Spittal

JOAN Stella Barratt of Spittal passed away suddenly on September 12 at the home of her daughter.

Born in Hertfordshire in 1937, she was the only child of the late Anfield and Hepsie Elliott. Joan spent the first ten years of her life in Amersham, Buckinghamshire before moving to her father’s home city of Cardiff. There she attended Lansdowne School and Cleves College.

In her youth, Joan was an accomplished pianist and keen sportswoman. She competed in track and long distant cycle racing, holding several ladies records in the 1950’s. She also represented Wales in both cycling and swimming at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games.

The same year she married Stan and they had two children together before settling in Penarth.

In 1970 she joined the Royal Navy Reserves, as a radio operator.

After working for Cardiff Corporation and SGB, Joan retired due to ill health and moved to Pembrokeshire.

Here she found her dream cottage to renovate and settled in to village life. She enjoyed various crafts and loved her garden and many pets which she adopted over the years. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and was so proud of her eldest granddaughter getting in to university just before her death.

She leaves to mourn her son Ian, daughter Deborah, granddaughters Rebecca and Anna, son-in-law Paul, her beloved pets Megan, Darcy and Tom and many family members and friends.

The funeral was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium on September 19.

There were family flowers only but donations may be made to the Paul Sartori Foundation, c/o Mrs Maria Edwards, Cenarth, Pembroke Ferry, Pembroke Dock The funeral arrangements were carried out by FG Rees and Sons of Portfield Gate.

 

Mrs M A George

Letterston

MRS Meryl Ann George passed away suddenly but peacefully on September 6. She was 61 and had been bravely battling cancer, with great hope, strength and courage for some time until the very end. The death occurred at home during the early hours.

Born in Goodwick on September 7 1952 to the late William and Iris Rees, she was then raised at Llanreithan Mill, Mathry, before marrying and settling in Letterston in 1974. She was pre-deceased by an older brother, Terry Rees (2009) and a younger sister Yvonne Rees (1968).

Living in Letterston with husband Leslie George, Meryl worked for the local electricity board, before deciding to start a family in 1980.

When both children were old enough Meryl enjoyed a very long career, which included work at Letterston School, Fishguard High School, and most recently as a valued member of the Outpatients Department at Withybush Hospital. Meryl was often regarded as a hard working and friendly co-worker, who made many friends during her career.

Throughout her life she enjoyed many hobbies including golf, caravanning holidays, vintage working days with Leslie, British Touring Cars, playing with her treasured grandchildren and taking an active interest with the Letterston branch of Tenovus.

She also had a wide circle of friends, and enjoyed many an evening out, a quick coffee somewhere or even a long lunch. Meryl was always described by friends as true, honest and reliable. She was also a loving, un-selfish, courageous and devoted wife, mother and grandmother and will be sadly missed The funeral service was held at Felin Ganol Chapel, Solva on September 11. It was attended by many family and friends, with the Rev Geoffrey Eynon officiating, he showed affection and adding a personal touch when needed as a long standing family friend.

She leaves to mourn Leslie George (husband); Rachel George (daughter); Gareth George and Dominique Hearne (son and daughter-inlaw); Courtney and Harvey George (grandson and granddaughter); Haulwen Harries (mother-in-law) along with many close family members, supportive friends and kind neighbours.

The bearers were Phil James, Paul James and Shaun Morgan (cousins). Gareth George (son), Andrew George and Mark George (nephews), with Meurig Williams and Matthew George were ushers on arrival.

There were family flowers only, with donations being gratefully received in aid of Tenovus Cancer Charity and the Paul Satori Foundation.

Donations are being handled by W.G. Bernard Mathias Funeral Services of New Street, St. Davids who also carried out the funeral arrangements with efficiency and dedication.

 

Mr M Bidmead

Wisemans Bridge

MR Malcolm Bidmead of Cliff Road, Wisemans Bridge passed away on September 7 at Withybush Hospital. He was 70.

Originally from Swansea he spent his working life with the NHS for 25 years. When he retired he was a business manager for the West Glamorgan Health Authority, based in Swansea and Neath.

His interests were his famand ily, home, rugby and his pet dogs and cat. Malcolm was an animal lover.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Diana (wife); Paul and Stephen (sons); Fleur (step-daughter); Jamie (step-grandson); Deirdre (sister); Stella and family, Imelda, Brian and family, Andrew and Gillian, Claire, Rob and family, Eric, Heidi and family (nieces and nephews); great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews too numerous to mention plus Ann Davies and family, Michael Lynch and family, Callan family, Jonathan and Lily (cousins).

The service was held at Sardis Congregational Church on September 19 and was officiated by Rev Hywel Brown.

The bearers were Jamie Evans (step-grandson), Bernard Thomas, Geoff Davies and Stewart Wilde (friends).

Donations are for Ataxia UK.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by E C Thomas and Son, of Llanteg.

 

Mrs S Lewis

Pembroke

THERE was a full church at St Mary as family and friends gathered for the funeral of Sylvia Lewis, who died on September 26 aged 81.

The service was conducted by Rev Roger Jones who also gave a beautiful eulogy, the lesson being read by her youngest son Wayne Lewis famand there was also a tribute read by one of her grandchildren Sophie Lewis, Trombonist Marcus Reynolds played as mourners gathered.

Born Sylvia James in Gooses Lane, Pembroke in 1933, where she lived until she married her life partner and dear husband Edgar Lewis.

Husband and wife moved to Woodbine Terrace on the Green in Pembroke in 1952, where she enjoyed family life and raised nine children.

Sadly they lost Keith (Kiki) in a car accident in1985.

Sylvia was a loving mother and caring grandmother through and through, and could be found on many a Saturday afternoon watching firstly her sons and then grandsons playing football for many of Pembrokeshire’s local teams. Along with Edgar they were stalwart supporters of many a team on a wet and windy Pembrokeshire Saturday afternoon.

Sylvia was a Pembroke girl living in the town all her life.

In earlier times Sylvia loved to dance, and Haggars dance hall was a favourite place.

In later years her and Edgar could be found at Monkton Swifts or The Moat House Jiving away their Saturday nights.

When Edgar passed away in 2005 they had been married for 55 years. As a loving mother there was not one of her children she would not help if she could,. Sylvia worked hard to help anybody that needed it, a kind and generous women loved by many.

In later years she enjoyed being known as Nanny Sylvie, the much loved lollipop lady for Golden Manor School.

She leaves to mourn children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. There were many floral tributes at her graveside in St Michael’s cemetery where she was reunited again and laid to rest with her dear Edgar. Funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr N Roberts, Bush Street.

 

Mr R Betty

Neyland

CHARLES Ronald Betty passed away peacefully at Fairfield Nursing Home, Johnston on September 21 aged 93.

Ron built his home with his wife Peggy in 1951 (Harbour View) in Neyland, before Riga Avenue and College Park were built. They raised two children Joan and Michael, whilst they both worked, Ron as a builder and funeral director with his father Jack, and Peggy had various jobs in addition to raising the family. Also they worked in businesses together including a fish and chip shop in Neyland, High Street and finally a grocery shop in Kensington Road.

In February 1992 shortly before Ron retired, Peggy passed away, Ron missed her dearly and she was always in his thoughts.Late in 1993 Ron had a chance meeting with Dorothy and a long and devoted friendship developed and remained until he passed away. Both families have blessed the day that they met. Ron’s hobbies included sequence dancing, bowling with Neyland Bowling Club, and was a member of the British Legion.

Parc Gwyn was filled to capacity for the funeral and was officiated by the Rev Martyn Evans. The bearers were Messrs Allan Betty, Mark Davies, Bill Lawrence and Alan Larkin.

The family left to mourn are Joan and Willie Roberts (daughter and son-in-law); Michael and Carol (son and daughter-in-law); grandchildren Mark, wife Hillary, Gaynor, Nicola, Allan and Karen; sisters-in-law Violet and Emi, great grandchildren Ellia, Leila, Kiera, Carys, Darragh, Emma and Rebecca.

Also numerous members of the extended family.
