Mr M T Jenkins

Neyland (Formerly of Haverfordwest)

WIDELY known for his cheerful, helpful and generous nature Melbourne Thomas (Mel) Jenkins, who died aged 79, at Withybush Hospital on August 11 had earned the respect and friendship of literally hundreds of people of all walks of life.

Mel of Riga Avenue, Neyland, who had lived most of his life in Haverfordwest, was born in Bridgend in 1935, son of Edgar and Ray Jenkins, and came to Pembrokeshire as a child during the last war when his father, a Pembrokeshire War Agricultural Committee official, was transferred to the county.

Educated at Barn Street VC School and Haverfordwest Grammar School, Mel joined the Royal Artillery for his National Service and working for two years for George Davies the builders’ merchants at Prendergast Hill when he was demobilised.

In 1959 he joined the staff of S and F. Green’s and during more than 30 years with Greens in Quay Street and later in Portfield, his beaming smile and cheerful disposition endeared him to countless customers whom he served with great efficiency and helpfulness.

Mel was a larger than life character with a keen sense of humour and nothing was too much trouble for him in terms of helping others.

He and Jean Wheeler of Pelcomb were married in Camrose Church in 1959 and they had two children, Carole and Martin. They suffered a tragic blow when Carole contracted meningitis at the age of six and, following a period of severe disability, died aged 23 in 1984.

Brought up in Hill Park Baptist Chapel, he joined Cymru’r Groes, the Church of England youth club, associated with St Marys and St Thomas Churches, making many friends and attending summer camps where he was always the life and soul of the party. He and Jean later joined St Davids Church, Prendergast, where he became a sidesman, a member of the Church Council and the Building Committee and of the Men’s Fellowship.

On moving to Neyland they joined Llanstadwel Church.

Following the cruel loss of their daughter Carole, Mel became involved in the founding and development of Haverfordest MENCAP, to which he devoted considerable time and dedication.

He inspired several innovative fund-raising projects, including the sale of postcards depicting garden gnomes in a members’ garden, which produced a steady income for some years. He was also closely involved in the development of the highly successful Mencap Garden at Stackpole, which has proved a very worthwhile enterprise, helping generations of young people with mental health issues.

He was proud to have been involved with Pembrokeshire Mencap for 46 years, having been chairman and still holding the vice-chairmanship of the Garden Committee until his death.

After retiring, he drove for Country Cars and Meals on Wheels, and his sunny personality again proved helpful.

Possessing a fine tenor voice, he was a member of Haverfordwest Male Voice Choir for some 30 years and later joined Friends in Harmony Mixed Choir.

A keen photographer and traveller, Mel and Jean enjoyed many holiday tours in the UK and abroad in their camper van as well as foreign coach tours with friends.

For several years he ferried two elderly pals to and from weekly lunches at Simpson Cross.

He also enjoyed involvement with the Pembrokeshire car runs.

It was a sad circumstance that restoration work on St Davids Church prevented his funeral from being held there. But a large attendance at its sister church at Rudbaxton bore powerful testimony to the esteem, respect and affection in which Mel was widely held. Interment took place in the grave of their daughter Carole at Prendergast.

The funeral service was officiated by the Rector, Canon Geoffrey Gwyther, who paid a glowing tribute to Mel’s sterling Christian qualities.

The Rector was assisted by the Rev Alan Chadwick, Mrs Val Petherick and Mr John Hancock.

The bearers were Messrs Peter Phillips, Billy Griffiths, John Gay, Fred Hughes, David Green and Matthew Hawkins, and friends of ‘Open Group’ provided refreshments in the Church Hall.

The principal mourners were Mrs Jean Jenkins (wife), Mr Martin Jenkins and Ann (son and partner), Mr Gareth Jenkins and Viv, Cardiff, (brother and partner), Andrea, Alin, Alexander, Luke and Lauren (nieces and family), Vera and Norman (brother and sister-inlaw), Diane and Julie (sisterin- law and niece).

Unable to attend were Christopher and Nicolle (nephew and wife) in America, Hugh and Mindy (nephew and wife) in America, Janet (niece) in Abu Dhabi, Vanessa, Nick, Rhiana and James (niece and family) in London.

There were family flowers only but donations in lieu for Mencap or St Davids Church may be sent to Mr Peter Phillips, Quarry Edge, Port Lion, Llangwm.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and Son, of Haverfordwest.

Ms B Iorwerth

Dinas BETH

Iorwerth of Pengwern, Dinas passed away at Withybush Hospital on May 3 this year at the age of 51. She had faced her illness bravely and positively and had continued to care for her family, to socialise and to smile.

Beth was born at Rock House, Llandisilio on January 13 1963, during the heavy snow of that winter. She was Robert and Llinos Edwards’ second child amongst four daughters and one son.

In 1965 the family moved from the village to Tynewydd, a farm in the parish of Llan y Cefn.

Beth’s creativity was evident from a very early age.

She was always sewing dolls’ clothes, cooking or making some collage or other.

She had the patience and the imagination to turn her hand to all sorts of things, and this was highlighted when she later created her own home.

Walking into Pengwern was like stepping into an ‘Ideal Home’ exhibition, and every meal she prepared was a feast.

Beth attended Ysgol y Preseli and was very happy there. She contributed extensively to school life and did well academically.

She had a circle of good friends who were often up to some mischief or other.

There were several reunions with these friends, and Beth was always at the heart of them.

In 1981 Beth went to Bangor University to read Sociology.

She soon made friends there and was renowned for her vibrant personality and her sociable nature. This was one of the happiest times of her life, and she kept in close contact with her college friends until the very end.

Beth qualified as an occupational therapist and went to work in her chosen field of adult mental health, perhaps one of the most challenging areas of work within Health Care. She very quickly progressed her professional career to become Head Occupational Therapist and Team Leader of Bro Cerwyn – a role she was very proud of achieving. She applied the philosophy of occupational therapy in all aspects of her life, seeing the positive aspects in everybody - patients, staff and friends alike. She was well respected by colleagues, patients and their families. The numerous colleagues who visited Beth at hospital and at home during her illness proved how popular she was too.

Beth moved to Dinas to live in 1993 and immediately threw herself into village life. She met Neill and they both moved to Pengwern to live in 1998.

She made a number of good friends in Dinas, friends who enjoyed the fun and the laughter of being around her, and who showed her and the family such kindness and support when she was ill.

Despite her demanding post, Beth always made time for her family. She and Neill created a beautiful home for themselves and their two sons, Cai and Math, and gave the boys every opportunity to take part in all types of activities.

Beth was extremely proud of Cai and Math, and she loved them to bits.

Beth was kind, caring and generous to her parents, her sisters and brother, and the wider family. She loved parties and weddings and brought flair and fun into all family gatherings.

We are thankful to her for enriching our lives, and for leaving behind so many wonderful memories.

The family left to mourn are Neill (partner), Cai and Math (sons), Robert and Llinos (parents), Gwenda, Delyth, Non and Islwyn (sisters and brother) and their families, Neill’s family in Stockport and several close family members and friends.

The service was held at Tabor Chapel, Dinas and the bearers were Roger Howell, Arwyn Thomas, David Jones, Bob Davies, Jeff James, John Ryan and Peter Nicholas.
