Mrs N E Philipps

Milford Haven

NORA Eireen Philipps (nee Jones) of Eastleigh Drive, Milford Haven, passed away at Ashdale Care Home, Pembroke, on July 17.

She was 90 years old, and had lived at the Care Home since the beginning of March this year.

Born and raised in Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire, Nora settled in Milford Haven in 1947.

A full-time wife and mother, she undertook voluntary work, establishing and organising the tea bar in Withybush Hospital, and raising much money for the Hospital itself.

Nora’s main interests were the Ladies Committee of Milford Haven Rugby Club (1960s), reading, knitting, needlework, most sports, especially Welsh rugby and cricket, and Welsh male voice choirs. She made trips to the Royal Albert Hall to support singers from Pembrokeshire.

Nora went to St Katherine’s Church, though she attended less frequently in later years.

Pre-deceased by her husband Jack Philipps, former senior chemistry master and then deputy headmaster of Milford Haven Grammar School, Nora is mourned by her sons, Huw (and his partner, Bettina) and Alan (and his wife, Valerie); her grandchildren, Sian, David (and his wife, Hannah), Edward (and his wife Catherine), Owen (and his wife, Maria), Euan and Gemma (and her husband Shaun); and her great-grandchildren, Frankie and Rhys.

The funeral took place at Parc Gwyn on July 24. Canon John Davies officiated.

The bearers were David Philipps, Edward Philipps, Euan Phillipps and Shaun Perrin.

The principal mourners were joined by neighbours and friends John, Hailey, Lisa and Sophie.

Donations in lieu of flowers are to the charity of one’s own choice.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons Ltd, of Milford Haven.

Jacob Williams

Haverfordwest

A large number of people gathered in St Caradoc’s Church, Lawrenny on June 23 to celebrate the life of Jacob Freddie Williams.

Since being born prematurely last November Jacob spent long periods of time in Singleton Hospital’s Neonatal Unit, Glangwili Hospital’s Special Care Baby Unit and Children’s Ward and, most recently, The Children’s Hospital for Wales’ Paediatric Critical Care Unit, where he sadly passed away aged seven months.

All who met Jacob could see that he exuded character and personality. Cheeky smiles, sideways glances, curling of the lip or ‘upside down smile’ were a few of the expressions you may have encountered when approaching him, depending upon the intention of your visit and whether any intervention was planned.

Never a moment still, wriggling, waving his arms, kicking his legs and ‘babbling’, were signs of his remarkable endurance and energy.

Jacob’s strength, determination, energy and bravery were admirable, whilst developing into a happy little boy who enjoyed being around people, toys and TV.

Jacob touched the hearts of many throughout his journey including nurses, doctors and other parents. Those family and friends who spent time with him will have quickly seen his magnetic personality shining through. His little footprints left a big mark wherever he had been. This was reflected in the large number of people who attended his funeral.

The service was conducted by Rev Nick Cale with Mrs Olga Adams playing the organ. The bearers were Anthony Evans and David Cole.

The principal mourners were Richard and Janice (parents); Judith and John Williams, John Cole (grandparents); David and Joanne, Kate and Adrian (uncles and aunties); Rebecca, Alice, Daniel and Hannah (cousins).

Donations, in lieu of flowers, for the Jacob Williams Memorial Fund may be sent to Mr David Cole, Waisland Cottage, Martletwy, Narberth, SA67 8AS.

The money raised will be used by Richard and Janice to buy things to directly benefit babies, children or parents in the units where Jacob received such excellent care. It is hoped that this legacy will continue in Jacob’s name.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Shane Morgan of Tom Newing and Sons, Milford Haven.
