Narberth

A large gathering of family, friends and neighbours attended the funeral at St Mary’s Church, Wiston on Thursday November 13 of Mrs Glenys Ivy Hughes of Redstone Road, Narberth.

Ivy, as she liked to be called, attended Wiston School, before leaving at 14 to work at Colby Farm as a farm labourer with her father. Later, she met her husband Gilbert, married, and they settled at Toch Bridge Farm, where they raised their family and continued to live and work until they retired.

After retirement, Ivy devoted much of her time to the garden at their bungalow and delighted in donating the vegetables and flowers that she grew there to her friends and neighbours and the local coffee morning that she attended in Narberth until her death.

She was predeceased by her husband Gilbert James Hughes.

The family left to mourn are David and Yuqing (son and partner); Margaret and Edward (daughter and sonin- law); Lionel and Grace (grandchildren).

The service was officiated by Rev Nicholas Cale.

The bearers were Derek Hughes, Byron Williams, Mike Plumb and Adrian Ormond, and the funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and Son of Haverfordwest. There were family flowers only, but donations in lieu, if desired, can be made in memory of Ivy directly to the BBC’s Children in Need campaign.

 

Mr P Griffiths

Ambleston

MR Phillip Griffiths of Hook Farm, Ambleston passed away suddenly on October 3 at the age of 71.

Born and brought up at Hook Farm, he had farmed with his late wife Rose, who predeceased him 15 years ago. Farming and family were his life.

He had been president and a past chairman of Llysyfran YFC and took great delight in his children’s involvement in the club over the years. He was presently an active member of Treffgarne Discussion Group, Ambleston Senior Citizens and a member of Zions Hill Chapel, Spittal. He was one of the founder members of the Camrose Vintage Club.

The funeral service was held at Zions Hill Chapel, Spittal on October 11, which was attended by a very large gathering of family and friends. The service was officiated by Rev Martin Spain who gave a wonderful eulogy, assisted by Rev William Owen and Rev Geoffrey Eynon. The organist was Mr Julian Harries.

Phillip leaves to mourn his partner Anita; Jan and Colin Luke (daughter and son-in-law); Martin and Kath Griffiths (son and daughterin- law); Nigel Griffiths (son); Elinor and Rebecca Luke, Elizabeth Griffiths (granddaughters); Mrs Gwen Phillips and Mrs Dilys Beynon (sisters); Roland and Emma Beynon, Michael Beynon and Tania Lewis, Rhian and Huw Davies, Gethin Phillips, Carwyn Beynon (nephew and nieces); Vaughan and Mari Thomas (cousins) along with many close family members, supportive friends and neighbours. Unable to attend were Ann Plumber and Phyllis Edwards (cousins); Anita Phillips, Robert Phillips, Gail Hughes-Edwards (nieces and nephews).

The bearers were Richard James, Stuart Evans, Mark John, Wesley Spees, Pat Morrillo, Adrian Phillips. There were family flowers only and the funeral director was Paul Jenkins and Sons, who carried out the arrangements with care and understanding.

 

Mrs I Rogers

Pembroke

THE funeral of Mrs Irene(Rene) Rogers of Lord’s Meadow View, Pembroke, took place on Friday October 17 at St John’s Church, Pembroke Dock.

Rene was 92 and had spent the last year of her life as a resident of Pembroke Haven Residential Home.

Sadly her husband Ted had passed away in 1986 and son Gwyn also in May 2008. Margaret is her only remaining daughter and although she and her husband Jonathan and family live in Hertfordshire, they were very frequent visitors to Pembroke.

Rene also has four grandchildren Mark and Amy, Sian and Christopher and six great grandchildren Connie and baby Arthur and Isaac, Nia and Gwennan and little Naomi.

Rene had led a very active life and first lived in Pembroke Dock in Gwyther Street, when she moved there with Ted after the war.

Among other things she was a former shop owner of the Cromwell Stores in Pembroke Doc,k when she and Ted had lived in Hawkstone Road, before they retired to live in Pembroke. Rene was a past President of the WI, a lifelong member of the South Pembs Golf Club where she had been Ladies Captain in the mid 70’s. She attended St Andrew’s Church in Pembroke Dock for many years and was also proud to be an honorary member of the Inner Wheel (Pembroke) and was a collector for many years for the NSPCC and Lifeboat charities. She was also regularly in the audience of the Pembroke and District Male Voice Choir concerts, which she loved.

A celebration and remembrance of her life took place in St John’s Church, Pembroke Dock attended by her family and many friends and neighbours.

The chief mourners were Margaret and Jonathan (daughter and son-in-law); Mark and Amy (grandchildren ); John Demont, Ann Rogers (daughter-in-law), Sian and Jay, Chris and Jenny (grandchildren and spouses) and great grandchildren Isaac, Nia, Gwennan, and Naomi.

Sadly Eli (Mark’s wife and children Connie and Arthur) were ill and unable to attend from Hertfordshire.

Other family mourners were Rhona Barrett (niece) and family; Fred, Sue, Beth, James and baby Sophia from Horsham in Sussex; Andrew (nephew) and Tania Hackett from Southampton, Hampshire.

Readings were given by Revd Martin Evans - friend, Morgan Allen - friend and the Eulogy by Jonathan Tweed (Rene’s son-in-law).

The church service was officiated by Reverend Nicky Skipworth and at the interment at Llanion Cemetery.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by John Roberts, Funeral Directors, 51 Bush Street, Pembroke Dock. They will also receive donations to the National Osteoporosis Society in memory of Rene.

 

Miss S A Phillips

New Moat (formerly of Llanycefn)

THE death occurred at Withybush Hospital, on July 24, of Sophia Adeline Phillips (Beia), of Dan-yr-Eglwys, New Moat, formerly of Llwynbedw, Llanycefn, aged 87.

She was born and brought up in Llanycefn, the fourth child of Thomas and Harriet Ann Phillips, a sister to Mattie and the late Maggie, Gwilym and Myfanwy. She spent most of her life farming with her parents and brother at Llwynbedw, her family meant everything to her. She tenderly cared for her parents and for Gwilym.

The funeral took place on Friday August 1 with a public funeral at Rhydwilym Chapel where a large congregation attended.

The Reverend Eirian Wyn Lewis officiated at the service assisted by Revs. Llinos Edwards, Islwyn Selby and Geoffrey Eynon. Apologies for absence were received from Revs. Emyr Wyn Thomas, Guto Llewellyn, Roger Morgan, Ken Williams and Hywel Jones.

The bearers at the Chapel of Rest were Gareth Thomas, Ieuan Williams, Dylan Thomas and Aled Thomas and at the Chapel John Morris, John Williams, Jack Bowen and Lyn Howells.

The leaflets were distributed by Eilyr Davies and Mona Davies and the organist was Katrina Jenkins.

The principal mourners were Eirianwen and Ken (daughter and son in law); Dylan, Sian, Aled and Corrina (grandsons and wives); Kiera, Iwan and Steffan (great grandchildren); Mattie (sister); Morfydd and Arthur, Ieuan, Ann, Hafwen, Gareth, Novello, Ann and Stephen, Lisa (nephews and nieces); John (friend); John Jenkins, Gillian, Peter and Griff (cousins).

Unable to attend were Stella Bedford and Phyllis James (cousins).

There were family flowers only with donations to Kidney Wales Foundation, c/o Ann Thomas, Tir-y-Dderwen, Clunderwen.

The funeral arrangements were carried out with dignity by Ken Davies and Sons, Funeral Directors, Clunderwen.

 

Mrs O Harries

Fishguard Formerly of Velindre Farm, St.Nicholas.

THE death occurred peacefully at Withybush Hospital on October 9 at the age of 89. She was a devoted wife of Stephen and was very much loved by her three children John, Mair and Ann and Gaynor, Owen and Gerald (daughter and sons-in-law) and her nine grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.

She was born at Ffynnon Wen, Dinas and at the age of six months moved to Velindre Farm, St.Nicholas with her parents John and Martha Price and her elder sister Nan. She went to St.Nicholas Primary School and Fishguard Secondary School. After leaving school she farmed with her parents and sister until her fathers death in 1947 and then continued farming with her mother and sister until in 1948 she married Stephen Harries of Cilauwen Farm.

Her main interest in life was farming and she became a very keen stockwoman.

She was a life-long loyal member of Harmony Baptist Chapel, Pencaer and became a deaconess in 1991.

A large gathering of family and friends attended her funeral on October 14 at Harmony Chapel followed by interment at the cemetery.

The service was officiated by her minister the Rev John Roberts, assisted by Rev Aled Jenkins, Rev Geraint Morse and Rev Geoffrey Eynon.

The organist was Mrs Valerie Llewellyn.

The bearers were her six grandsons John, Robert, Meurig, Tom, Daniel and Carwyn.

The family left to mourn and principle mourners were Stephen (husband); John and Gaynor (son and daughterin- law); Mair and Owen, Ann and Gerald (daughters and son-in-laws). Also present were all her grandchildren, husbands, wives and partners and her only sister Mrs Nan Cornock and many other family members and friends to numerous to mention.

There were family flowers only and donations in memory of Olwen, if desired, to be made payable to Dementia U.K c/o Paul Jenkins and Sons, Feidr Castell, Fishguard SA62 9BB, who also carried out the funeral arrangements
