Mrs B Allen

Carew

MRS Betty Allen of Kesteven Court, Carew passed away at Ashdale Nursing Home on January 26. She was 85.

Originally from Lawrenny she was a housewife and after being widowed in 1988 worked at Manor Park Wildlife Park until her retirement.

Her main interests were her family and Carew cricket and football clubs.

She was predeceased by her husband Mr John Allen.

The family left to mourn are Monica (daughter); Paul (partner); Kara and Peter Rossi (granddaughter and husband); Angelo and Georgia (great grandson and partner); Dario (great grandson), plus brothers, sister, numerous nieces and nephews.

The service was held at Caradocs Church, Lawrenny and was officiated by Rev Paul Boyle.

The bearers were Angelo Rossi, Peter Rossi, Denzil Hughes, Roy Hughes, Gary Sefton and Rob Hicks.

Mr D Gainfort

St Ishmaels

A large gathering of family and friends attended the funeral at Dale Church on February 2 of Mr Dennis Gainfort who passed away at Withybush Hospital on 21January 21.

Dennis was well liked by those who knew him, and will be sadly missed.

The service and interment at Dale Cemetery was officiated by Rev. Andrew Johnson.

The bearers were Ronald Gainfort, Glyn Pawlett, Jeffrey Bowen and Jamie Gainfort.

The principal mourners were Yvonne (wife); Jason and Christine (son and daughter-in-law), Lewis and Aaron (grandchildren); sisters, brothers along with numerous other relatives and friends.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be sent to Mr Glyn Pawlett, 1 Brookside Estate, St Ishmaels SA62 3TE, towards two benches to be placed at Rickeston Mill Nursing Home and St Ishmaels Cricket Field, in memory of Dennis.

Mr J Smith

Formerly of Castlemartin

MR John William Smith passed away after a relatively short illness, at Ashdale Nursing Home, Pembroke, on November 23 2014 aged 96.

Known as Jack, he was born in 1918 at Hoplass Cottage, Rhoscrowther to John and Maud Smith, the 6th child and eldest son of nine children. Educated at Pwllcrochan School, he then went on to employment at several farms in the area before bidding for, and acquiring, along with his brother Leslie, several Rabbit Trapping Rights in South Pembs.

Jack was also well known and highly respected within the farming circles for his skills as a slaughter-man/ butcher.

In July 1946 he married Mary Ellen Nicholas (Molly), and made their home in Castlemartin.

At that time Jack was working at Court Farm in the village.

In approximately 1962 he left the farming industry and joined the construction industry, firstly in the building of the Regent Oil Refinery until its opening in 1964, and thereafter for a number of building firms within the South Pembs area. In approximately 1969 he was employed in the building of Pembroke Power Station, and upon its completion was successful in gaining employment with CEGB, remaining with them until his retirement in March 1983.

Jack was predeceased by his wife in 1970 and leaves to mourn Gordon and Wendy, Alan and Avril, Raymond and Andree (sons and daughtersin- law); Carol and Geoffrey (daughter and son-in-law); grandchildren Christopher, Susan, Beverley, Dawn, Michelle, Tony, Tracy, Marie with their respective partners, along with twenty great grandchildren; Phyllis Richards (sister); Doris Smith, Doris Rogers, Freda Nicholas (sisters-in-law), plus numerous nephews and nieces.

The funeral took place at Parc Gwyn on December 3 with the Reverend Geoffrey Gwyther officiating. Ashes will later be interred at Castlemartin Church of which he was Churchwarden for 16 years.

Jack was cared for by staff at Ashdale Nursing Home.

John Roberts and Son carried out the funeral arrangements.

Donations offered in lieu of flowers will go to the staff at Ashdale and can be left with Messrs John Roberts and Son.

Mrs N Millar

Pembroke Dock

MRS Nesta Millar passed away peacefully at Caldey Grange Care Home, Pentlepoir on January 10 at the age of 97.

Nesta was the youngest of four children of the late Alfred and Mary Grieve, and was the widow of the late William (Billy) Millar, and mother to Robert, Rachel, Nesta and Richard, and grandmother to ten grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Nesta attended Pembroke Dock Grammar School and when WW2 broke out she joined the WAAF and was posted to the Records Office in Gloucester.

She met William (Billy) Millar when he was based in Pembroke Dock on the Sunderlands and they married in 1945 at Trinity Chapel, Pembroke Dock.

After the war Nesta worked for the Refuge Assurance Company and Billy worked as a crash repair specialist at the Waterside Coachworks.

The family moved to Finchley, North London and Nesta again worked for the Refuge Assurance Company.

They returned to Pembroke Dock in 1978 and Nesta began assisting local people with the Citizens Advice Bureau where she remained for a number of years. Nesta helped a number of organisations with fund raising events especially Christian Aid and RAFA.

Nesta’s funeral took place on Tuesday January 20 with a service at Zion Chapel, Pembroke Dock followed by interment at Llanion Cemetery, Pembroke Dock.

The principal mourners were Robert and Janice (son and daughter-in-law); Rachel and John (daughter and sonin- law); Nesta and Robert (daughter and son-in-law); Richard (son) together with ten grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Donations in lieu of flowers for the RAF Benevolent Fund which may be sent to Mr G Thomas, 34 Charles Thomas Avenue, Pembroke Dock SA72 6UR.

Mr E T J Watts

Loveston

MR Emrys Trevor John Watts of Loveston, Kilgetty passed away at Withybush Hospital on January 4. He was 71.

As a native of Loveston he was born at Loveston Farm in 1943.

He attended Loveston School and when he left there he joined his father, working on the farm.

He was vicars warden at St Leonards Church, Loveston.

He enjoyed gardening both vegetables and flowers, watching football, rugby and horse racing.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Ann and Tony Jones, Brenda and Huw Scourfield, Valerie and Glyn Gronrow, Christine and Andrew Davies, Christine and Max Bevan, Sue and Andy Storey (nieces and husbands); Carol Daye and Eileen Daye (nieces); Gareth Daye, Robert Daye, Peter Daye, Keith Daye (nephews); Geoffrey and Roz Daye (nephew and wife); Catherine Morton, Victoria Scourfield, Alys Gronrow, Laura Daye (great nieces); Aimee Gronow and Morgan (great niece and partner); Morgan Daye and Harry Storey (great nephews); Auntie Olive and various cousins.

Unable to attend were Maureen and John Parry (niece and husband); Debbie Thomas (niece); Matthew and Owen Davies, Dafydd Bevan and Daniel Storey (great nephews).

The service was held at St Leonards Church, Loveston followed by interment in the church cemetery.

It was officiated by Father Paul Davies assisted by Rev Sylvia Temple and Rev Graham Lloyd (cousin).

Mr J O Harries

Jeffreyston

Mr John Owen Harries of Jeffreyston, Kilgetty passed away at Withybush Hospital on January 20. He was 83.

John was the second son of the later Leslie and Winifred Harries. He was born at Middlehook, Robeston Wathen in 1931. The family moved to Vallen Farm, Martletwy when he was 18 months old and at 13 years moved with the family to Wallaston Farm, Hundleton. In October 1950 he moved to Honeyscroft, Jeffreyston.

John was a young farmer, a keen sheep-shearer and fisherman and enjoyed hunting and was a champion ploughman.

He married Doreen in May 1956 and they had four daughters Dawn, Wendy, Linda and Janet.

In later years, he enjoyed point to pointing, gardening and his small greenhouse.

When his grandchildren arrived he spent many hours enjoying their company and passed on his many skills such as knitting, drawing and how to grow tasty tomatoes.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Doreen (wife); Dawn (daughter); Wendy and Jonathan (daughter and son-in-law); Linda and David (daughter and son-in-law); Janet and Kieran (daughter and son-inlaw); Ceri, Bethan, Francesca and Ryan (grandchildren); Brenda Lawrence (sister); John Hughes (brother-inlaw); Jean and Eryl Llewllyn (sister and brother-in-law); Elwyn and Mary Harries (brother and sister-in-law); Tudor and Dianne Harries (brother and sister-in-law); Monica and Phillip Vanner (sister and brother-in-law); Gordon and Shirley Harries (brother and sister-in-law); Olwen Clode (sister); Vincent and Doreen Hurlow (brother- in-law and sister-in-law); Don Hurlow (brother-in-law); Rosemary Hurlow (sister-inlaw), plus cousins, nephews and nieces too numerous to mention.

A large gathering of family, friends and neighbours attended the funeral at Jeffreyston Church on February 2 followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, Narberth and was officiated by Father Paul Davies.

The bearers were Colin Beynon, David Shanklin, Derek Scourfield, Kieron Phelan, Phillip Davies and Paul Hay.

Mrs L B Jones

Begelly

MRS Lilian Blanche Jones of “The Buttles” New Road, Begelly, Kilgetty passed away at Belmont Nursing Home,Tenby on January 8 aged 77.

A proud native of Laugharne, Carmarthenshire, Lilian enjoyed her childhood years with many of her close family and friends before moving with her parents to Loveston Mill near Kilgetty at the age of ten. On leaving her education at Loveston School, Lilian then went on to work tending to the poultry at Langdon Farm where she forged many lasting friendships.

It was around this time that she met Peter whom she married in 1957 and they made their home at Weston Lane, Martletwy before moving to “The Buttles.” Begelly.

The following years saw Lilian concentrating on bringing up her three children.

More recently, Lilian fulfilled her passion for overseas travel, especially cruises (which she did extensively in her later years) and looking after the holiday makers on the caravan park that she ran with her husband Peter before his death in 2012.

There was a large gathering present at the funeral which took place at Zoar Chapel, Llanteg where Rev Alwyn Evans officiated.

The bearers were Robert Jones (grandson); Benedict Large (grandson-in-law); Richard Jenkins and David Mitchell (neighbours and friends). The chief mourners were Paul and Wendy (son and daughter in law); Mandy (daughter); Lorraine and Tony (daughter and sonin- law); Kirsty, Benedict , Robert and Hazel (grandchildren); Annabel and Henry (great grandchildren); Maureen and Willie (sister and brother-in-law); Amelia and David (sister and brotherin- law); Patrick and Valerie (brother-in-law and sister-inlaw) and many other family and friends.

Mrs J J E James

Amroth

THE death occurred at Himalaya, Amroth, the home of Mrs Janet Joy Elizabeth James on January 7. She was 72.

She was born in the Frenchay area of Bristol in 1942 and later lived in the Southmead area of Bristol throughout her school years.

On leaving school she worked for a wholesale pharmaceutical company in Bristol as a telephone audio typist taking sales orders from chemist shops in and around Bristol up until 1969 when her first child Martyn was born followed by Nicholas in 1970 and Kevin in 1973.

She met Glyn at Bristol Saracens Rugby Club in 1964 and they were married in August 1967 at St Marys Church in Henbury, Bristol.

In the late 1960s Janet undertook the catering facilities at the rugby club and also started a catering company for weddings and private parties, finally undertaking the catering for Gloucestershire County Cricket Club in the early 1970’s period, whilst also caring for her mother who was in poor health as a result of breast cancer and several strokes.

In 1976 Glyn and Janet moved to the Wye Valley in Monmouth to run The Bell Inn public house in Redbrook near Monmouth which was a pleasant period in her life, where many firm friendships were established and she was able to indulge her fondness for animals looking after new born lambs and the purchase of ponies and involving herself and the boys in agricultural pleasantries.

Janet and Glyn moved back to Bristol in the early 1980s where she became secretary for Glyn, dealing with all the typing requirements for his business, organising and preparing survey reports right up until recent months.

During the early 1980s period she began child fostering including high risk babies and this continued up until 1989 when Glyn and Janet purchased the village shop in Summerhill moving into their holiday home in Pendine, which they built in the 1980s period and the boys all initially worked in the shop until they developed their own businesses.

Janet and Glyn moved to Amroth in the mid 1990s purchasing Groveside Cottage and later moving to Himalaya only a short distance away.

Janet was an avid animal lover and bred King Charles spaniels in the 1970s and then Yorkshire terriers in the 1990s up until recent years.

Janet had a lively personality and enjoyed taking part in all social activities with much involvement in Amroth Community Carnival and fund raising events in The Amroth Arms.

She was regularly involved in assisting with the grandchildren, looking after them and picking them up from school when needed.

She will be deeply missed by all friends and associates.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Glyndwr James (husband); Martyn, Nicholas and Kevin (sons); Kathy, Anneka and Helen (daughters-in-law); Kaylee, Andrew, Lewis and Landan (grandchildren); Milli and Anabella (great grandchildren.

Mr B Morgan

Pembroke Dock

MR Brian Morgan of Gwyther Street, Pembroke Dock passed away on January 11 at Withybush Hospital. He was 76.

During his life he started work at 15 as a miner in the Welsh Valley’s. He joined the army in 1958 and went back to the mines two years later.

He married in 1961 and then went to work at Pembroke Power Station for 15 years.

Sadly ill health forced him to retire at 45. Later he was diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease which he faced with courage and determination.

His main interests centered around his family and grandchildren.

He played bowls at Pembroke Dock Bowling Club for 30 years.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Mrs Jean Morgan (wife); Robert, Richard and Paul (sons); Connor and Jack (grandsons) and step grandson Jordan; Reg and wife (brother and family); Sylvia and Patricia and their respective families (sisters).

The service was held at St Johns Church, Pembroke Dock and was officiated by Rev Nicky Skipworth.

The bearers were Robert and Richard Morgan (sons); Tony Gallagher (nephew); Charlie Morris (life-long friend); Brian Dowling and Ken Edwards (bowlers).

Miss A M Harries

Maiden Wells

MISS Alice Mary Harries of The Old Post Office, Maiden Wells passed away peacefully with family at her side on January 3 at South Pembs Hospital, Pembroke Dock.

Alice was the eldest daughter of the late John and Maggie Harries of Maiden Wells and the beloved sister of Edna and Margie and the late Jim and Wilfred Harries.

Brother and sister Frank and Joan died as infants.

Alice was born and brought up at the family home in Maiden Wells and lived there her whole life apart from time spent in hospital. Alice spent seven years of her childhood recovering from Tuberculosis at the Kensington Hospital, St Brides. Despite her illnesses, Alice maintained a happy disposition and loved visitors. Although housebound in later years, Alice wrote and received an abundance of birthday cards and letters, made many telephone calls, keeping in touch with everyone she came into contact with. She will be sorely missed by all who were privileged to know her.

The funeral took place at Gilead CM Church with the Rev Jonathon Kirk officiating and Mrs Chris Lloyd playing the organ.

Interment took place in the churchyard. A very moving tribute which had been sent from Glasgow by a former minister of Gilead, the Rev Phil Steed was read during the service by Rev Kirk. The tribute described Alice’s love for the Lord, her kindness and welcoming nature and how the long time spent in hospital had not made her bitter, instead speaking fondly about the people she had met and the friends she had made during those years.

The principal mourners were sisters Mrs Edna Merriman and Mrs Margaret Brown; Julia and Richard Johns, Paul Harries, Susan and Paul Watkins, John Merriman, Sarah and Stephen Jackson, Heather Payne, Sandra and Gareth Davies, Sonia Hay, Frank and Jackie Brown (nephews and nieces), together with numerous great and great great nephews, nieces and many other family members, friend and neighbours; Mrs Beryl Harries (sister-inlaw); Chris Payne and Geoff Hay (nephews-in-law); Lesley Merriman (niece-in-law) were unable to attend.

The bearers were nephews and nephews-in-law John Merriman, Stephen Jackson, Gareth Davies and Frank Brown.

Mr I Davies

Pembroke Dock

MR Iorwerth Davies of Munro Court, Pembroke Dock passed away at home on January 16. He was 77.

Originally from Merthyr Tydfil he had lived in Pembroke Dock for 45 years.

He served in the army and then worked at Pembroke Dock Dockyard on salvage boats until illness forced him to take early retirement at the age of 49. He played darts in the Rose and Crown and was captain for many years.

He was predeceased by his wife Marilyn Davies.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Jonathan and Monica (son and daughter-in-law); Meryl and Dale (daughter and partner); David (son); Sharon and Jamie (granddaughter and partner); Laura and Orry (granddaughter and partner); Leigh (granddaughter); Joanne (granddaughter); Jason and Danielle (grandson and partner); Andrew and Claire (grandson and partner); Silke (granddaughter); Irene (granddaughter); Darren (grandson) plus all great grandchildren; Glynne (sister); Margaret (cousin), plus nieces and nephews.

The service was held at St Johns Church followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn. It was officiated by Reverend Caroline Mansell and the bearers were Jamie Tree and Jason Davies (grandsons), Peter Scott and Christopher Miller (nephews).

Cilgwyn, Newport

THE funeral of the late Mr Malcolm Ladd took place on November 20 at Caersalem Chapel. The service was officiated by Rev Alwyn Daniels and the organist was Mrs Menna James. There were family flowers only arranged by Llinos Ladd of True Tulips with donations in lieu if desired for Ysgol Bro Ingli or Newport Surgery being received by Paul Jenkins and Sons, of Fishguard.

 

Mrs N W M Richards

Hasguard Cross

THE death occurred on January 14 of Mrs Noreen Winifred Mary Richards of Hasguard Cross, Dale Road at Withybush Hospital. She was 88.

Born and brought up in Milford Haven, she trained as a nurse at Glangwili Hospital, Carmarthen and later returned to Pembrokeshire as a TB nurse at Kensington Hospital, St Brides, where she met her husband William at a local dance. After their marriage Noreen became a farmers wife and played an active role in the running of the family farm. In 2012 they celebrated 60 years of marriage.

Her main interests were her family and friends, gardening and the WI and Red Cross. She attended North Road Baptist Chapel until ill health prevented her from attending.

She was predeceased by her husband William James Richards in 2013.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Peter Richards, Paul Richards, Martin and Katharine Jones, Simon and Alison Richards, Rebecca Bricknell, Adam and Jemima Richards, Rachel and Hannah Jones, Lorna, Alice, John and Jennifer Richards (children and grandchildren); Mrs Brenda Fee (sister-in-law) and many nephews and nieces too numerous to mention.

The service was held at Parc Gwyn on January 22 and was officiated by Mrs Margaret Price.

The bearers were David Charles, Lloyd Davies, Andrew Davies and Andrew George.
