Mrs B Morgan

Clynderwen

MRS Betty Morgan passed away very peacefully on January 25 in Withybush Hospital following a short illness.

Born at Gwynfryn, Spring Gardens, Whitland, she was the second child of four children born to John Mark Bennetts and Mary Hannah Bennett. She was educated at Whitland Primary School continuing her further education at Whitland Grammar School, where she excelled in sport activities and was included in school teams for both hockey and tennis.

On leaving school, Betty was employed on the clerical staff of Mr Williams, St Clears, where she remained until her marriage to Mr Emrys Morgan of ‘Preswylfa’ Clynderwen, settling in Heoly- Gaer, Clynderwen. It was not long before the couple decided to start their own business as stationers in the village, commencing at first in a small wooden hut on the approach road to Clynderwen Station, selling newspapers, cigarettes, magazines etc to local commuters. Finally this culminated in their building their own combined shop and home in centre of the village, where they served the community for many years until their retirement.

They moved to their new bungalow in Gower Villa Drive, Clynderwen, naming it ‘Sundown’, where Emrys passed away in 1992 age 72 years, but Betty remained there until just one week before her death in 2016 age 90 years.

The funeral took place on Monday February 1 at St Davids Church, Clynderwen, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, Narberth.

The officiating minister was the Reverend Kingsley Taylor.

There were family flowers only with donations, if desired towards St Davids Church, Clynderwen, c/o Ken Davies and Sons, Funeral Directors, Clynderwen, who also with great sympathy and compassion, carried out all the funeral arrangements.

Mr F J Cloney

Poole

Formerly of Fishguard

THE burial took place on Monday February 8 at Llanwnda Cemetery, Fishguard of Mr Francis (Frank) Joseph Cloney who passed away peacefully in a care home in Branksome Park, Poole, aged 83 years old.

Born in Victoria Avenue in 1932, he attended Fishguard Grammar School and was initially a student teacher at the Roman Catholic School until he entered the RAF Air Sea Rescue where he crewed an MGB-81, 100 class ‘Spitfire of the Sea’ and later a Royal Yacht Squadron converted Minesweeper.

Following his release from National Service he became a local postman for a short while at the request of Mr Burgess the local Postmaster, although his lack of Welsh language necessitated his transfer to Shropshire for his subsequent promotions. He returned to Pembroke Dock and Haverfordwest briefly following the death of his mother Kathleen in 1954, although he remained in touch with many local friends throughout his life.

Frank’s RAF service gave him a lifelong interest in First Aid and he was very active in GPO/British Telecom helping to set up units in Haverfordwest, Shropshire and Cheshire. He trained over 2,000 first aiders and won the UK 1978 GPO/BT Individual Competition at Blackpool against the Lancashire Police and Mine Rescue, and the Midlands Fire Brigade.

He also sailed with the GPO/BT Yacht Club and rallied cars (Riley, Humber and Jaguar) with the Shropshire Motor Club and was particularly proud of his drive with a pre-production Triumph TR2.

He met his wife Ivy in Chester in 1957 when they both worked for the GPO, marrying in 1959 and enjoying 42 years together, living in Shrewsbury and Sale, Manchester.

They moved to Dorset for their retirement and delighted in many long-haul holidays around the world.

Following Ivy’s death in 2002 he enjoyed a number of years of companionship with his partner Barbara, who predeceased him in 2010.

Frank leaves a son Andrew, a daughter Susan and four grandchildren Alexandra, Louise, Aidan and Lauren.

He will be greatly missed.
