Mr S J Mason

Narberth

MR Stephen John Mason of Crinow, near Narberth passed away at Ty Bryngwyn, Llanelli on March 14. He was 51.

From Narberth, he was a field service engineer working on heavy plant all over the country, his vast knowledge and experience gained him a reputation to be proud of. He obtained his mechanics apprenticeship at Neyland Technical College. Then he was employed initially in earlier years and then went on to be self-employed running his own business.

His interests included tractor pulling and Stephen was British Champion in his class for many years with his Fordson Major ‘Skipper’. Shooting was also a past-time Stephen enjoyed. Rallying was a love of his from an early age and he was the owner of an RS2000. Restoring his Scania 143 was a major achievement which made his family very proud and which took him on his last journey.

Stephen was diagnosed with metastatic pancreatic cancer in January 2014. He responded well to treatment initially but then battled with infection and progressive disease. He fought a courageous battle with great determination that inspired all who knew him. He made his family so very proud of him and all his achievements.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Helen Mason (wife); Christina and Victoria (daughters); Jonny (son-in-law); Jon (Victoria’s boyfriend); Jenny Mason (mother); Valerie (sister); Glwyn and Iris Bevan (father and mother-in-law).

The service was held at St Peter’s Church, Lampeter Velfrey and was officiated by Rev Geoffrey Morris.

The bearers were Kevin Thomas, Graham Francis, Peter Thomas, John Phillips, Zak Spolten and Haydn James.

Donations to the Amberden Foundation and Ty Bryngwyn Hospice, Llanelli c/o E C Thomas and Son, Llanteg, Narberth, who carried out the funeral arrangements.

 

Mr W A Jones

Milford Haven

WILLIAM Allan Jones known as Bill of Steynton Road, Milford Haven passed away peacefully, following a short illness, on March 18 at Withybush Hospital with his daughters present.

His wife Glenys to whom he was devoted predeceased him five years ago.

A kind and loving man, he will be missed by many.

Bill grew up in Prescelly Place, Milford Haven, one of eight brothers and sisters.

On leaving school he had several jobs including working for the Conservancy Board, Ind Coope, JE Lawrence and finally at Gulf Oil where he stayed until his retirement.

He undertook National Service in Singapore and often spoke of his time at the RAF bases there.

Family and friends were very important to Bill, he would go out of his way to help anyone, in any way he could.

In August he joined protesters at the Senedd who were protesting against the cuts being made to Withybush Hospital.

Despite suffering pain from arthritis he marched with banner in one hand and walking stick in the other.

He cared and we will remember him for that and for his kindness.

Bill had many interests but his main hobby was his involvement with Milford Haven Bowling Club, this was something he was able to share with his wife, Glenys for a number of years.

Not one to stay on the sidelines, he held many positions during his time there, including Treasurer and Secretary.

He felt honoured to be part of the County Team and also a member of the Barbarians.

He also trained as a coach and worked with Disabled Bowlers, in recognition of this he was given a Civic Award by the Mayor of Milford Haven.

The funeral was held on March 30 at North Road Baptist Church.

Cremation at Parc Gwyn followed and Bills ashes were interred with his wife Glenys at Thornton Cemetery.

Milford Haven Bowling Club provided bearers and a guard of honour, members of the church congregation also stood as guard of honour on leaving the church.

The officiating Minister was Margaret Price who gave a touching account of Bill’s life.

A moving tribute was also given by Robert Stow (grandson).

The church was full to capacity with church members, representatives from the County Bowling Association, The Barbarians, Gulf Oil and Milford Haven Day Centre among the mourners.

The principal mourners were Janet and Edward (daughter and son-in-law); Sharon and George (daughter and son-in-law); Robert and Sheryl (grandson and wife); Marc and Beth (grandson and wife); Anna and Xen (granddaughter and fiancé); James (grandson); Freddie and Eva (great grandchildren); Glenys (sister); Margaret (sister); Ruth and David (sister and brother-in-law); David and Bobbie (brother and sister-in-law); Lena (sister- in-law); Jean and Derek (sister-in-law and brother-inlaw) plus nieces and nephews too numerous to mention.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons of Milford Haven, Frank Newing having been a life-long friend of Bill.

Following the funeral refreshments were served by the ladies of Milford Haven Bowling Club at the clubhouse.

 

Mrs P Harries

Fishguard

The death occurred at Withybush Hospital on March 11 of Peggy Harries, Kensington Street, Fishguard, widow of the late Emlyn.

The funeral took place on March 26 at the Chapel of Rest, Fishguard followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn Crematorium.

The Rev Geoffrey Eynon officiated and was assisted at the Chapel of Rest by the Rev John Roberts.

The bearers were Arthur Aylward, Gareth Howells, Gerwyn Howells and Richard Thomas.

The principal mourners were David and Rosalyn (son and daughter-in-law); Geraint and Holly (grandson and partner); Rhodri and Nadine (grandson and wife) plus nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.

There were family flowers only with donations in lieu to Fishguard Health Centre being received by Paul Jenkins and Sons, Feidr Castell, Fishguard who also carried out the funeral arrangements Mrs C Curtis Llangwm Mrs Cynthia Curtis (nee Cole) passed away peacefully at Withybush General Hospital, on March 25, aged 76.

She was the second of four children to Leslie and Sarah Jane Cole of Millin. She attended the Rhos School and became a member at Millin Cross Chapel when she was just 13 years old. Following her years at Tasker’s School for Girls, she became a secretary for Bert Roberts at Green Bower Garage, Slebech.

Cynthia married Lloyd in 1963 and they shared a long and happy marriage blessed with three children.

When the family moved to Llangwm, she became a faithful member of the Methodist Chapel and the Womens’ Fellowship. She actively supported at any occasion, always quietly contributing behind the scenes. Her love of music and enjoyment of playing hymns enabled her to play the organ at occasional services, even though she was unable to read music.

She was immensely proud of her six grandchildren and three great grandchildren, and her love of her family and many friends contributed to her happiness throughout her life.

The family left to mourn are Lloyd Curtis (husband); Linda and Ian (daughter and son-in-law); Christopher and Lynda (son and daughter-inlaw); Amanda and Adrian (daughter and son-in-law); her beloved grandchildren Michael and Kayleigh, Lucy and Martyn, Natalie and Ian, Andrew, Jasmine, Phoebe and great grandchildren Isabelle, Tomos and Abigale; Mary Lewis (sister); Terence and Philomena (brother and sister-in-law) together with nephews, nieces, cousins and other family members too numerous to mention.

A service was held at Llangwm Methodist Church and followed with the burial at Millin Cross Chapel. Rev Hugh-John Wilson, Rev Jonathan Kirk and Rev Martyn Evans officiated throughout.

The bearers were Andrew Collins, Ian McCaffrey, Martyn Dowding and Steven Lewis.

There were family flowers only with donations for the Wales Air Ambulance c/o Mr Curtis, 38 River View, Llangwm, Haverfordwest, SA62 4JW.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Kevin of Roy Folland and Son, Cartlett, Haverfordwest.

 

Mr J A N Stearn

Llanreath

Mr John Albert Norman Stearn of Orielton Terrace, Llanreath passed away at Withybush Hospital on March 24. He was 77.

Originally from Llandeilo he was a retired general labourer.

He enjoyed fishing and the RAOB.

He was predeceased by Yvonne Stearn.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are his children, his stepchildren and grandchildren.

The service was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium on April 9 and it was officiated by Rev N Skipworth. The bearers were Adam, Steffan, Daniel, Josh and Alan (grandsons).

Donations in lieu of flowers for the Wales Air Ambulance are being received by E C Thomas and Son, Zoar Chapel Funeral Home, Llanteg, Narberth who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

 

Mr D W Boswell

Pembroke Dock

MR Dean Walter Boswell of St Teilo’s Road, Pembroke Dock passed away at home on March 21. He was 36.

Throughout Dean’s working life he has was a labourer including working on many of the refineries.

From a young age Dean was an avid boxer which carried on throughout his teenage years, even though he had stopped boxing, he was still very interested in boxing and was a great fan of Ricky Hatton.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Fluffy (mother); Wayne and Jazz (brother and partner); Michelle and Raymond (sister and brother-in-law); Steven (uncle); John and wife (uncle); Ross, Tilisa, Jade, Lee, Max, Ricky, Shayla, Louie (nieces and nephews); Paige, Deon and Lily (children).

The service was held at St Johns Church followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn Crematorium on April 2. It was officiated by Rev Nicky Skipworth and the bearers were Rob Burton, Marcus Kinsella, Wayne Boswell (brother), Sam Holvey, Lee Waagenes and Adam Brown. Mrs D J Mathias

Martletwy

MRS Dorothy June Mathias of Martletwy, Narberth passed away at Ridegway Nursing Home, Llawhaden on March 11. She was 79.

She was born in Landshipping and brought up in Loveston.

Dorothy married Vincent Mathias in 1956 and moved to Martletwy. They farmed together and also had a milk round delivering green bottle topped milk to the residents of Landshipping. She obtained her ALCM in 1950 and spent 60 years teaching the piano to over 400 pupils, many of whom were at the funeral service.

She was an organist at Bethel Loveston, and then Martletwy following her marriage for over 60 years.

Her main interests were her family and her home.

She attended Martletwy Baptist Church and Sunday school, Lawrenny and Martletwy WI, where she was president for 40 years.

She was predeceased by Vincent James.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Mr and Mrs Stephen and Joyce James (daughter and son-in-law); Mr David Mathias (son); Mr and Mrs Lyn and Sian Mathias (son and daughter-in-law); Mr Jonathon Mathias and Ms Biva Paul (son and partner); Daniel and Nia James, Simon and Mel James, Alice James, James and Charles Mathias, George and Ellie Mathias, Seren Mathias (grandchildren); Lili, Cadi, Joshua and Libbi James (great grandchildren); Mrs Enid Cole and Mrs Ellen Mathias (sisters-in-law); Mr Brinley Mathias (brotherin- law), plus many nephews, nieces and cousins.

The service was held at Martletwy Baptist Church and was officiated by Rev Chris Rees and Rev Alwyn Evans.

The bearers were Daniel and Simon James, Charles and George Mathias (grandsons).

Mr J A May

Staindrop, Co Durham and Pennar, Pembroke Dock

JAMES Augustine May of Staindrop, Co Durham passed away peacefully in Darlington Hospital after a short illness on March 10 at the young age of 37.

A large gathering of family and friends attended his funeral at The Church of St Mary’s in Staindrop on March 19 and then a burial service was held at Llanion Cemetery in Pembroke Dock on March 23, family and friends travelled from near and far to attend both services.

It was James’s wish to be laid to rest near his Dad who passed away in 1989.

James was born in Pembroke Dock the youngest son of Ivor (Delly) and Julia May of Stranraer, Pennar. He attended Pennar Juniors and then Pembroke Comprehensive School before leaving Pembrokeshire and moving up to Co Durham.

He worked as a welder and thoroughly enjoyed his job.

In 2002 at the age of 24, James was involved in a serious car accident which left him a Quadriplegic. This however didn’t stop him from living and many people that knew James would know that he enjoyed life to the full, he had always loved football and followed Liverpool Football Club with great passion.

He also loved breeding Koi Carp and took great pleasure in watching nature at work.

After spending only a few minutes in James’s company you wouldn’t even see his disability, only his sunny personality and lovely heart of gold, he was a true inspiration to everyone who knew him.

He loved his two children Shannah 18 and Bryon 12 very dearly and his passing will leave a big hole in their lives and hearts.

The principal mourners were Shannah, Bryon and Claire, (children and ex-partner); John, Sue, Hannah and Jessie (brother, sister-in-law and nieces); Judith (sister); Tara, Malcolm and Kie-Ryan (niece, partner and great nephew); David, Joy, Teresa, Deborah and Estelle (uncle, auntie and cousins); Des, Cassie, Amy and Lucy (uncle, auntie and cousins).

Unable to attend was Julia (James’s mum).

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Gibson’s, Bishop Auckland and E.C.Thomas and Son, Pembroke Dock and Llanteg.

Mr R Cartwright

Milford Haven

Mr Roy Cartwright of Palace Court, Milford Haven passed away at Withybush Hospital on March 24. He was 80.

Originally from Leintwardine, Herefordshire he joined the Royal Air Force in 1953, aged 18 years, and worked his way up to chief technician. He served in various bases across the UK and abroad, including RAF Aberporthy, RAF High Wycombe and RAF Rheindahlen (Germany) before terminating service in 1975 after 22 years of service.

He worked at Kelvin Hughes in Fleetwood, Blackpool on ship radars and also for a short time in Portadown, Ireland where his father lived as a postman. He was then a postman in Milford Haven and was well known in the area.

His main interests were his family, grandchildren and great grandchildren, fine wine collecting, horse racing , Leintwardine history, Pembrokeshire history and rugby.

He was a keen footballer and cricket player in his younger days and a Wales rugby supporter.

He was also an avid coin collector.

He enjoyed taking part in quizzes.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Marie Cartwright, Cheryl and Dave Loughlin (daughter); Elaine Nicholas (daughter); Beverley and Tim Gardener (daughter); Leia, Kari, Jason, Liam, Emma, Lauren, Adam and Caius (grandchildren); Troy, Reuben, Noah, Caelin, Darcie, Isaac and Albie (great grandchildren); Brian and Rosemary Cartwright (brother and wife); Jayne Cartwright (sister-in-law and wife of Alan, brother, deceased) plus many nieces and nephews from Norwich, Ireland and Scotland.

The funeral service was held at St Katherines Church and was officiated by Father Harri Williams.

The bearers were Jason Cartwright, Liam Mortimer, Adam McMaster and Caius Nicholas (grandsons).

Mrs V A Sanders

Sutton Nr Haverfordwest

MRS Valerie Ann Sanders of Sutton, Haverfordwest passed away peacefully at Withybush Hospital on March 19 after a short illness aged 75.

Born at home in Pembroke Dock in 1940, she was one of three sisters and a brother, and was educated in Pembroke Secondary School.

After leaving school she started work with a local civil engineering firm, whilst working there she met her husband Ken, who was working for Capper Pipe Services on the then new Esso Oil Refinery.

Val and Ken were married in Pembroke on August 15 1964 and shortly after they moved to Cardiff.

A few years later they moved back to Pembrokeshire and made home in Merlins Bridge where they had two sons, Ian and Paul. Whilst living in Merlins Bridge Val worked for Avon and then subsequently for the Conservative Party as a secretary for James Holloway, the local agent working under the local MP and Shadow Secretary of State for Wales, Nicholas Edwards.

James moved away to Monmouth and Val assumed the role of Local Conservative agent for the then Secretary of State Nick Edwards.

Whilst her sons were in Tasker Milward, Val was actively involved with and was secretary for the school PTA for a number of years and then subsequently the Board of Governors.

Nicholas Edwards retired in 1987 and Nicholas Bennett was chosen to stand as the Conservative candidate. He duly won the election with a sizeable majority and Val continued as his agent and continued in her role until 1999.

Val took retirement in 1999 to look after her husband Ken who was undergoing treatment for cancer.

Ken sadly passed away in December 2000.

Val continued to be active in the community and was secretary for Haverfordwest Civic Society, Lambston Residents Association, she sat on Barn Street VC School Board of Governors and was actively involved with various fundraisers for St Martins Church.

A church service was held at St Martins Church on Thursday April 3.

Officiating was Rev Nicholas Cale and the eulogy was read by Nicholas Bennett.

Nicholas Edwards and Stephen Crabb were also in attendance.

The bearers were sons Ian and Paul and nephews Peter and Colin.

The family left to mourn are sons Paul and Ian; sister and brother-in-law June and Bert Force; nephew and nieces Peter Force, Ruth Brown, Julie Meadows and Colin Roderick and granddaughters Dana and Ffion Sanders.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and Sons of Haverfordwest and the family have requested donations in lieu to Paul Sartori C/O Anne Mc- Donald, 17 Jenkins Close, Merlins Bridge, Haverfordwest, SA61 1LH.
