Mr R Perkins

He was 88 years old.

There was a large attendance at the church service, officiated by Rev Marina Evans.

Roland was born in North Street and spent most of his life there. He attended Pennar and then the Coronation School before entering Elsdon’s Garage as an apprentice.

He joined the army as a regular soldier in the REME in 1945 and was involved in the Berlin Airlift when attached to the Military Police.

Roland married Catherine (Kitty) Prout in 1950 and their son Roland was born in 1952 and Michael in 1954.

Roland left the army on the birth of his first son and worked in the workshops at Llanion and Manorbier camps. He went to work for Parsons at Pembroke Power station and stayed working there until his retirement in 1992.

Roland and Kitty spent their retirement happily together, enjoying holidays and the company of family and their many friends. He greatly valued this companionship after Kitty passed away in 2006.

Mr V Speranza

Begelly

AS reported previously, the sudden, but peaceful death of Mr Vincenzo ‘Enzo’ Speranza of Begelly occurred on November 18 at his home in Begelly, aged 81.

He was predeceased by his parents Concetta and Pasquale and was one of seven children, three boys and four girls.

The funeral was held on December 3 at St Mary’s Church, Begelly and was officiated by Father Paul Davies.

Enzo was later interred in the Church Cemetery.

Enzo was born in Naples, Italy in 1934.

He was a child of the war and as a result of the schools and buildings being bombed by the Germans, Enzo left school and went to work at nine years of age.

He followed in his father’s footsteps into the great Glass Houses of Naples and did shift work from that tender age amidst the horror of war and falling bombs, his home for long periods was an air raid shelter.

Enzo left Italy at 20 years of age and worked in all the major Glass factories in many European countries such as Sweden, Germany, France, Switzerland and Israel, developing his glassmaking skills, before moving to King’s Lynn in 1970 when the UK became his permanent home.

He worked for Wedgwood/ Caithness Glass and with his wife Wendy, they both had this desire to set up their own glass making business.

They searched the length and breadth of the UK for a suitable property before stumbling across Avondale whilst on holiday in Saundersfoot in 1974.

They moved to Kilgetty in 1975 and Avondale Glass was proudly opened in Easter 1976.

Enzo was a Master Glass Blower and was a shining example as a craftsman who was always absolutely meticulous and he was the ultimate perfectionist with his work and with his expectations, the like of which is very rare.

He always set high standards and demanded quality at all times with his work and the results of his skill in producing wonderful glass creations are adorning the mantelpieces and cabinets of many homes the world over.

After Enzo’s retirement in 2009, he was able to dedicate his time and his hands to his home in Begelly and especially his garden where he took enormous pride and personal satisfaction. He spent many hours of contentment here and particularly enjoyed inviting all his family round to enjoy fish and chips in his garden during the summer days.

Enzo was always buying new plants and garden ornaments as, although to any onlookers his garden was immaculate, to Enzo, it could always be bettered. That demand for perfection stayed with Enzo until the end.

It was mostly during his retirement years that he forged many friendships and was able to properly enjoy the company and love of his family all around him. His great love was swimming and diving and he loved taking the kids swimming in the sea in the summer time. Indeed it was this diving prowess that enabled Enzo, whilst in his teens to save a friend from drowning whilst diving in the Bay of Naples when he got into serious difficulty.

However, it’s through dancing that many of his friends really came to know Enzo, with his love of Modern Ballroom, Waltzes, Modern Sequence and Rock ‘n’ Roll Dancing. Again, he had high standards and expected the same of his dance partners.

Enzo will be greatly missed by all his family, friends and dance companions.

The family left to mourn are grandchildren Laura, Bobby and wife, Clare, Angelina and husband, Mathew, Paul and wife, Melissa and Jason, great grandchildren Orlando, Leoni, Maci and Faith, stepchildren Steve and Linda (wife) and Ann and Bruce (husband), Wendy and John, partner Pauline and his brothers and sisters and many nieces and nephews in Italy.

Donations in memory for Royal National Institute for the Blind (R.N.I.B) may be sent c/o E.C. Thomas and Son, Funeral Directors, Zoar Chapel Funeral Home, Llanteg, Narberth SA67 8QH who carried out the funeral arrangements.
