Mr J Pritchard

Neyland

JOHN passed away peacefully at home on February 15, surrounded by his family.

The funeral service took place on March 3 and was lead by Reverend Alan Chadwick with a family service at the house then onward to Parc Gwyn.

John was born in 1935 in No.1 Charles Street, Neyland, eventually moving to Cambrian Road with his parents Jack and Mary and sisters Betty and Maureen. He enjoyed his time in school, with his favourite subjects being Maths, Physics and Chemistry, but out of necessity had to leave to early get a job on the local railway. John was such a promising pupil that his headmaster took the unusual step of calling to the house to tell his parents that he should reconsider and stay on to study further, but unfortunately this was not an option and he chose leave to support his family. He enjoyed his time working as a fireman on the railway and had circumstances been different then he would surely have retired as a steam train driver.

His time on the railway was punctuated by his National Service, serving with the Royal Artillery in Germany for two years. On his return from National Service, John met Betty at Neyland Youth Club in 1956 and after a ‘brief ’ five year courtship, they married in Llanstadwell Church and made their home in Riverside Avenue, Neyland, before moving to Mastlebridge in 1965. Their son Mark was born in 1966.

John travelled around for a time working in the construction industry, for Whessoe, building oil tanks, but was lucky to be able to return to his beloved Neyland and get a job at the Gulf Refinery working as a Process Operator loading railway and road wagons and well as loading and discharging oil tankers.

He made many friends and enjoyed great camaraderie with his colleagues.

He enjoyed his foreign holidays in his later years with Betty and especially enjoyed their time spent in Madeira and Malta.

Johns hobbies included gardening, starting with vegetables but then graduated to growing his beautiful flowers from seed. His garden was always immaculate with hardly a blade of grass out of place and its upkeep will pose a stern challenge for his grandson Tom to maintain!

John also took a great interest in photography and had a fine collection of photo’s taken of the visiting foreign ships and of his many workmates from his time at Gulf.

He also enjoyed watching his grandson Tom playing cricket for Neyland and there was always a fiver on offer as an incentive for a hat trick of wickets.

John played football as a youngster in school as rugby was not encouraged, or played. He spent most Saturdays either following the Scarlets at Stradey Park, with Mark, while Betty shopped. He also followed Neyland Rugby Club and occasionally enjoyed an after match pint with friends. He also had a soft sport for Neath Rugby Club and latterly the Ospreys.

John had a particular love of nature, especially the wild birds that visited his garden to feed on the abundant food he left out for them. He also enjoyed telling his grandchildren about the different species that visited the garden and had recently completed the RSPB ‘Big Garden Birdwatch’ survey at the end of January with Elinor.

John was a quiet man who did not seek attention, but was the perfect husband, father, father-in-law and grandfather and will be desperately missed by all that were fortunate to know him.

The principal mourners were Betty (wife); Mark and Michaela (son and daughter in law); Thomas, Bethan and Elinor (grandchildren); Maureen and Peter Mowthorpe (sister and brother in law); Robert and Valerie Nicholas (brother and sister-inlaw).

The bearers were Tom Pritchard (grandson); Richard Nicholas (nephew); Christopher Mowthorpe (nephew) and James Mowthorpe (nephew).

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons of Milford Haven. Dr Matthew Melville Jones and Dr Wilson cared for John during his illness.

Donations for Greenacres Animal Rescue, Haverfordwest and Paul Sartori may be sent to Mrs A. Hackett, 21 Church Road, Llanstadwell, Milford Haven, SA73 1EB.

The shoes boxes donated from Penuel Chapel were sent to many countries, not to mention the knitted nativity sets, Father Christmas and assorted animals requested by others appreciating her amazing prowess with knitting needles.

The Chapel at Penuel was her salvation, her faith was unwavering throughout her life. Dorothea enjoyed an enviable relationship with her sister-in-law, Beryl Payne, who tragically died in late 2014. Her friends and family from the Chapel were frequent visitors whilst she was in hospital or home.

They were a great source of support and comfort to her, together with members of other local Chapels that she had visited whilst enjoying better health.

Her family were extremely important to her, Michael and wife Katharine and their children David, Beagan and Zoe live in Edinburgh. Their visits to Wood VIllage were a great source of enjoyment to her, as were her return trips to Edinburgh. Stephen and Jane moved seven years ago to be near her in Wood Village, from Shrewsbury, whilst her granddaughter, Nicola remained in Shrewsbury and married Christopher in 2009.

The arrival of her first greatgrandson, Thomas Benjamin was a joy.

Mrs L Thomas

Haverfordwest

IT is with deepest regret that Allen John Thomas announces the sad passing of Mrs Lillian Thomas.

Lillian was born into a hard working Lancashire family where she attended the local Wigan School.

She soon developed qualities that would set her in good stead for her future life.

Her skills were many including joining the Womens Land Army in Hereford. To her it was the good life enjoying open fields that in those days many would only dream of.

Lillian had three children and eventually, after renovating many homes to make ends meet, moved to Pembrokeshire due to Allen’s employment advancement.

Lillian become a member of the local church in Haverfordwest and enjoyed the friendship which overtime became close friends and sometimes a confidante, which gave her a sense of belonging.

She often displayed this by amusing many an audience with her funny amusing skits on special church occasions.

Lillian also enjoyed singing and was so proud that she could belt out a tune anytime.

She loved making the best Victoria sandwich ever.

She was so talented in all aspects of life, a wonderful sense of humour, who treasured her family in Wigan and here her immediate family but most of all her true love for her ever devoted husband.

As Lillian would have wanted there will be a small service and get together to pay respects at Stonecroft, Portfield Gate, Haverfordwest SA62 3LS which will be held on Saturday March 28 at 12pm to share treasured memories with laughter and refreshments following.
