Mrs E M Davies

A LARGE gathering joined the family to commemorate the life of Neyland’s oldest resident Mrs Elizabeth Margaret Davies (Betty) of Charles Street. She was 102.

The eldest daughter of five children of Joseph and Augusta Williams of Croesgoch, she was a proud Welsh speaker. She married her husband the late Tom in 1940 and moved into Charles Street where she resided for over seventy years. She was blessed with two sons, Bill and Tom, but sadly Tom died in a motor accident in 1965.

Betty was a person who got things done. She served the community of Neyland from the day she married, Betty loved Neyland. She joined the WRVS in 1941and was still helping to serve tea in the day centre well into her nineties, receiving several long service medals over the years.

She was on a number of committees from the Railway Families Association, the Darby and Joan and made food for generations of rugby and cricket teams. In the 1950s and 1960s when people organised their own wedding functions if Betty wasn’t in charge she was certainly second in command.

A committed Christian she was a deaconess and treasurer of Neyland Baptist Chapel.

Anne died at South Pembrokeshire Hospital, following an extended battle with cancer, aged just 65 years. She leaves three brothers, Alan, John and her twin, Robert.

Anne was borne to Tudor and Anne Thomas, living her formative years in Kensington Road, Neyland, where her twin brother Robert still lives in the family home. She was married twice and moved to Manorbier, where she lived and worked for approximately 20 years, making many friends there.

She was educated at Neyland CP and Haverfordwest Secondary school, followed by employment in the Neyland Co- op shop. She stayed in the retail business for several years, but was happiest working with plants at the Manorbier Garden Centre, where she acquired a deep interest and extensive knowledge of gardens and plantlife, even extending to Latin names for many plants.

The work and life in Manorbier was possibly the happiest part of Anne’s adult life, during which, she made many lifelong friends, who supported her in life and especially in sickness, to the end.

Anne had a lively, creative mind and when sickness forced retirement from the strenuous work of gardening, she learned to use a computer and adopted numerous hobbies, including crafting, where she made even more new friends.

Throughout her life, Anne loved animals and could not pass cat or dog without trying to greet and befriend them.

As a result, she adopted several pets along the way, all of which were hopelessly spoilt and well cared for.

In recent years, Anne volunteered her time to the Paul Sartori charity organisation, where she utilised her retail skills in the local Neyland store in Kensington Road.

She also took on the task of organising and collecting the“Sootie” boxes for charity donations. She was a generous and very caring person, who will be sadly missed by both family and friends.

Lately, she was awarded the Pembrokeshire “Full of Life award” for an inspirational person.

A great number of friends and family attended the funeral and cremation services.

Numbers are too large to list all the names here, though special mention is made for Anne’s nieces and nephew Anne, Kate and Philip. Special mention is made for Anne’s close friend Yvonne, who has been incredibly supportive throughout both sickness and now following Anne’s death. A true friend.

She was cared for by the nurses and staff on the Sunderland Ward at South Pembrokeshire Hospital where she passed away , following an extended battle with cancer, aged just 65 years. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons, Neyland.
