Mr R T Jones

Johnston

MR Robert Thomas Jones of Glebelands, Johnston passed away in hospital after a week on the ICU on January 4. He was 79.

Originally from Mountain Ash, after the war he moved to Haverfordwest to the Drill Hall in 1954. His father Dai Jones ran the British Legion and Conservative Club in Milford and then the Lower Three Crowns and the Bridgend in Haverfordwest.

He married Doris Jones (nee John) in 1958.

During his working life he was a painter and decorator but retired due to ill health in 1981.

His interests included reading, writing, drawing, crosswords and TV. He was a founder of Withybush Pain and Support Group for 18 years.

He was predeceased by Doris in 2015.

The family left to mourn are Gaynor and Gary (daughter and partner); Shawn and Karen (son and partner); Sharon (daughter); Jane and Chris (daughter and sonin- law); Lee and Suzannah, Kirsty and Kris, Scott, Hannah, Andrew, Nikki, Sophie, Amy and Ellie, and Korben (grandchildren); Brandon, Ethan and Zak (great grandchildren); David and Carol (brother and sister-in-law).

The funeral service was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth and was officiated by Father Jeffrey Gwyther.

The bearers were Shawn Jones (son); Lee Roberts (grandson); Scott Murray (grandson); Hannah Jones (granddaughter); Andrew Murray (grandson); Amy Rees (granddaughter). Kirsty Roberts (granddaughter) read a poem.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Andrew Rees of Portfield Gate.

 

Mrs S V W Nutting

Burton

SHEILA Vivienne Webster Nutting died peacefully at Pembroke Haven Residential Care Home on January 20, in her 88th year.

Sheila was a loving and devoted wife to Dennis, mother to Simon and Jonathan, a cherished grandmother of James, Sarah, Caitlin and great granddaughter Charlotte.

Sheila will be missed by Elizabeth (wife of Simon); Elaine (fiancée of Jonathan); Evelyn (wife of her brother Tony) and her nieces Christine, Valerie, Sheila and nephew Andrew.

Sheila was a dedicated head teacher professionally respected throughout the teaching community and committed to working with infant children and their families throughout a teaching career which lasted 45 years.

She retired in 1999 as Head Teacher at Normanton Woodhouse Infant School, West Yorkshire.

A funeral service was officiated by Reverend Alan Chadwick at St Mary Church, Burton, which included family, friends and members of U3A, Burton WI and Parkinson Society of which she had been president.

Donations can be made to Burton Church, where she was regular parishioner via John Roberts and Son, Funeral Directors, 51 Bush Street, Pembroke Dock, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

 

Mr L V Edwards

Dale

MR Leslie Vaughan Edwards of Dale passed away on November 10 2015 at Rickeston Mill Nursing Home where he had been a resident for two years. He was 96.

Leslie was born in Dale in 1919, the eldest of seven children to Teddy and Lucy Edwards.

He served in the RAF during the Second World War as part of the North Africa Campaign before returning to Dale to continue his National Service at the Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) Kete.

After the closure of Kete he joined the staff of Dale market gardens at Allenbrook before joining the nursing staff at Kensington Hospital, St Brides and then Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest.

He enjoyed gardening, watching snooker and rugby, playing whist and Wednesday Club at Marloes. He was predeceased by his wife Ruth Mary in 1989.

The family left to mourn and principle mourners are Linda and David Ramsey (daughter and son-in-law); Jennifer Davies (daughter); Jonathan, Timothy, Elizabeth Ramsey, Kelly Davies (grandchildren); Lily, Poppy and Betsy (great-grandchildren).

The service was held at St James Church, Dale followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, Narberth. The service was officiated by Fr Andrew Johnson and the bearers were his grandchildren. The eulogy was given by David Ramsey.

There were immediate family flowers only with donations in lieu, if desired, to St James’ Church, Dale to Mrs M Reynolds, Fairfield, Dale, Haverfordwest SA62 3RF.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by FG Rees and Sons, of Portfield Gate, Haverfordwest.

 

Mr D J W Williams

Llanstadwell

Formerly of Liverpool

MR Donald James Walmsley Williams of Hazelbank, Hazelbeach passed away at Ashdale Care Home on January 5. He was 93.

During his working life he was WW2 soldier in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (joined up at 17 at the outbreak of war). Also he trained as an accountant and retired as Company Secretary of Gradwood Engineering, Stockport.

His main interests were his family, St Tudwal’s Church, and he was a founder member of the Neyland Bowls Club and an honorary member.

He was predeceased by Dorothy William (nee Brookfield).

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Jenifer and Harry (daughter and son-in-law); Laura and Dan (granddaughter and sonin- law); Ben and Oliver (great grandchildren); Peter and Helena (grandson and daughter- in-law); William (great grandson).

The service was held at Llanstadwell Parish Church on January 19 and was officiated by Rev A Chadwick and J Hancock. The bearers were Ted Sanders, John Gay, Brian McKay and Peter Darnley.

Mrs M Shaw

Pembroke Dock

MRS Mary Shaw of Hawkstone Road, Pembroke Dock passed away peacefully at Withybush Hospital on January 1.

Mary was the dearly loved wife of the late George and wonderful mother, nanna and great nanna to her four children, nine grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

She had recently celebrated her 100th birthday receiving her birthday card from the Queen and enjoying a wonderful lunch at Lamphey Hall with many of her family.

Mary’s whole life centred around her family.

Born one of eleven children, in Newbridge, Monmouthshire, Mary spent her early life helping her mother to look after her younger brothers and sisters.

After marrying George in 1953 she supported him whilst he was in the Royal Artillery, being stationed in Tidworth, Germany, Manorbier and Larkhill.

She had five children Margery, Joyce, Billy, George and Susan but sadly Billy died when he was just nineteen years old.

When George was stationed in Larkhill, Mary worked for the Civil Service cleaning silver.

After George retired from the army they moved back to Pembrokeshire and became stewards of the RAFA Club in Pembroke Dock, later owning a Fish and Chip in Pennar.

Mary was a very practical person spending many hours knitting, sewing and baking.

She was keen gardener and together with George supplied friends, neighbours and family with vegetables and fruit for many years.

Mary enjoyed and was very skilled in flower arranging often completing flower arrangements for the church.

For many years she was a collector for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

Mary had a strong Christian faith. Brought up attending the Pentecostal Church in Newbridge and on returning to Pembrokeshire she regularly attended the Haven Christian Centre in Pembroke and latterly the Cavalry Church in Haverfordwest.

The family left to mourn are Margery (daughter); Joyce and Peter (daughter and partner); George and Wendy (son and daughter-in-law); Susan and Tim (daughter and sonin- law); Erica, Colin, Moira, Sarah, Louise, Matthew, Natalie, Lindsey and Allison (grandchildren); David, Gareth, Scott, Hannah, Fletcher, Miller, Eden, Caden, Zara and Greyson (great grandchildren).

Officiating at the funeral service on January 11 at the Zion Free Church, Pembroke Dock was the Pastor Adrian Vaughan and Reverend Huw Michael. Personal tributes were given by her son George and granddaughter Natalie.

Her daughter Susan read a poem.

The bearers were Colin Griffiths, Tim Phillips, Sean McCarthy, Matthew Phillips, Marcus Richards and Zac McCarthy.

Mrs Q E Phillips

Clynderwen

FAMILY, friends and neighbours old and new gathered at Berea Chapel, Croesgoch on January 23 for Queenies funeral following her death peacefully at home on January 14.

She was 85.

The service was officiated by the Rev Geraint Morse who also read the eulogy, reading that she was a loyal wife and friend, proud mother, mother- in-law, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a homemaker, a person who enjoyed reading, poetry, music and writing, knitting for her family, cooking, gardening and animals especially cats.

Born in London in 1930 she returned to Pembrokeshire after the war with her mother and stepfather to help them farm at Ffynon Gron, Hayscastle.

Shortly after she met Oli they married in 1951. They would have been married 65 years this April.

They farmed for a short time with Oli’s parents in Treswig, Croesgoch and then in their own right at Lower Druidston Farm, Broad Haven, where they raised their family.

They sold Lower Druidston Farm in 1978, retiring to Troedyrhiw, Rhydwilym.

She enjoyed her holidays to Jersey returning there for over 25 years until ill health made it impractical to go.

Diagnosed with osteoporosis Queenie slowly lost her mobility, breaking her shoulder and then her hip. She was airlifted by air ambulance to hospital on this occasion In the last months of her life she was cared for at home by her family.

The principal mourners in attendance were Mr Oliver Phillips (husband); David and Tania Phillips (son and daughter-in-law); Avril and Mark Perkins (daughter and son-in-law); Hannah and Dan Bond (granddaughter); Adam Phillips and Carys Davies (grandson); Sian Phillips and Ian Thebridge (granddaughter); Elizabeth Bond (great granddaughter); Mr and Mrs James Phillips (nephew).

The organ was played by her daughter Mrs Avril Perkins assisted by Mrs Ann Thomas.

The order of service leaflets were distributed by Mr I Davies and Mr J Edwards (nephews). The bearers were David Phillips, Adam Phillips, Graeme Corbett and Ian Thebridge.

There were family flowers only with donations to the Wales Air Ambulance c/o W J Kenneth Davies, Blaenwern, Clynderwen SA66 7NQ, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.
