Mr D Davies

Nevern, Newport

MR Des Davies of Morawel, Nevern, Newport, passed away suddenly at Morriston Hospital, on January 13, at the age of 76.

A native of Nevern, he was the only child of the late Jack and Annie Davies and had lived and worked all his life on the farm, Morawel.

The service was held on January 23 at the Chapel of Rest in Fishguard and internment at Penuel Cemetery, the service was officiated by Rev Alwyn Daniels. Des’ popularity within the community was shown by the large gathering of people who attended the funeral.

The family left to mourn and principle mourners are Joyce Davies (wife); Antony, Wendy, Bethan (son and daughters); Annette, Wyn, Chris (daughter and son-inlaw); Neil, Lee, Ross, Megan, Ifan, George and Harry (grandchildren); Alex Davies (great-grandchild); Siần, Amber and Laura (grandchildren’s partners); Roy Phillips, Iris Grover, Lynne Phillips (cousins); Mair Hughes (aunt); Carol Harries, Eileen and Emrys and Dylan Thomas (cousins) and many relatives, friends too numerous to mention, along with many members of his show friends from all over the country. Unable to attend Dorothy (cousin).

The bearers were Dai Thomas, Simon Jones, Simon Barnes, Keith Evans, Lloyd Williams and Gerwyn Davies.

Mr R Palmer

Pembroke Dock

FREDERICK Roy Palmer, known to all as ‘Roy’ of Church Street, Pembroke Dock, passed away suddenly on February 24 at Withybush Hospital. He was 75.

Born at King William Street, Pembroke Dock in 1939, Roy was the second child of Dennis and Elizabeth Palmer.

Roy attended Llanion School and at the age of 11 moved on to the Coronation School.

After leaving school at 15, he went to work in the Woollen Factory for a while, then in 1954 his British Rail journey began. During his time with British Rail, he travelled back and forth on the South Wales line. He achieved many promotions, too many to mention, before retiring, he became Freight Officer in Port Talbot, finally retiring in 1999. Roy continued to support his great passion for the railway by joining the British Rail Retirement Association.

He became a faithful member, travelling up and down the country to many meetings and gatherings. Later, he joined The British Transport Pensions Federation in Swansea, again proving a very faithful member, attending many functions. His many work colleagues have spoken many kind words about Roy.

Roy’s other interests were his computer class, which he attended for 10 years. He was a loyal member of the class and will be greatly missed by all his classmates.

Principal mourners were Sheila John (sister); Michael Palmer (brother); Martin, Samantha, Stella, Natasha, Antonia, Karen, David, Clare, Jason, Donna, Michelle, Michael and Zane (nieces and nephews) together with nieces and nephews too many to mention. He will be greatly missed by everyone and leaves them with many fond memories. The bearers were Martin John, Darryl John- Davies, Luke Helm, Ryan Maynard, Jason Randall and Lloyd Rhys-Davies (nephews and great-nephews).

A large gathering of friends and family attended the service on March 12 at St John’s Church, Pembroke Dock.

A reading entitled ’Roy, It’s Time To Go’ was read by his niece, Stella Davies.

Roy was laid to rest at Llanion Cemetery.

The service was officiated by the curate Rev Caroline Mansell.

The family were so grateful to everyone for all the kind words spoken of Roy at this sad time.

Mrs O E Carr

Lamphey

MRS Olwyn Elizabeth Carr of Cleggar Park, Lamphey passed away on February 16 at Withybush Hospital. She was 92.

Olwyn started work on leaving school in the office of Woolworths store in Pembroke.

When the war started she enlisted in WRAF. On her demob she obtained work with T P Hughes, a furniture and general drapers establishment in Tenby.

After her marriage she moved to live in Rugby and until retirement she worked alongside her husband in the offices of rugby county council.

She played golf, loved cooking, but mostly loved her home and garden, where she spent many happy hours with her husband Dennis and her late brother Edgar.

The family left to mourn are William Dennis Carr (husband); Ivor John (brother); Betty John (sister-in-law); Frank and Anthony John (nephews); Doreen John (sister-in-law); Kevin John, Eileen Hearne (nephew and niece); Eric Carr (brotherin- law); Andrew and Olwyn (nephews); John and Susan Carr (brother and sister-inlaw); Beryl Mowbray (sisterin- law and family); Joan Ebsworth (sister-in-law and family); Lilian Carr (sisterin- law and daughters); Eileen Hulbert (niece and family).

The funeral was held at Bethel Baptist Chapel followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn and it was officiated by Rev Michael Bave.

The bearers were Keith Hulbert, Mark Parcell, Paul Hay and Stewart Trehearne.

Mr R V J Bruce

Keyston

RONALD Victor James Bruce of Heronsway, Keyston passed away suddenly on February 3 at Withybush Hospital. He was 90.

The funeral took place on February 20 at Parc Gwyn, Narberth.

Ronald was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather he is survived by his wife Jill, children Martin, Sandra and James, grandchildren Gary and Emily and great grandson Samuel, he also leaves behind family in England and Canada.

Ron was born in 1924 in St Pancras, London and was brought up in Kentish Town. He also lived in Bishops Stortford and Hatfield in Hertfordshire before moving to the village of Keyston in Pembrokeshire in 1987.

Ron had a varied working life spending much of it in the plumbing and building trade firstly as a tradesman then advancing to sales and management, before retirement Ron worked at Neyland Training teaching students about the building trade and arranging work placements.

He married Jill in 1974 and they celebrated their 40th (Ruby) wedding anniversary in November 2014. Ron was very keen on sport, watching Haverfordwest County AFC play at Bridge Meadow, was a huge fan of horse racing and also had an interest in boxing. He played short mat bowls for and with various clubs in Pembrokeshire, and in the 1950’s played tennis and was a keen cyclist. Ron loved gardening and if there were no gardening jobs to do on a nice day he could always be found reading the paper in the garden.

Ron had been on dialysis for a number of years despite this he remained in good health still living at home with his wife Jill and able to drive, go shopping and work in the garden. Most people who knew his were surprised he was 90, as he always appeared much younger.

He loved life and lived it to the full right to the end.

The service was carried out by Roy Folland and Son, Haverfordwest and it was officiated by Rev Huw George.

Mrs K J Sharp

Pembroke Dock

MRS Kathleena ‘Joyce’ Sharp of Amphion Court, Pembroke Dock passed away at Withybush Hospital on February 26. She was 87.

Originally from Pembroke she left school at 14, and started in Gwylums Grocer Shop, passed her civil service exam and went to London, then the telephone exchange as a telephonist, David Steel Factory, then Park Infants School as a dinner lady and finally at Mark’s Curtain Shop.

She enjoyed knitting, bingo and her family.

She was predeceased by her husband Alec Sharp who passed away in 1993.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Ian and Jenny, Linda and Alan, Julie (son and daughter); Gary, Dean, Sian, Kelly, Paul and Alex (grandchildren); Abby, Sam, Emily Rose (great grandchildren) also stepson William, Daphne and Rachel.

The funeral service was held at St Johns Church followed by interment at Llanion Cemetery and was officiated by Rev Caroline Mansell.

The bearers were Jerold Asparassa, David Asparassa, Gary Sharp, Alex Hurst, Gordie Jones and Alan Mathias.

Mrs M J Longhurst

Formerly of Pembroke Dock

MRS Mona Jane Longhurst, nee Arthur of Lewis Street, Pembroke Dock passed away on March 9 at Withybush Hospital. She was a resident at Bush House Nursing Home and was 88 years old.

As a native of Cresswell Quay she worked in Woolworths in Tenby and then as a conductress for the Silcox Bus Company, work which she enjoyed and suited her gregarious nature. She also worked in Morgan’s the Borough Stores and latterly the Co-op in Gordon Street, Pembroke Dock.

Mona and her twin sister Muriel were born in Cresswell Quay in 1926. She was one of eight children of Tom and Martha Arthur. Mona was always great fun and a good friend to many. She enjoyed an active social life and was interested in all kinds of sport, even playing for Cresselly Ladies Cricket Team just after the War. A popular lady and a devout Christian, Mona rarely missed a Sunday Service at Pisgah Chapel as a child and, when older at Bethany. She was an enthusiastic member of Bethany Choir under the direction of Mr Walter Jones and they even cut a vinyl disc of Handel’s Messiah. Mona enjoyed travelling and visited many parts of the world, including Russia, Israel, Italy and Spain. She was very proud of her children Stewart and Helen, and a loving grandparent to Claire, Marie, Huw and Megan. She would have been delighted to have played an active role in the lives of her great grandchildren Dylan and Iestyn, but unfortunately her illness prevented her from doing so.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Stewart and Janice Longhurst (son and daughterin- law); Helen and Stephen John (daughter and son-inlaw); Claire and Leighton Byrne (granddaughter and husband); Huw and Kellie- Marie John (grandson and wife); Megan John (granddaughter); Dylan Byrne (great grandson); Iestyn John (great grandson); Edie Hughes (sister); Norman and Janet Arthur (brother and sister-in-law); Ann Arthur (sister-in-law); Betty Arthur (sister-in-law) plus numerous nieces and nephews. Mona was pre-deceased by Reg Longhurst (husband) and Marie Longhurst (granddaughter).

The service was held at Pennar Community Church followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn. It was officiated by Reverend Roger Hart and the bearers were Ormond Jones, Huw John, Roger Coole, Stephen John and David Arthur.
