Mrs B Barry

Llawhaden

AS reported previously, the death occurred peacefully at home on May 30, of Mrs Barbara Barry, of Llawhaden.

Aged 66, she was the devoted wife of Gordon, dearly loved mum of Sally and mother-inlaw to Lee, adored granny to Matilda and Ellis, much-loved sister of Megan and the late Malcolm, sister-in-law to John and a loving aunt.

Barbara was born, on June 11 1947, at Kilgetty Farm, Stepaside.

She spent her childhood years in Camphill, Narberth.

She left Whitland Grammar School at the age of 15 to work in the office of Whitland Diaries.

She and Gordon married in 1969 and resided at Laurel Bank, Templeton. They were blessed by the birth of their daughter Sally Ann in 1970.

They then moved to Cowbridge in 1983 with Gordon’s work. Barbara worked for Ursula Clark in the very successful Ushi’s gift shops.

On Gordon’s retirement in 2001 they returned to Pembrokeshire to be shortly followed by her daughter and family.

Barbara’s passion being clothes, it came as no surprise that she would become an integral part of her daughters fashion boutique in Narberth.

She enjoyed many buying trips to London and even New York.

Her other passions were her grandchildren and her garden, trying to cram in as many colourful flowers as possible into every space.

Sadly this was curtailed a year ago when MND was diagnosed.

Typically her bravery and fortitude shone through at all times.

The funeral took place on June 16 at Parc Gwyn Crematorium and was a celebration of Barbara’s life with colourful attire being worn by her family and her very many friends.

The service was officiated by The Rev Elwyn John and the bearers were Lee White, Jonathan Williams, Jordan Williams and Robert Traylor.

The family mourners were Sally, Lee, Matilda and Ellis White (daughter, son in law and grandchildren); Megan, John, Debbie and Jonathan (sister, brother in law and their children); also beloved great aunt (and almost another Granny) to Jordon, Sophie, Chloe, Jay and Ruby, Tazmin and Toby and Jordon’s son Theo; also Tiggy and Megan.

Mrs G Lloyd

Haverfordwest

MRS GRACE Lloyd, formerly of Cromie Avenue, Haverfordwest, died peacefully at Highgrove, Nursing Home, Haverfordwest on May 29.

Grace, as she was always known to a host of friends and acquaintances, was 84 and had spent the greater part of her life caring for other people.

She was born in Pontyberen, one of seven children, and helped in the care of her brothers and sisters as well as carrying out domestic work as a young girl.

After her family moved to Mynachlogddu she met and married Emrys and the couple and their six children later set up home in Haverfordwest where Emrys died 27 years ago and Grace remained for the rest of her life.

During this time, for 35 years, she worked in all of the town’s hospitals, firstly Priory and St Thomas’s, then the County Hospital and latterly at Withybush.

It was during this period that she made a host of friends who never forgot the care they received from this lady who was ever ready to go beyond the call of duty to bring ease where it was needed. Her fluency in the Welsh language gave comfort to many elderly patients unused to conversing in English.

Her youngest son Mark, was born in 1964 and was shortly after diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis, then a little known disease - an early Cystic Fibrosis patient in the county.

Despite her gentle exterior Grace was made of steel and fought for the best possible care and treatment for her son.

When Mark was 14 she decided that she could use the experience she had gained over the years to help other parents of CF children. With Sybil Edwards she set up a support group which quickly added fundraising to its activities growing into today’s vibrant Pembrokeshire Cystic Fibrosis Branch.

When she was no longer well enough to play an active role in the work of the branch she was made Vice President and has become part of Cystic Fibrosis history.

While she cared for others Grace’s own life was not always easy and the tragedy of her grandson Josh’s tragic death in 2004, just before Mark’s 40th birthday, followed within a few months by Mark’s own decease was a shattering blow from which she never fully recovered.

A very loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother she leaves to mourn sons Peter, David , Michael and Nigel, daughter Gillian Eagles, 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; only one sister, Mrs Margaret Hughes, survives her and she was predeceased by her sisters Mrs Peggy Mathias, Mrs Amy Edmunds, Mrs Joan Mathias, and Mrs Kathleen Phillips, and brothers Arthur and David Thomas.

A large congregation including members of the Pembrokeshire Cystic Fibrosis branch attended the funeral at Tabernacle Congregational Church, Haverfordwest, officiated by the Rev’d Chris Gillham.

A poem was read by David Lloyd and Sybil Edwards, chairman of the Pembrokeshire Cystic Fibrosis branch paid tribute to Grace for her role in establishing the branch and as a wonderful friend of 36 years.

The bearers in the chapel were sons Peter, David, Michael and Nigel.

The mourners were Peter and Mair Lloyd, David and Lorrain Lloyd, and Jean Lloyd (sons and daughters-inlaw); Gillian and John Eagles (daughter and son-in-law); grandchildren Andrew, Karen, Paul, Dean and Lorna Lloyd; Rachael and William Eagles; Benjamin, Rebecca and Daniel Lloyd and Debbie and Cassie, Hannah and Jessica; great grandchildren Christopher Jopston, Jake, Luke, Sonny and Seren Lloyd; Bethan, Seren, Ava, Martha, Violet, Charlie and Chester; Margaret and Clifford Hughes, sister and brother in law and Mrs May Thomas, sister in law; also nephews, nieces and close friends Mrs Phyllis Whelton and Mrs Sybil Edwards.

Internment followed at City Road Cemetery where the bearers were John Eagles and grandsons Andrew, Paul, Dean and Ben.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and Son, of Haverfordwest If desired donations for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust may be sent to Mrs Sybil Edwards, Portland House, 27 Ffordd y Felin, Trefin, Haverfordwest SA62 5AX.
