Mrs M A Davies

Cwmfelin Boeth, Whitland

THE Cwmfelin Boeth district lost a respected senior member of its community with the passing of Mrs Nancy Davies, Tynewydd, on October 23 at Glangwili Hospital.

Daughter of the late Llewellyn and Esther Phillips, she spent her younger days helping her parents in Brynteg, the family farm at Lampeter Velfrey. After her marriage in 1948 to William Davies (Willie), she joined him at his home in Tynewydd, Cwmfelin Boeth, Whitland, where she enjoyed a happy and active life in the close community of that village and its surrounding areas for the rest of her long life.

She was a loyal member of the Women’s Institute and served as chairman of the Llangan branch for many years. She was also a very faithful member of Bryn Seion Chapel, Lampeter Velfrey, all her life and gave excellent service as organist until prevented by ill-health from attending. She also remained a conscientious trustee until her death. She was blessed with a good memory and her flair for writing helped her write an inspiring foreword to Mr Roger Penn’s book, Dolycwrt, when in her nineties.

The funeral at Henllan Amgoed Congregational Chapel and the interment with her late husband at Bryn Seion Chapel were conducted by the Rev Llinos Edwards, assisted by the Rev Elwyn John and the Rev Laurence Mitchell. The organist was Mrs. Margaret Richards.

The Rev Mitchell, a close friend of both Willie and Nancy for many years, expressed his appreciation of the warm welcome which he and his wife always received whenever they visited Tynewydd. He paid tribute to Nancy’s strong faith and praised her for the great care and devotion she gave her mother-in-law and both parents during their declining years. Though in considerable pain for many years, she often expressed her thanks for the help received from the Meddygfa Taf doctors, the district nurses and the carers.

Mrs A M Cole

Martletwy

THE death of Mrs Auriel Marlene Cole, known as Marlene, of Picton View, Martletwy, occurred on Sunday, September 1, at Withybush Hospital.

Marlene grew up in Lawrenny, working on the family farm (Copybush) until her marriage to John in 1971, when she moved to Martletwy.

It was here that she raised her children, Janice and David.

During her younger years Marlene was an active member of Martletwy YFC, enjoying many of the club’s activities.

She then went on to join Martletwy Show Committee, where she was still a member, actively contributing to the smooth running and success of the show.

Marlene’s interests included baking and playing the piano.

She also liked to get out and about, being an active member of Lawrenny and Martletwy WI, where she had been treasurer for the past 40 years, only giving up earlier this year. Marlene supported many local charities through attendance at coffee evenings and social events.

Lawrenny church was very close to Marlene’s heart, attending regularly since her childhood. She was an active member of the church committee, having been treasurer for several years prior to her resignation due to ill-health, earlier this year.

Marlene suffered with intermittent ill-health for many years but showed such strength of character and bravery in not letting this stop her going out and mixing with others. However, worsening health over the past months made it impossible for her to achieve this, which she found extremely difficult to accept.

There was such a large attendance at her funeral in St Caradoc’s Church, Lawrenny, which reflected the high regard in which she was held within the community. Father Paul Davies officiated.

The bearers were Denny Richards, Huw Richards, Ivor Hughes, Roy Eynon, Dave Jenkins and Les Jones.

Principal mourners were John (husband); Janice and Richard (daughter and sonin- law); David and Joanne (son and daughter-in-law); Daniel (grandson); Mrs Winnie Evans (auntie); Meryl and David, William (cousins); Sylvia and Albert, Olga and Glyn, Pauline (sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law); Andrew and Tracy, Nicola and Julian, Wendy, Pearl, Helen, Jennifer and Andrew, Phillip, Richard, Sarah, Simon and Hayley (nieces, nephews and partners).

Donations in lieu of flowers for St Caradoc’s Church, Lawrenny, or the Wales Air Ambulance may be sent c/o David E Morris, of Hywel Evans Funeral Directors, 3 Wesley Villas, Station Road, Narberth, who carried out the funeral arrangements.

Mr W G Harries

Hakin

THE death occurred suddenly on September 6 at Withybush Hospital of Mr William George Harries, or as he was more fondly known, ‘Top House’.

George was born and brought up in Broad Haven before attending Haverfordwest Grammar School. He was always a keen sportsman who especially enjoyed football, cricket and rugby.

After leaving school, George joined the Post Office telecommunications department, where he learnt his trade before enlisting with the Royal Signals Regiment to complete his national service.

This took George to the Middle East, where he played football for the Middle East Land Forces among many others.

On leaving the army, George returned to the Post Office (later to become BT) and continued his career as a telecommunications engineer.

He then went on to a supervisory role in his later years before retiring early after over 40 years of service. This was mainly to spend more time with his wife, Dorothy, who sadly passed away in 2004.

He also got great enjoyment from his grandchildren and loved to attend their sporting activities, encouraging them where possible and taking the mickey out of them whenever he could.

Sport was always at the forefront of George’s life and he played in goal for Milford United for many years. He was also a sociable person and enjoyed meeting his many friends in the pubs and clubs of Milford Haven for a few beers and a game of cards or dominoes.

George will be remembered by everyone who knew him as a true character with great sense of humour, who always had time for everyone.

This respect was clearly demonstrated by the large numbers of people who attended his funeral and spoke so very fondly of him at this sad time.

The family left to mourn are Ruth and Robert Thomson (daughter and son-inlaw), Alix and Rhys Thomson (granddaughter and grandson), Roy Page (brother-inlaw), Sheila Harries (sisterin- law), Paul and Andrew Lewis (nephews) and their respective families, plus the many cousins and their respective families.
