Saundersfoot

SIMON passed away peacefully at his home, Jubilee Guest House, Stammers Road, Saundersfoot, on the morning of June 13. He was aged 34. Simon’s parents were with his at the time of his passing.

Simon was the beloved son of Paul and Diane Cotton and brother of James. Also left to mourn are sisters Paula Presdee Jones and Sarah Presdee Hughes and Simon’s many nieces and nephews.

Although born in Cardiff, Simon had spent most of his life in Saundersfoot where his parents run a guesthouse.

Simon was a popular personality in and around Saundersfoot and Tenby where he attended the Avenue Centre and Tenby Gateway Club. He had many interests including music, film and science fiction and was interested in phenomena such as crop circles and aspects of the weather. He was also known as a keen bingo player.

Simon was knowledgeable around modern technology, including computers, mobile phones, tablets and Wifi and was always willing to help friends with related problem solving.

Simon had endured two major operations and further treatments, but his inner strength enabled him to make a remarkable recovery from the trauma of both operations.

Simon was caring and rather than discuss his illness he was more interested in the welfare of his friends. Rather than complain, he had a determination to live his life, as fully as possible and in his own way. He achieved this up to the time of his passing with much valuable support from his friends.

Simon’s funeral took place on June 30 at St Issell’s Church, Saundersfoot followed by interment at St Issell’s Cemetery. The service was officiated by Rev Marianne Osborne.

There was a reading and eulogy given by Paul (father) and a reading by Paula (sister) including a tribute from friend Gareth and a poem from Sarah (sister).

Bearers included family and friends Paul Cotton (father), James Cotton (brother), Connor Presdee Hughes (nephew), Michael Jones, Barry Collins and Colin Sharpe.

There were flowers with donations payable to either Paul Sartori Foundation or Macmillan Cancer Support c/o funeral directors W and M J Rossiter and Sons Ltd, The Old rectory, the Norton, Tenby who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

 

Mrs E M Morris

St Davids

MRS EIRA May Morris of Nun Street, St Davids passed away on June 3 at Withybush Hospital at the age of 79.

Eira was born and lived for most of her life in St Davids, the youngest of seven children of Benjamin and Lillian Jenkins. At the young age of four she lost her mother and was brought up be her eldest sister Elizabeth (Betty) alongside Betty’s children Muriel and the late John.

She attended the CP and Grammar schools in St Davids.

Eira was one of the first three employees in what was the Old Blacksmith’s shop at the bottom of Goat Street, St Davids of a company that later became a significant local employer St Davids Assemblies.

Eira later returned to the Assemblies after a period of ill health.

Eira married Alan in August 1957 and they were married for nearly 57 years. Eira had one son Andrew who has lived and worked in Ireland for the last 14 years.

Eira worked in the local primary schools in St Davids for 36 years as a meals and clerical supervisory assistant (known more affectionately to the children as the dinner lady) until she retired in 2000.

Since retiring Eira has enjoyed travelling in the UK and abroad visiting Israel, Egypt, Cyprus, Malta, Florida, Balearic and Canary Islands as well as many visits to Ireland to visit her son Andrew and daughter-in-law Jacqui.

A highlight of her travels was attending a garden party at Buckingham Palace in the year of her Golden Wedding Anniversary in 2007.

She was a Member of St Davids Day Centre, the Evergreens and luncheon clubs.

She also enjoyed attending the Welsh Service at St Davids Cathedral.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Alan (husband); Andrew and Jacqui (son and daughter-inlaw); Bryn (brother and family); Muriel and Glyn (niece and husband); Gillian and Graham (niece and husband); Alan and Gwen (nephew and wife); Chris and Sue (nephew and wife); Margaret and Terry (niece and husband); David and Gina (nephew and wife); Bill, Jayne and Gordon (brother-in-law and niece); Beryl and Ken (cousins); Colin and Hilary (cousin and wife).

The service was held at St David’s Cathedral followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn and was officiated by Rev Canon Dorian Davies and Rev Peter Mason. The bearers were Geraint and Mair Davies, Anthony Longstaff, John Bateman.

There were family flowers only with donations to the Intensive Care Unit, Withybush Hospital.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by W G Mathias, of St Davids.

 

Mrs E Sharples

Formerly of Hakin

MRS EILEEN Sharples formerly of Hayston Avenue, Hakin passed away peacefully at Torestin Nursing Home with her family surrounding her on July 4. She was 89.

She was born in Brecon and was the third of four children.

Her father was a train driver and after his sudden death the family decided to return to Milford Haven. The family grew up in Brooke Avenue and she attended Milford Boards School before attending Milford Grammar School. She was a keen hockey player and represented the county.

When she left school she worked at Woolworths and met her husband. They had 60 happy years of marriage together. She went on start a business in Waterloo Square, Milford Haven where she was the proprietess of Sharples outfitters. She retired from business in 1988. Eileen and Jim spent 16 happy years together travelling all over the world to visit family.

She loved dancing, knitting, reading, travelling and was a member of Hubberston WI, but most of all being surrounded by her three granddaughters Alexandra, Rachel and Laura. She adored her five great grandsons James, Tomos, Samuel, Harry and Oliver.

She was also a long and dedicated member of St Mary’s, Hakin and the Mothers Union.

Eileen was predeceased by her husband Jim Sharples ten years ago.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Lynda and Gordon Smith (daughter and son-in-law); Alexandra and Jeff Rowley (granddaughter and husband); Laura Smith and Gareth Virgo (granddaughter and fiance); Rachel and Andrew Wilson (granddaughter and husband); James, Tomos and Oliver Rowley, Samuel and Harry Wilson (great grandsons); Steve Hookey and Angela Hookey, Derek and Anne Braddick (nieces and husbands); Dorothy Watkins (sister-in-law); Alan and Martin Watkins (nephews); Hugh James (cousin).

The funeral was held in St Mary’s Church, Hakin followed by interment at Milford Haven Cemetery at a private family burial. It was officiated by Rev Alan Chadwick and Rev Bill Lewis.

The bearers were Jeff Rowley, Gareth Virgo, Stephen Hookey and Alan Watkins.

There were family flowers only with donations in lieu to St Mary’s Church, Hakin c/o Mrs M Jones, 113 Waterloo Road, Hakin, Milford Haven.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons Ltd, Milford Haven.

 

Mr W J R Jenkins

Saundersfoot

MR ‘JACK’ William John Rees Jenkins of Valley Road, Saundersfoot passed away at Pencoed Care Home on June 26 at the age of 98.

Originally from Pembrokeshire he farmed at Cowsland Farm until his retirement.

He was a life-long member of Bethel Baptist Chapel, a member of Guild of Friendship, Saundersfoot and he was a keen gardener. He was predeceased by his wife Doris May Jenkins.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Shirley and Gwyn May (daughter and spouse); the late Lillian and Margaret; Joanna and Greg; Christophe and Charlotte.

The service was held at Bethel Baptist Chapel, Loveston and was officiated by Reverend Alwyn Evans and Reverend Hywel Brown. The bearers were David Jenkins, Richard Jenkins, Clive Jenkins and David Shanklin.

Donations in lieu of flowers for Bethel Baptist Chapel and Wales Air Ambulance c/o E C Thomas and son, Funeral Directors, Zoar Chapel Funeral Home, Llanteg, Narberth, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

 

Mr J A Goodwin

Pembroke

THE death occurred at Withybush Hospital of Mr J A Goodwin of Devon Drive, Buttermilk Lane, Pembroke on May 29. He was 76.

As a native of Sheffield, Alan’s first working experience was working down treeton pit. He then moved onto army life. He has had various jobs from then, working on haggers door, steel erector, slinger building and working on local refineries.

Alan’s interests were reading, fishing, shooting and watching rugby with his sons, he attended meetings with his brothers at the Mervyn Allen Lodge (The Buffs), pottering in the garden with his wife Pam, playing and singing to his grandchildren, going out for trips with his daughter and son-inlaw and grandchildren Amelia and Abe.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Pamela Goodwin (wife); John and Anke (son and partner); Paul and Sue (son and partner); Nigel and Jayne (son and partner); Nicola and Nathan (daughter and husband); William, Amelia, Kimberley, Ewan, Lilly and Abe (grandchildren); Christine and Joe (sister, husband and family); Karen, Ger and family, Van, Alan and family, Lesley, Mike and family (sister and brothers-in-law); Russell, Diane and family (cousin) plus good friends.

The funeral was held at St Mary’s Church, Pembroke followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn . It was officiated by Canon Roger Jones and the bearers were John, Paul and Nigel (sons); Nathan Edwards (son-in-law); Gerald Taylor (brother-in-law).
