Mr I G Cripwell

MHSM Dip HSM

Creselly

THE funeral was held on February 19 of Ian Graeme Cripwell of The Jays, Whitehill, Cresselly, who passed away at the Aga Khan Hospital, Mombasa, Kenya, on February 3.

The service at Parc Gwyn Crematorium was led by Humanist Funeral Celebrant, Michael Ashbridge, and as requested by Ian’s family was a Celebration of His Life.

The principal mourners were Gill Cripwell (wife), Lee-Anne Cripwell-Dunning and Matt Dunning (daughter and son-in-law), Stuart Cripwell and Diana Rothery (son and partner), Daniel Cripwell and Clare Gover (son and fiancée), Charlotte, Apollonia and Rafferty (grandchildren).

The bearers were Stuart and Daniel Cripwell, Matt Dunning and Daniel Higginson.

Ian was born in Staffordshire on June 22 1952 living in Rowley Park until he met and married Gill in 1973. An avid Wolverhampton Wanders Football club fan, a love that was passed to him from his Dad, and has been passed onto his sons, Stuart and Daniel, meant there are numerous vivid memories of a cramped North Bank End.

Such was his love of Wolves that Stuart read the poem “This is our Love” during the service, a poem that hangs in view on the Jack Harris stand at Wolves.

When growing up Ian was always into his various motor vehicles, an interest which stayed with him all of his life. Starting on scooters and ending up in his late teens with a Mini and then his famous Green MG midget soft top which spent as much time on the hard shoulder as it did on the road!

In his early twenties Ian met Gill on a blind Date at a train station in Wolverhampton.

A blind date which would lead to 44 years together, 41 of which spent married.

This stage of Ian’s life saw some change, not only with Gill and Ian starting a family but also with a move away from Staffordshire to Norfolk where Ian’s long career within the NHS continued with success.

Starting his career as a Wage Clerk at the age of 16 years at Mid Staffs Hospital, Staffordshire, Ian’s career was incredible, and would see him moving up through the ranks of Hospital Management and from Staffordshire, to Norfolk, to Pembrokeshire, where he was General Manager of Acute, Community and Ambulance Services of Pembrokeshire NHS Trust from 1989–1996. In 1997 Ian arrived in Mombasa, Kenya where he flourished on a personal and excelled on a professional level for the next ten years. He held positions of Chief Executive Officer for both Aga Khan Hospitals Mombasa and Nairobi holding responsibilities in the management of Aga Khan Hospitals in Pakistan, Tanzania and India.

Ian overcame strong ethnic, religious and cultural divides while in Kenya and in typical fashion immersed himself within the situation gaining respect from all with his warm giving nature, his dedication to his job and his ability to defuse even the most turbulent situations with his well-known sense of humour.

The Services of Remembrance held for Ian in Mombasa and Nairobi were attended by many all wanting to pay their respects and his passing also being recognized by communities and organisation’s around the world.

Ian’s wealth of experience from Staffordshire, Norfolk, Pembrokeshire and finally Kenya, enabled him to launch his consultancy career. All of this bought him together working for organisations such as the World Bank and The EU in places such as Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, The Philippines, Georgia and even a 8 month stint in the frozen plains of Tajikistan.

Ian was highly regarded and respected all around the globe for the work he undertook, managing to work in some of the most beautiful places of the planet.

Ian and Gill’s marriage would see them have four children together Lee, Lee- Anne, Stuart and Daniel, Lee sadly passing away shortly after being born.

Ian was a keen amateur Radio Ham, a past time he pursued both here in the UK with the Pembrokeshire Amateur Radio Contest group and in Kenya.

In Kenya, Ian discovered Deep Sea Fishing and in this a new sport was discovered, a hobby which Ian approached with the same unmistakable drive and passion as he did all things in life and he spent many hours on his boats.

From fishing to football and also a trained swimming coach with Gill, they both were members of the Tenby dolphins with Lee-Anne and Stuart, both good swimmers with Stuart representing Wales was a proud moment for them both. Even more so now that Stuart’s daughter Charlotte, who was a huge part of Ian’s life, has taken up swimming and is representing the Under 11’s in San Francisco.

His passion most of all was his unrelenting dedication to being an incredible husband, Dad and Babu.

Everything Ian did was to support his family.

His family were the centre of his life far beyond anything else, pastimes or careers. With the long awaited arrival of Lee-Anne and Matt’s twins last year, a new light in Ian was lit.

Apple and Raffy loved being with their Babu, and he adored being with them.
