Born in Longfield, Kent, the only child of Gladys and Bert Rich, on leaving school at 15 Ralph started work in the local butchers, and it was as a butcher he worked all his life, moving to Pembrokeshire in 1968, having met Eva through mutual friends in 1964, and they married in 1969. Ralph spent the last 24 years of his working life at Heywoods Butchers in Saundersfoot, where his knife-sharpening skills were renowned.

Ralph enjoyed his garden, looking after the grounds of Saundersfoot Methodist Chapel, where he was a member, walking in the Pembrokeshire countryside, and supporting and helping Eva with her six guide dogs and working tirelessly to raise funds for the Guide Dogs for the Blind. He enjoyed collecting at the various stores and the weekly stalls on Saundersfoot harbour in the summer months, chatting to customers. Ralph was Eva’s rock, and she is going to miss that left hand that was always there ready to help and guide.

If so desired donations in Ralph’s memory in aid of Guide Dogs for the Blind can be sent to E C Thomas and Sons, Funeral Directors, Zoar Chapel Funeral Home, Llanteg, Narberth, SA67 8LT, who carried out the funeral arrangements with dignity.

Mr J P O Bushell

THE death occurred on October 25 at Withybush Hospital of James Parsons Owen Bushell, aged 85.

Owen was born on October 5, 1928, at Park East, New Moat.

He attended Penffordd Primary School and later Haverfordwest Grammar. After leaving school Owen worked at Park East with his father and brother.

He then was called up to the RAF as a radio operator, being stationed at Bushy, Watton Norfolk, Yatesbury and West Kirby, Cheshire.

The death of Owen’s father in 1950 led Owen back to Park East, where he and John farmed dairy herd and arable for the rest of his working life.

Owen had many interests and was a member of many societies and clubs, these included amateur radio, family history, Freemasonary, Narberth Probus Club, Haverfordwest Civic Society, Pembrokeshire Historic Buildings Trust, Clarbeston Road, Historical Society, Maenclochog branch of the British Legion, and he was standing president of Llawhaden and District Ploughing Society.

His knowledge of Pembrokeshire families was extensive and he liked nothing better than ‘digging up his ancestors’ or of course helping others to do the same.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Jonathan, Richard and Peter (nephews); Karen and Thomas (nephew’s wife and great-nephew); Margaret (sister-in-law); Hywel Evans, John and Margaret Evans, Derrick Charles, David Bushell, Joan Bushell (cousins and cousins’ husbands and wives) with other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.

Mrs S Pritchard

Haverfordwest

BORN in Sheffield, Yorkshire, on December 12, 1929, an apparently normal childhood was shattered by the Second World War and the bombing of the family home, where her two brothers, Peter and Joe, also lived with their mother, while her father was away fighting in the deserts of the Middle East.

Her youngest sister, Anne, was born a little later.

The Sheffield blitz and the similar events in Swansea, where Dewi, her late husband lived, led to the two evacuees meeting at Cilwendeg in North Pembrokeshire, later marrying at St Aiden’s Church, Sheffield, when Sheila was 20 years old.

Many local people remember the couple living in Maenclochog while Dewi developed a career in teaching, after a period in India and the Far East as an army officer.

Sheila’s eldest son, David, was born in 1952, with much time being devoted to his upbringing, Her love of the communities of Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion led to many long-standing relationships, which remain today.

Their youngest son, Lyndon, was born while Dewi was headmaster in Trecwn School, with Sheila later working at Withybush Hospital, followed by a move to her current home in Haverfordwest in 1979.

Many friends were made through RAF Brawdy and Castlemartin military bases,.

Unfortunately Dewi passed away 15 years ago, but Sheila was driven on by the love of her grandchildren, Naomi, Joe and Sam.

Sadly her independence was taken away with the onset of acute arthritis two years ago.

Once more the local people of Pembrokeshire were kind to her following recuperation from a broken hip this year, and during her assessment at Havenhurst care home in Milford Haven, with the final week of her life being in the Ridgeway Nursing Home, Llawhaden, where she passed away peacefully in her sleep.

The service was held at St Mary’s Church by Rev Paul Mackness, Haverfordwest, with interment at City Road cemetery, organised by Roy Folland and Sons, Haverfordwest.

Donations in lieu of flowers have been sent to Kidney Research.
