Cllr Mrs J J Westrup

Haverfordwest

JACQUELINE Jeanette Westrup, of Laburnum Grove, Haverfordwest, died aged 70 at Withybush Hospital on May 11.

She was a Councillor and former Mayor of the town and had worked assiduously for the community for many years.

Born in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. It was a lively household as she was the youngest of five children.

Her sister Patricia, niece Susan, brother Tony, nephews David and Wayne travelled from Houston Texas and Buckinghamshire to attend the funeral. Brothers Brian and Roger pre-deceasing Jackie.

Jackie met her husband to be David at the age of 14 when David was taken into the family home following the sad loss of both his parents.

They went on to be married in 1964 when David was 20 and Jackie was 19. It was the beginning of 46 happy years of marriage, until the family had to bear the devastating blow of losing David in 2010.

David’s work as a technical electrician in the Royal Air Force took them away from the family, and Jackie found this hard, particularly when their first child Karen was born in 1968 premature and of low birth weight, they were stationed at RAF Lincoln at the time. Going against medical advice due to the previously complicated pregnancy, Jackie was delighted when Tina was born small but healthy in 1971.

Jackie raised her two girls in their infant years, whilst supporting her husbands career.

Including a tour to Bahrain when Karen was only two years old.

In the late 70s the Westrup family moved to Haverfordwest, following a posting to RAF Brawdy.

Jackie took a position of clerical work with the Hughes family owned Motor Car Garage, Portfield Motors, and later as a carer with social services. A role Jackie received great satisfaction from, and gained many friends. She quickly rose to supervisor level engaging with Multi Agencies in Social Care and Health, and held that position until she was forced to retire in 2009 when she reached 65. Alongside her work Jackie was also instrumental in the lives of her granddaughters Fern, Abigail, Dana, Ffion and little Phoebe. School runs, tea at Nan’s, achievement awards, sports days, sleepovers, but most of all a relaxed home from home, where any problems could be resolved with a cup of tea and a biscuit. This will be sorely missed by them all.

Whatever role Jackie took on she did so with commitment and a great sense of duty, Jackie became involved with the Haverfordwest Town Council in the late 90’s when her husband David joined.

Within three years David became Sheriff with Jackie as his Sheriffs Lady.

2009 saw history made when Jackie also became a councillor forming the only ever husband and wife representatives on the Town Council.

Jackie stood for Deputy Mayor in 2012 leading to her instalment as Mayor the following year, supported by her eldest daughter Karen as Mayoress. Jackie carried out her duties with great determination and dignity despite her health not being good. Substantial amounts were raised to the cause of improving the town and its community through some refreshingly new fund raising events. Jackie was an excellent councillor.

Jackie served on committees outside of the council including the town twinning, Kidney Wales, Prendergast School Governors and was a custody visitor with the Independent Custody Volunteer Scheme.

Girl Guiding was also a huge part of Jackies life, running a Haverfordwest Brownie pack for over 30 years and she was the first Brown Owl to obtain a Campers Licence in Pembrokeshire which led to many fun filled camping experiences.

Her daughter Tina supported her in this role and continues to run a Brownie Pack.

The funeral took place at St Martins Church followed by interment at Lambston Churchyard. Rev Marcus Zipperlen and Cannon Paul Mackness officiated, the church held a large congregation representative of Mayors from other towns, the town council, many friends, neighbours and colleagues from the wide range of organisations with which Jackie was associated.

Canon Mackness read a heartfelt eulogy, and Mrs Kathy Gunner read a tribute to Jackie’s Girl Guiding role.

The bearers were Mark Brown (son-in-law); David Pope and Wayne Smith (nephews) and Mark Wright (RAF friend).

The principal mourners are Karen Brown and Tina Sanders (daughters); Mark Brown and Paul Sanders (sons-inlaw); Patricia Shaw, Anthony Smith (sister and brother); Fern, Abigail and Phoebe Brown, Dana and Ffion Sanders (granddaughters).

The funeral arrangements were carried out by F G Rees and Sons, of Portfield Gate.

Mrs J Hurton

Lamphey

Joan Hurton of Westhill, Lamphey passed away suddenly but peacefully at Withybush Hospital on May 4. She was 88.

She was a very much loved mother to Denise, Ceri and Jeff, mother-in-law to Yvonne and Richard. Also she was an adored Nannie to her eight grandchildren and a lovely Nannie Gi to her 13 greatgrandchildren.

Joan was born on Christmas Eve 1926 in Ferndale, Rhondda where she attended Duffryn Primary and Ferndale Grammar schools. Her first job on leaving school was a cinema projectionist.

This was temporary, however because her ambition was to follow the noble profession of nursing. Her training took place at Bridgend General Hospital where her claim to fame was that she nursed a famous German General.

On New Years Day 1947 she married Godfrey (Goff) at Trehondda Chapel in Ferndale and she became a full time mum to her three children.

The family moved to Newport, Gwent in 1960 when Goff became a power station employee.

She resumed her nursing career at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport. This was to last 22 years until her retirement at the age of 62.

At this time, Joan and Goff moved to Lamphey where she enjoyed 25 idyllic years.

Throughout her life she had many interests. Whilst still a young woman she belonged to a gymnastic group, performing displays at many venues including Wembley Stadium.

In her retirement she followed more passive pursuits as a member of Lamphey WI and Pembroke Gardening Club. She was also quite an accomplished artist.

Joan was devoted to all her family and had many ‘Nannie Wisdoms’ to pass on. She was at the heart of her family and they were the centre of her universe.

The funeral service was held at St Faiths Church, Lamphey, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn. Canon Reverand Roger Jones officiated at the service and Roy Folland and Son carried out the funeral arrangements.
