Dr Oonah Pim OBE

Dublin, Belfast and Solva

OONAH was born in Dublin in 1913 within her Quaker family where her earliest memories were of growing up amidst the conflict for independence, were seeing the snipers on neighbouring roof tops when she played and while those memories stayed with her, rather than troubling or traumatising they almost seemed to quietly register within, to be used later when she could set her unifying example.

Her education was at a Quaker Boarding School in Darlington and conscious of her abilities in physical education, she began teacher training in 1931 in the Bergman Osterberg Physical Training College in Dartford, one of the first colleges that taught physical education and encouraged the emancipation of women.

In 1936 her first job was as a teacher in the Berkhamsted Girls High School - Royal School for the Daughters of Officers of the Army and she was active with the Women’s Freedom League, her teaching continued on evacuation to Wiltshire at the start of the Second World War where she became an adviser and organiser for physical education in Wiltshire, later moving to Petersfield in Hampshire where her evenings were spent driving ambulances around Portsmouth assisting after the air raids. After the war she returned to the Dartford College as a senior lecturer in 1945.

Her career culminated in 1953 when she became the founding Principal of the Ulster College of Physical Education in Belfast, now amalgamated into the University of Ulster of today. This provided her with a wonderful opportunity to lead and establish physical education as an important part of teaching.

It was far from easy especially being a woman in the male dominated education environment of the times and her inner strength, allied to her lightness of spirit sustained her together with her Quaker background. Her knack of seeing both sides of a situation allowed her to set an example as she worked hard to unify her students despite being in a place riven by the worst excesses of religious division.

Her successes in Belfast spread well beyond her College commitments as she was much in demand by the wider community in Northern Ireland and elsewhere, acting as an adviser to the Department of Education in the Republic of Ireland to establish specialist teacher training. She was President of the Soroptimists and involved in youth clubs, The Keep Fit Association and the Central Council for Physical Recreation as well as being frequently invited to schools as a guest speaker at their prize days.

She retired to Solva in 1972 and this was followed with national recognition for her work when she was honoured with the OBE in 1973. Settling in North Pembrokeshire she was a founding member to St Davids Local Quaker Meeting, where she was clerk for a number of years and a much loved member of the meeting. Interestingly she also attended St Michaels RC church services, wishing to continue to share with her friends in various denominations that included developing the ties that assisted establish the St Davids and District Council of Churches.

Many hours were also spent visiting the elderly of the area most of whom were decades younger than her until she finally slowed down when she stopped driving at nearly 98 years of age. After a life devoted to teaching and support of others she leaves her nephew David with his wife Eileen and family in Bangor, Northern Ireland her brother Hugh having died in 2001.
