Johnston

MR Ken Read of Bulford Road, Johnston passed away at Withybush Hospital on September 18. He was 80.

Originally from Nottingham, England but born in Shanghai, China. He joined the Royal Navy stationed at Brawdy as an Instrument Technician Supervisor in 1952 and Malta for seven years. He then worked at the Esso Oil Refinery for eight years before moving to Gulf Oil Refinery in 1968 where he retired when it became Chevron and closed down in 1997.

Before retirement he was an Instrument Technician at Chevron Oil Refinery in Waterston, Milford Haven.

His main interests were cricket - Esso Club 1st XI during the 60’s, golf – Milford Haven Golf Club during 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, club captain 1982.

He enjoyed the company of his two grandsons Joel and Marcus and took a keen interest in their sporting activities.

He was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth Olwen Read.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Anthony William Read and Steven Mark Read (sons); Celia and Gail Read (daughters- in-law); Joel and Marcus Read (grandsons); Iris Read (sister-in-law); Lorraine, Michael and Gary (niece and nephews, Australia); Clive Potter, David Harries and Jenny Harries (brothers-inlaw and sister-in-law).

The service was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth and the bearers were Joel and Marcus Read (grandsons); Ian Ace and John Davies (close friends).

Donations in lieu of flowers for The Paul Sartori Foundation, 31 Haven Road, Haverfordwest.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons Ltd, of Milford Haven.

 

Mr H Brown

Pembroke Dock

MR Hilton Brown passed away on September 9 at South Pembs Hospital, Pembroke Dock. He was 79.

He was born, lived and worked in Main Street, Pembroke.

Upon leaving school he became involved in the family business. There was an intervention of three years when he was called up for National Service and joined The Royal Air Force.

In 1957 after his discharge from the services, he returned to the family business.

He met Glenys during that year and they married in 1959, when they took over the running of the restaurant and expanded to Meyrick Street, Pembroke Dock and also the Coffee Tavern in the St Govans Centre. Also in 1964 Hilton opened Le Petit Hairdressing Salon in Main Street, Pembroke managed by his sister-in- law Brenda.

At this stage he employed in the region of 40 members of staff.

He was a founder member of Pembroke Round Table, later becoming a Rotarian, as well as being a very active free mason. In later years he became president of the local St John Ambulance movement as well as holding the post of president of Pembroke Rotary Club. It was in 2002 at the age of 67 years that Hilton was diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease. It was a bitter blow but it was an illness that he fought with courage and humour.

He was overjoyed when his mother Connie Brown was awarded the MBE in 2006.

The family left to mourn are Glenys (wife); Steve and Sally (son and daughter-inlaw); Sandra and Carl (daughter and son-in-law); Megan, Gareth, Tom and Joe (grandchildren); Brenda and Harry (sister-in-law and brother-inlaw); Julian, Clare and Sarah (nephew and nieces); Robert, Lindy, Malcolm, Caroline, Mark, Jon and David (cousins); along with other family members and friends too numerous to mention.

There was a large attendance at the service which was held at St Marys Church, Pembroke and cremation at Parc Gwyn Crematorium. It was officiated by Rev Roger Jones.

The bearers were Steve (son); Gareth, Tom and Joe (grandsons); Carl (son-inlaw) and Julian (nephew).

His granddaughter Megan read a poem called ‘Come with me’.

The eulogy was read by brother-in-law Harry Rees and the lesson was given by Mike Bradney (friend).

Hilton was a beloved son, devoted husband and an affectionate father, father-inlaw, grandfather, a special uncle and a good friend.

He is now at peace and his memory is our keepsake from which we will never part. He was a true gentleman who will be sadly missed.

Donations if desired to the Sunderland Ward South Pembs Hospital may be sent to John Roberts and Son, Funeral Directors, 51 Bush Street, Pembroke Dock who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

 

Mr M Jones

Fishguard

THE funeral service took place on September 19 at The Chapel of Rest, Fishguard of the late Mrs Mair Jones, who passed away peacefully on September 11 at Withybush Hospital.

She was the wife of the late Eric.

Mair was brought up in Pencaer before moving to Goodwick and in later life moved to Fishguard.

Mair loved to spend time with family and friends, reliving past and present times.

Mair celebrated her 90th birthday in March this year with her numerous family, friends and neighbours.

The funeral service was officiated by Rev Terry Broadhurst, assisted by Rev Dr Jenny Annis and Rev Alwyn Daniels, also present was Rev John Roberts. The organist was Mrs Valerie Llewhelin.

The principal mourners were Suzanne and Dilwyn, Carolyn and David (daughters and sons-in-law); Robert and Samantha (grandson and wife); Richard (grandson); Miranda and Ian (grandaughter and husband); Martyn and Danielle (grandson and wife); Nia and James (grandaughter and husband), also her 11 great grandchildren, Glyn and Lily (brother and sister-in-law); Eirwen (sisterin- law) plus nephews, nieces and cousins too numerous to mention.

The bearers were Mair’s three grandsons, two grandsons- in-law and Mr Anthony Griffiths (friend and neighbour).

There were family flowers only with donations for ‘Cancer Research Wales’ being received by Paul Jenkins and Sons Funeral Directors, Fishguard, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

 

Mr D T G Daye

Lampeter Velfrey

THE death occurred peacefully at his home on September 2 of Mr Desmond Thomas George Daye, affectionately known as ‘Des’, aged 84, of Lampeter Velfrey, Narberth.

Des was born at Penfford near Llawhaden on June 22 1931. He made his home with his beloved wife Monica after their marriage on October 5 1957 in Ty Gwyn, near Lampeter Velfrey and farmed until their retirement in 1992.

They moved from there in 2001 to Ashfield. They both enjoyed the village community with their many friends and neighbours. They also became fundraisers for the restoration of the village hall.

He loved gardening and working on their small holding.

Des was happiest in his wellies, tending the animals or solving a mechanical problem with his growing collection of farm machinery.

Everyone pulled together at haymaking time and he could often be found mowing or baling hay for neighbours as well as his own. He attended the village market on the first Saturday of the month, in the village hall, catching up with friends over a sizzling bacon roll.

Predeceased by his wife, Monica in March 2009, the family left to mourn are Ann and Tony, Wendy and Tony, Carol and Paul, Gareth, Geoffrey and Roz, Brenda and Huw, Maureen and John, Robert, Peter, Eileen, Val and Glyn, Chris and Max, Chris and Andrew, Keith, Susan and Andrew, Debbie (nieces, nephews and partners); Aimee and Morgan, Allys, Laura, Matthew and Rebecca (great nieces, nephews and partners); Mervyn, Anthony (cousins) and Moira (cousinin- law).

Unable to attend the funeral were Andrew, Catherine, Victoria, Sarah, Diana, Dafydd, Owen, Morgan, Lucy, Daniel, Harry and Zach (great nieces and nephews).

There were many family, friends and neighbours too numerous to mention.

The family service took place in Ashfield followed by a service at Parc Gwyn, Narberth. Officiating was Chancellor Geoffrey Morris who also delivered a fitting tribute to Des.

The bearers were Gareth, Geoffrey, Robert and Peter (nephews).

Donations to Wales Air Ambulance and Narberth Health Centre c/o E C Thomas and son, Zoar Chapel Funeral Home, Llanteg, Narberth, who carried out the funeral arrangements with their usual caring professionalism.

 

Mrs M Bullock

Formerly of Milford Haven

MRS Monica Bullock passed away peacefully at Steppinghill Hospital in Stockport on Monday, September 28.

Monica was born in 1922 and grew up in Milford Haven and Broad Haven.

Her mother Gwen Nortier (nee Horan) was one of 12 children born to James and Ellen (nee James) Horan of Gellyswick.

She lived most of her life in Cheadle, Cheshire, where her mother and one of her aunts were employed by Sir Alan Sykes.

She had no children and her four younger siblings all passed away before her.

Monica will be cremated in Stockport and her ashes brought to Milford Haven where she will be reunited with her family.
