Milford Haven

MR George William Roach of Mount Estate, Milford Haven passed away at Withybush Hospital on November 3 at the age of 76.

Originally from Sandy Hill, St Ishmaels, George served in the Royal Navy, worked on the construction of Sizewell Nuclear Power Station, and worked with the Westminster Dredging Company.

He spent some of his working life working for various companies on Milford Dock, worked at Esso and Elf and he undertook various other site work. He joined Milford Haven Conservancy Board now known as Milford Haven Port Authority, from which he had early retirement due to ill health.

He was popular character throughout his life, always having a story to tell, and often kept his family entertained in telling them stories from years gone by, whether it was from his childhood memories or stories his dad had passed down to him.

George worked all over the UK and it was when he was on the construction of Sizewell Nuclear Power Station that he met his wife to be Rose. Once married they made their home in Milford.

In the late 1970s, they moved into Willow End, Mount Estate.

During the time at Willow End, people from the estate would go to George’s Shed and voice their concerns regarding the issues on the estate, it was from here the Mount Community Association (MCA) was born, with the late Joyce Walters. So keen was George to help others with issues from housing to financial, he went on various courses to help him do this. He was nominated for a civic award in 2005, he was humbled when he was invited to Town Hall to be presented with his certificate.

In the latter years, George’s health deteriorated, he left the MCA but still continued to help residents of the Estate when he could. A gentleman who will be greatly missed He was predeceased by his wife Rose in 1999 and his youngest daughter Julie in 2013.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Trudy and John (daughter and son-in-law); Diane and Sandra (daughters); Dean and Christine (son and partner); Johnny and Sarah, Denise and Wayne, Debbie and Wayne, Tracey and John, Louise and Stefan, Johan Camillia, Paul, Nikoli and Isaac (grandchildren and partners); Ayishah-Rose, Aran, Leo, Chloe, Amelia- Anne and baby Scarlet (great grandchildren).

The funeral was held at St Katherines and St Peters Church on November 11 prior to interment at Thornton Cemetery, in Milford Haven.

Donations in lieu of flowers for Help For Heroes and Wales Air Ambulance c/o Barclays Bank, Milford Haven.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons Ltd of Milford Haven.

 

Mr P Harries

Walton East

ON Monday October 26 at Parc Gwyn Crematorium a large gathering of family and friends joined together for a service of celebration and thanksgiving for the life of Phil Harries, who passed away Sunday October 18, surround by his family. The service was officiated by Rev Shirley Rayner, organist Mr Seimon Morris and soloist Miss Pippa Williams.

The bearers were Mark Harries (nephew), Dai Llewellin (friend), Tom Bevan and Simon James (Clarbeston Road AFC).

There were representatives from the farming community, Pembrokeshire Football League, Welsh Football Trust and Referees Society.

Clarbeston Road AFC members formed a Guard of Honour.

The family left to mourn and June (wife); Steven and Ali (son and partner); Tigger and Cally (son and daughterin- law); Carys, Ellen, Ben, Harry and Amy (grandchildren); Mary and John Hursey (sister and brother-in-law); Nipper and Betty (brother and sister-in-law); Cynthia and David Jennings (sister and brother-in-law); Jean Cooke (sister-in-law) plus nieces, nephews and cousins.

Unable to attend were Helen and Pete Sheehy (niece and husband, Australia).

Phil’s love was farming, which included the ‘Harries Eggs’ retail business, he enjoyed chatting to their many customers. His grandchildren brought him great joy, he loved taking them to London to the theatre and sightseeing. He had run the line for Clarbeston Road AFC for over 30 years and the club played a big part in his life.

Pippa Williams sang ‘Bring Him Home’ from Les Miserables.

Steve Brown (Chairman Clarbeston Road AFC) read the eulogy. John Rowlands (friend) read the reading, Kay Lewis (niece) read a short poem before the congregation departed to the ‘Match of the Day’ theme tune.

There were family flowers only, but donations for the Paul Sartori Foundation may be sent to Mr Huw Bevan, ‘Glenroy’, Clarbeston Road SA63 4UN.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and Sons, of Haverfordwest.

 

Mr P Johnson

Hakin

MR Peter Johnson of St Anne’s, Hakin, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on October 4. He was 68.

Pete was born and brought up in Milford Haven.

He was the only son of John and Dorothy Johnson, with two sisters Penny Lloyd Jones now living in Australia, and Sue Kenny of Hakin.

After school, Pete began Agricultural Engineering but had to change direction due to the onset of epilepsy.

He started working at Milford Haven Travel Agency, which he subsequently took over from Austin Davies in 1983 and ran successfully until the onset of Parkinsons Disease forced him to retire in 2006.

Pete married Anne in 1976 and they settled in Hakin, where their two sons Mark and Richard were born and brought up. The family moved back to St Anne’s after Pete’s father died, to care for his mother Dorothy.

Pete had been a member of Milford Haven Round Table, Old Priory Lodge, Milford Haven Rotary Club, 41 Club as well as a longstanding member of Pembrokeshire Yacht Club from where he both sailed and ran the safety boat for many years. Apart from his family, Pete’s greatest love was for his motor boat and was a familiar sight on the harbour during the summer, taking groups of friends to Thorne Island or enjoying family barbecues at Great Castle Head.

Latterly, Pete was a member of the Pembrokeshire Branch of Parkinson’s UK and attended their weekly meetings at the Hope Centre, where he found much support and friendship, coping with his problems with fortitude and retaining his wellknown sense of humour.

The high regard in which Pete was held was shown by the very large attendance at a service to celebrate his life, which was held at St Katharine and St Peter’s Church on October 14. The private family cremation having taken place on October 8.

The service was officiated by Father Harri Williams and the eulogy given by Roger Howells, Pete’s cousin and lifelong friend.

Left to mourn are Anne, Mark and Vicky, Richard and Rhian; grandchildren Morgan, Robert, Simon and Oscar, sisters Penny and Sue and their families, and brother- in-law William and family.

Mr N Lavis

Fishguard

MR Norman Lavis passed away peacefully on October 31 at home.

He was 83.

In 1964 he married Ivy and moved from Barnlake Farm, where he had worked with his parents and brother, to Bronmor, Strumble Head where he became a dedicated beekeeper.

In 1970, he was appointed beekeeping inspector for Pembrokeshire.

He also did auxiliary duties at the Strumble Coastguard Station.

Later he joined Liverpool Victoria Insurance Co. in Cardigan and worked there until he retired due to ill health age 62.

The funeral was held at the Chapel of Rest, Fishguard and was followed by interment at Harmony, Pencaer.

The service was officiated by the Rev Geraint Morse and assisted by Rev John Roberts.

A tribute was given by Elaine Harris (daughter).

The organist was Valerie Llewhelin.

The bearers were Ian Lavis, Russell Lavis, Michael Delaney and Raymond Llewhelin.

The family left to mourn are Ivy (wife); Yvonne, Elaine and Annette (daughters); Hywel (brother) and Eileen (sister); Oliver, Anwen and Ella Phillips, Osian and Emyr Harris (grandchildren); Tomos and Chris (sons-in-law) as well as many nephews, nieces and cousins too numerous to mention.

There were family flowers only with donations if desired for Fishguard District Nurses Fund c/o Paul Jenkins and Sons Funeral Directors, Feidr Castell, Fishguard, SA65 9BB, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

 

Mr D J Thomas

Kilgetty

MR David John Thomas of Station Road, Kilgetty passed away on September 30 at his home.

He was 72.

David was born in Penrhiw, Kilgetty in 1943, and he attended Stepaside C P School then Narberth Grammar School.

David went on to serve his apprenticeship in the Co-op butchery department prior to becoming manager there.

He then bought Bridge Stores in Kilgetty, which he ran successfully with his wife Ann for 42 years.

He was always fondly known as ‘Dai the Butch’.

He retired six years ago.

His main interests were football, rugby, golf and ROAB Club.

The family left to mourn are Ann Julie Thomas (wife); John (son); Julie (daughter); Ron (son-in-law); Emily, Lowri, Thomas and Honor (grandchildren); Violet and Peggy (sisters); Peter (brother and Audrey (sister-in-law); John, Phillip, Kevin, William, Steven (nephews), plus their families and many families friends and neighbours too numerous to mention.

The service was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium on October 17 and was officiated by Father Owen McGreal.

The bearers were Alan Holt, Tony Ormond, John Dougmor, Clive Thomas, Micky Marsh, Mike Carpenter.
