Mrs E M Smith

Johnston

Mrs Elizabeth Mary Smith, formally of Hillcroft, Johnston passed away at Fairfield Nursing Home on May 3 at the age of 94 years.

Betty, as she liked to be called, lived all of her 94 years in her beloved Pembrokeshire.

She loved the countryside, the beaches and the churches, especially St. David’s Cathedral.

She was a very strong and devoted Christian. Her faith saw her through difficult times.

She supported the churches in Freystrop and St. Peter’s, Johnston when she was able.

Christian values were the guide for how she lived her life.

She always saw the best in people.

In recent years when she was unable to go to church, she was an avid watcher of ‘Songs of Praise’, and often she joined in the singing of the hymns on the broadcast, very loudly.

She lived in Merlin’s Bridge for 30 years, working in the family business and looking after her Aunt Lena and later, her grandmother, who lived for 93 years. Working for the family bakery, she met many people when she delivered bread throughout mid-Pembrokeshire.

Doing this gave her an encyclopaedic knowledge of the farmers and families in mid and south Pembrokeshire.

During the last 15 years, when she was receiving care herself, she would often surprise the carer with knowledge about their parents or other family members. She had often delivered bread to a relative of the carer 40 to 50 years previously.

She had a great memory.

While working on the bread round, she had an accident.

She was knocked down by a drunk driver. The significance of this was that Hugh, her future husband, visited her in hospital. The rest is history. A few years after their wedding, Betty and Hugh farmed in Freystrop, until Hugh’s death in 1979. She loved the farming life, despite the hardships.

When she moved to Johnston in 1980, she joined the Mother’s Union and the Sunshine Club. Going to the Sunshine Club was the highlight of her week. Johnston was a happy home for her and she loved her life, friends and family.

The chief mourners were her sons Robert and Richard Smith, Kitty Smith (daughterin law and Richard’s wife); granddaughters Shona, Tara and Orla.

Especially in recent years, Betty much appreciated the friendship and support of her relatives, her sister-in-law Mary Harris, Mary’s daughter Ann, Margaret James, her niece, also Jane Lewis and Pam James, daughters of Betty’s cousins.

Betty always thought that she was lucky to have so many wonderful friends in Johnston.

Celia Walters and Joyce Davies were always there to help. Other neighbours Janice Williams, Jean Cook, Sonny Clancy and Elvit Jenkins were also regular visitors to her bungalow in Hillcroft.

She will always be remembered as a kind, caring and selfless lady who will be missed by every person’s life she touched. The family have been overwhelmed by the kindness and love that has been shown to them over the last week. Betty was cared for sensitively by the carers at Fairfield Nursing Home during her final months.

The service was held at St Peter’s Church in Johnston, followed by internment at Steynton Church Cemetery. It was officiated by the Rev Victoria K Jones.

There were family flowers only with donations for The Paul Sartori Foundation c/o The Treasurer, 31 Haven Road, Haverfordwest. Roy Folland and Son, Haverfordwest carried out the funeral arrangements
