Wendy Gould

Haverfordwest

Wendy Elizabeth Gould (Nee Jones) Formerly of Haverfordwest WENDY - dearly beloved wife of Alan, caring and loving mother to Alison, Jonathan and Sarah, ever loving grandmother of Anna, Elie and Joseph - died in hospital on June 16 after a long and debilitating illness that she endured with great courage.

Wendy and Alan were married at Prendergast Church in Haverfordwest on 26 July 1958. Wendy started her teaching career in Pembrokeshire but moved to Cardiff with Alan in 1961. During their 56 years together they moved home between Cardiff and Swansea finally coming to live in Llysworney near Cowbridge in 1978.

During all this time Wendy and Alan kept up their connection with Pembrokshire through family and friends.

Wendy devoted her life to her family and this was very evident in the way that she cared for her mother and her mother-in-law during their declining years. This devotion was also seen in Wendy’s teaching career especially during the time that she taught disadvantaged children in schools both in Swansea and in Cardiff – again as a teacher giving compassionate support to those less fortunate children.

Wendy’s life of caring for others can be very well expressed in this quotation from the Yale Book of American Verse – “None knew thee but to love thee nor named thee but to praise.”

Mrs M Stokes

Lamphey

A SERVICE of thanksgiving and celebration of the life of Marjorie Stokes, Lamphey, was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium on June 12 after she passed away on May 30, aged 93.

She was the only child of Arthur and Elizabeth Burns of Bearwood, West Midlands, and was educated at Malvern Hall, Solihull, where her daughter Sheila also later attended. On leaving school she was employed as a bank clerk and during the war drove an ambulance around Birmingham, a busy time during the bombing raids.

Marjorie also attended the local Tennis Club where she met her husband Laurie and they married in 1945, making their home in Shirley near Solihull.

Family holidays were taken in Pembrokeshire and they built up various properties, forming the company Holiday Homes which were used as self-catering accommodation for visitors to the county.

When Marjorie was diagnosed with cancer in the mid- 60s she had extensive surgery and treatment and Laurie decided that they should move permanently from the Midlands for her to end her days in pleasant surroundings.

However Marjorie survived for a further 50 years, instead she found her love of gardening and developed the beautiful array of flowers so many people remarked on. This prompted her to open her flower shop Sleepy Hollow in the town of Pembroke which she ran with her daughter until she retired.

Both Laurie and Marjorie enjoyed village life in Lamphey and played a large part with the Cricket Club taking pleasure in watching the matches and the social life involved. They also spent many happy hours on their motor cruiser Keltie as well as holidays in their caravan.

When Laurie became too ill to drive, Marjorie thought nothing of getting behind the wheel to tow the caravan, and after he died she determinedly carried on by herself until she reached her mid-80s when she gave in gracefully.

At the age of 90 she gave up driving altogether, recognising her limitations.

When the new cancer diagnosis was apparent her sincere wish was that she did not want to die in hospital but in her own home which fortunately was possible thanks to so many services including Paul Sartori, Macmillan, District Nurses. The Acute Response Team and Care in Hand.

The principal mourners were Sheila and Dave Ralph (daughter and son-in-law); Peter and Jeanette Stokes (son and daughter-in-law); Stephen Stokes (son); Sian Evans (granddaughter); Neil and Jaimie Evans, Matthew and Charlotte Stokes (grandsons and wives); Andrew Stokes (grandson); Rhys Dow, Kieran Evans and Hannah Evans (great grandchildren).

Unable to attend were Jane Stokes (Andrew’s wife) Codie, Molly, Aimee, Freddie and Amber (youngest great grandchildren).

The bearers were Neil, Matthew and Andrew, Rhys and Kieran (grandsons and great grandsons). Officiating at the service was the Rev Roger Jones. At her request there was a family cross made by her daughter using flowers and foliage from Marjorie’s garden. Donations in lieu of flowers for Paul Sartori, Macmillan and PDSA may be sent to Neil Roberts of John Roberts and Son 51 Bush Street Pembroke Dock, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.
