Mr N J Gregory

Sageston

NORMAN Joseph Gregory passed away peacefully at the age of 75 at Withybush Hospital on July 26. His funeral took place at St Mary’s Church, Carew Cheriton on August 8 with interment in the churchyard.

Norman was born in Darlston, West Midlands in 1939. He left school at the age of 15 and went to work as a builder for a short time.

He later worked as a welder, until he did his National Service in the Gloucestershire Regiment, after which he resumed his welding career until 1975. He went on to work in engineering until he moved to Wales with his family in 1985. He then had various other forms of employment until finishing with Wales Foam when he retired.

Norman had a keen interest in sport and was a great lover of coarse fishing, a hobby which he enjoyed throughout his life. He also took great joy in watching his grandson Charlie play football around the County. Norman was very much a family man and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his loved ones. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and all who knew and loved him.

He leaves to mourn his wife Sheila; son Neil and daughter- in-law Kara; daughter Kate and son-in-law Mark; grandson Charlie and granddaughter Freya; son Paul and partner Kim; daughter Mandy and son-in-law Martin; grandsons John, Anthony and Ryan; granddaughter Lisa; Ken and Maureen (brother and sister-in-law); Pam and Brian (sister-in-law and brother-in-law); Linda (sister-in-law); Nigel (brother- in-law) and many nieces, nephews and friends, too numerous to mention.

The bearers were sons Neil and Paul, son-in-law Mark, nephew Matthew Spuffard and Anthony Ryan and Mike Spuffard.

There were family flowers only. If desired, donations in lieu in memory of Norman for the British Lung Foundation can be sent to John Roberts and Sons, Funeral Directors, 51 Bush Street, Pembroke Dock, SA72 6AN who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

Mr G Francis

Fishguard

THE funeral of Mr Gareth Francis took place at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth on Thursday August 21.

He was 77 years old.

Gareth was born in the school house in Llanycefn where his father was headteacher.

The family moved to Dinas and then to Goodwick.

Gareth attended Fishguard Grammar School and from there he went to the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, graduating with honours in Welsh before beginning work in the Faculty of Education at the University of Wales, Cardiff. Gareth stayed in Cardiff to begin his teaching career in Caer Castell High School, Llanrhumney where he taught for four years before starting his journey back west with a post in the Department of Education at the University of Wales, Swansea.

His next move brought Gareth back to Pembrokeshire to teach the first upper junior classes in the Welsh stream at Prendergast Primary, Haverfordwest. This led to Gareth taking up the headship of Maenclochog Primary School, home in his ancestral heartland at last.

He had a gift for education, seeking and bringing out the potential and talents of the children in his care.

Gareth and Sally met and fell in love in 1962. They married in August 1966 and had two children, Rhun and Heledd.

In November 1980, in the prime of his life, Gareth was struck down by a crippling stroke followed by a succession of further strokes which, despite a long and brave fight, robbed him of more and more of his abilities and personality in the most cruel of ways.

He loved the arts, particularly music, and he was a leading light in the folk revival of the 60s and 70s. His own group took part in many of the topical television shows of the time.

His teasing yet gentle humour and thoughtful convictions are missed by all whose lives he touched.

The family mourners were led by his wife Sally, son Rhun, daughter Heledd, son-in-law Matthew and his young grandchildren Euen and Mabli who brought sparkle to Gareth’s eyes in his final months. They were supported at the funeral by his sister Eluned and her family Ken, Aled, Siwan, Dewi, Twm and Steff, and cousins David, Teifryn, Gerwyn and Eleanor, Glenys and Jean and Alwyn.

It was inspiring and comforting to see such a large congregation with people from every phase of Gareth’s life from early childhood onwards coming to pay their respects. The service was led with warmth and sensitivity by Rev. Geoffrey Eynon, ably supported by Gareth’s childhood friend, Rev. Wyn Vittle.

The funeral arrangements were directed with care and consideration by Paul Jenkins and Sons, Funeral Directors, Feidr Castell, Fishguard SA65 9BB.

Donations may still be made through them to the Stroke Association in memory of Gareth.
