanion, Pembroke Dock.

After leaving the army, John began working at Pembroke power station, where he remained until it started to close down. After leaving the power station he had a couple of delivery driving jobs, which took him into his retirement.

John’s main interests were fishing, football, especially Liverpool Football Club, gardening and spending time with his family.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Frederica (widow); Sharon and Stephen (daughter and son-in-law); Michael (grandson); Samantha and John (granddaughter and husband); Adam, Liam, Callum and Isabella (great-grandchildren); Mona (mother, unable to attend), plus family and friends too numerous to mention.

The service was held at St John’s Church, Pembroke Dock, followed by interment at Llanion cemetery. It was officiated by Rev Nicky Skipworth and the bearers were Michael George (grandson); John Cressey (granddaughter’s husband); Ralph Kenniford (brother-in-law); Jason Kenniford (nephew); Greg Hubbard (nephew).

There were family flowers only with donations for the ‘Thorne Mason Trust’ and Headcase Cancer Trust’ c/o E C Thomas and Son Funeral Directors, Zoar Chapel Funeral Home, Llanteg SA67 8QH, who carried out the funeral arrangements.

Mrs E L Evans

Haverfordwest

MRS Elizabeth Laura (Betty) Evans, of Dew Street, Haverfordwest, passed away peacefully at Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, on August 7.

She had been a resident of Pencoed Care Home, Saundersfoot, for the past 12 months.

Betty was born in 1926 in Fishguard. She was the eldest of four children. Her brother, Peter Veale, predeceased her and she had two sisters. She had a happy childhood and spent a lot of her time growing up with her grandparents in Pembroke Dock at the time the Second World War broke out.

With a lot of bombing in Pembroke Dock, Betty moved back with her parents. She cycled daily to Taskers Girls’ School in Tower Hill in Haverfordwest. She excelled in school and went on to work in the local taxation office in Haverfordwest. From there she decided to go to London to St Thomas’ Hospital to pursue a career in nursing, but after about 12 months she was found to have TB and had to return to Pembrokeshire and was admitted to Sealyham Hospital for treatment. It was at this time she met her future husband, Billy, who was also receiving treatment. They married in 1956 and had two children, Nicholas and Timothy. They had 36 happy years together and loved to travel with family and friends.

Billy passed away in 1992, and over the following years Betty had many happy years with her family around her, and especially her grandchildren.

In the later years Betty’s eyesight deteriorated rapidly and she took great comfort from her talking books from the RNIB. Betty suffered with rheumatoid arthritis right up until her death, but she would never be heard to complain about the pain.

The principal mourners were Nicholas and Rosalind Evans, Timothy and Grace Evans (sons and daughtersin- law); Kate (granddaughter); Matthew and Anna (grandson and partner); Oliver (grandson); Hillary Johnson and Sadie Findlay (sisters). Unable to attend Norman Findlay (brother-inlaw, Pembroke); Ruth Veale (sister-in-law, Isle of Man).

The affection in which Betty was held was evident in the number of people who attended her funeral at Parc Gwyn Crematorium in Narberth, which was officiated by Rev Fr Harri Williams.

The bearers were Graham John, Richard James, Matthew Evans and Oliver Evans.

There were family flowers only with donations in lieu for the RNIB c/o Mr G John, 26 Upper Lamphey Road, Pembroke SA71 5JL.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Robin Folland and Son, Haverfordwest.

Mr W J Richards

Haverfordwest

MR William James Richards, of Dale Road, Haverfordwest, passed away peacefully at Withybush Hospital at the age of 87 on September 13.

He was born at Little Hasguard Farm on February 17, 1926, and spent all his working life there until his retirement, when he and his wife, Noreen, moved to Little Hasguard Cottage in 1993.

He maintained his interest in the family’s dairy farm and became a keen gardener and enjoyed family life.

Along with his wife he attended North Road Baptist Church until ill- health prevented him.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Noreen Richards (widow); Peter and Paul Richards (sons); Katharine and Martin Jones (daughter and sonin- law); Simon and Alison Richards (son and daughterin- law); Rebecca, Rachel, Hannah, Adam, Lorna, Alice, John, Jennifer and Jemima (grandchildren), plus many nephews and nieces too numerous to mention.

The service was held at North Road Baptist Church, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, and was officiated by Mrs Margaret Price. The bearers were Christopher Tasker and David Charles (nephews); Andrew George and Lloyd Davies (friends).

Donations in lieu of flowers for the North Road Baptist Church may be sent to Mrs A Miles, 53 Mount Pleasant Way, Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons Ltd, Milford Haven.

Pembroke Dock

THE death occurred on October 1 of Mr Andrew George John James, of Amphion Court, Pembroke Dock, at Withybush Hospital. He was 46.

Originally from Pembroke Dock, he was a painter and decorator. His main interests were fishing, darts, music, films, books and being a devoted father.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Pat and Steve (mum and dad); Darren and Irene (brother and sister-in-law); Lorraine and Gareth (sister and brother- in-law); Brandon, Callum and Conner (sons); Wayne, Charlene, Sophie and Daniel (nieces and nephews); Jasmine, Cameron, Tiao and Daley.

The service took place at St John’s Church, Pembroke Dock, and was officiated by Nicky Skipworth. The bearers were Wayne Skyrme, Craig Bendall, Nigel Owens, Keith Owens, Ian Jones and Simon Shaw.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by E C Thomas and son, Pembroke Dock.

Mrs D A White Milford Haven (formerly of Pembroke) MRS Dorothy Ann White (Dot) of Milford Haven and formerly of Pembroke passed away peacefully on October 7 at the age of 87 years.

Dot, of Rickeston Mill Nursing Home, Milford Haven, and formerly of Jogram Avenue, Pembroke, was much loved and she will be sadly missed by all her family and many friends.

The funeral took place on Tuesday, October 15. A service was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth.

There were family flowers only, with donations made payable to The Rickeston Mill Activity Fund, which can be sent c/o Rickeston Mill, Rickeston Bridge, Milford Haven, SA73 3TJ.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and Son, Haverfordwest.

Mrs E M Evans

Johnston

THE funeral took place on August 21 at Parc Gwyn Crematorium of Eileen Margaret Evans, of Bulford Close, Johnston. She was 86. She was born at Llanungar Fach farm in Solva.

Eileen married Raymond Evans and they lived at Haroldston House in Solva.

She attended St Aiden’s Church and was secretary and treasurer for many years. Eileen attended the Mothers’ Union, the WI and she helped with the pensioners’ lunch club.

In 1989 Eileen and Raymond moved to Johnston to live near their daughter, Margaret, son-in-law Eric and grandsons Neil and Ian.

In September of that year Raymond sadly passed away.

Eileen became involved in activities in Johnston. She went to St Peter’s Church, the Mother’s Union and the WI, she was a member of the Johnston Sunshine Club and Eileen was a volunteer of the WRVS for 25 years, working for many years at the tea bar at Withybush Hospital. This was a great joy to her and she managed to continue helping there until she was 85 and ill health stopped her.Eileen was very active and enjoyed many holidays with family and friends over the years.

She was delighted to become a great grandmother to Abigail four years ago. Eileen was really looking forward to seeing her grandson Ian marry Alison on August 17 but sadly she passed away on August 12.

The principal mourners were Margaret and Eric Cheetham (daughter and son-in-law); Neil and Claire Cheetham, Ian and Alison Cheetham (grandsons and granddaughters-in-law); Joan and Bernard Lewis (sister and brother-in-law); Ann, David, Hannah and Joe Walsh, Kelvin Evans, Christine and John Dyer (nephews and nieces).

A large number of family and friends attended the service which was officiated by the Reverend Jane Goupillon.

She was assisted by Mr Steve Bessant and Mrs Val Petherick.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by F G Rees and Sons, Portfield Gate.
