Mr W E Powling

Pembroke

Formerly of Tenby

ERIC passed away peacefully at home in Main Street, Pembroke, on April 27, surrounded by his family, aged 81 years.

He leaves behind his wife Ann, dearly loved dad of Jane and partner Mick, Susan and partner Kenny, Jon and Estelle. Grandchildren – Hannah, Sam, Rhys, Olivia, Lauren and Lydia.

Eric was born in 1934, his parents the late Bert and Eileen Powling. He was one of nine children and his early years were spent at lower Salterns, Tenby before the family moved to Newell Hill Tenby in 1937. Some of Eric’s early memories as a child were walking home from the council school on Greenhill and climbing the long steps to Newell Hill with his older brothers John and Roy. Their mother Eileen always had their tea ready which was soon devoured. Eric, like his older brothers had a happy childhood during the war years and they all did their bit for the war effort. They also had great fun playing in the woods around Tenby and on all of the wonderful local beaches.

He was educated at Tenby Council School where the headmaster was Mr Ossie Morgan and then later at Greenhill Grammar School under the headship of Mr Graham Gibbons. Eric enjoyed school and made many friends. He played soccer and rugby for the School. He formed a formidable second row partnership in the school rugby team with his lifelong friend Glyn Rixon and they were a feared combination with other school teams.

Eric loved his time in St Marys church boys choir with his brother Roy and they looked forward to their two shillings choir pay every quarter.

In 1952 Eric was conscripted for national service and served for 3 years in the Royal Engineers in the U.K, Belgium and Germany.

In August 1956 at the time of the Suez crisis he served in the U.K and the Middle East. In February 1957 he joined the Pembrokeshire Police Force.

He served as a Constable at Haverfordwest, Broad Haven, Lydstep, Tenby and Pembroke before being promoted to Sergeant at Pembroke Dock in February 1963.

In March 1969, following the amalgamation of the Pembrokeshire Police Force into the Dyfed Powys Police Force, he was transferred to Carmarthen and lived there for three years with his wife and two daughters.

In December 1972 Eric was promoted to Inspector and transferred to Newtown Powys as deputy Sub Division Commander.

In September 1979 he was promoted to Chief Inspector and took charge of Divisional Administration at Newtown, a post he held until September 1981.

He then returned to Pembrokeshire with his wife, two daughters and their son Jon.

He took up a similar position at Divisional Headquarters in Haverfordwest.

In September 1982 Eric was appointed to command the South Pembrokeshire Sub Division which was formed the previous year when the Pembroke Dock and Tenby Sub Divisions were combined.

Eric retired from the force on completion of 30 years’ service in 1987 which was a Career that he was immensely proud off and he was a role model and support to everyone he worked with.

Upon retirement he was appointed Tenby Town Clerk which was a part time role that prepared him for when he finally retired in September 1989. He had long happy retirement and he spent time going on holiday with his wife and spending time with his family and friends.

Eric Loved Tenby United Rugby Football Club as a player, supporter and committee member, an interest shared by his parents, brothers and sisters.

An active member of the Royal Engineers Association he served as Chairman and treasurer of the Pembroke Dock Branch for many years.

He often travelled to London and Monmouth to attend AGMs and to meet up with fellow members.

Eric was actively involved in the Pembrokeshire Police Officers Association since it’s foundation in 1982. He also served as secretary and for many years as treasurer.

He will be sadly missed by all his family and friends.

The family left to mourn are Roy and Nina, Tony and Diane, Jeffrey and Margaret, Robert and Carol, Denis and Ellen, (brothers and sistersin- law); Sylvia and Philip (sister and brother-in-law); Julie (sister), nephews, nieces and friends too numerous to mention.

Mrs L E Lewis

Formerly of Kilgetty

A LARGE gathering of family and friends attended Bethel Chapel, Loveston on April 13 for the funeral service and burial of Lizzie Edwina Lewis.

Edwina was born in 1926.

She was the eldest of three children born to Jack and Jane Morris. She was born in Bronhaul, Laugharne , St.

Clears. Later moving to Clyn Gwynne Farm, St Clears.

Sadly, both her sister Pat and brother Elfet have predeceased her.

After leaving school at 15 years of age, she worked hard on the farm with her parents, hand-milking the cows and harvesting the crops with a horse and cart.

She did, however remember a very special trip to London with her mother and auntie in 1948 to watch the opening of The Olympic Games when she was 21.

St Clears Fair was also the highlight of the year, this is where she met John Lewis whilst he was home on leave from the Army. He often joked that most people took a goldfish home from the fair, he took Edwina home. It was the start of a very long and happy relationship.

They married in Zion Chapel, St. Clears on April 5 1951.

They lived and continued to work on the farm in Clyn Gwnne with her parents and Elfet. Both their sons Anthony and Michael were born there.

In 1955 they took the big step and bought Captain Style near Narberth. John worked in Highgate for Wilfred and Vera Griffiths. Edwina stayed home and looked after the children and did the afternoon milking on her own as they were milking three times a day. Their daughter Vera was born whilst they lived there.

In April 1964 they moved to Yerbeston Gate to expand their business. Edwina not only helped with the milking twice a day, she was always busy doing the household chores; providing accommodation for holidaymakers, during the summer months; feeding the contractors during harvest time; and rearing poultry for Christmas.

In 1995 they retired from farming and moved to Sycamore Lodge, Cold Blow. They made many friends whilst out walking.

In 2003, they decided to downsize and moved to Swn y Deryn, Kilgetty. They still enjoyed walking and meeting new friends. Sometimes walking 4 miles a day.

After retiring they would keep themselves busy gardening.

Both the vegetable garden and their flower pots and borders were their pride and joy. Making chutneys and pickling onions in the Autumn ready to give as Christmas gifts.

They also enjoyed their many holidays with the local bus companies as well as the famous mystery tours. They enjoyed meeting new friends.

Family was very important to them, there was always a welcome. Their children and grandchildren have many treasured memories of time spent together.

When John died in 2012, Edwina was lost. They used to do everything together. She was a strong-willed person and would do as much for herself as possible.

In September 2014 she fell outside the bungalow and sprained her right wrist and suffered delayed concussion.

After a short stay in Glangwili, she was transferred to Park House Hospital, Tenby to prepare her to go home with the help of carers. She lost her confidence and Park House made the decision that she needed 24 hour care.

In October 2014 she moved into Waungron Mansion Residential Care Home, Whitland. She would say the staff were all very kind and the food was good. The staff used to say she had a good sense of humour and would have some fun with her. After 61 years of marriage to John, she had to have a sense of humour, as he always had something witty to say.

Dementia set in after her fall in September and very soon it affected her co-ordination and was not able to walk very far. Her quality of life deteriorated. She no longer knew her family and friends and was having to have everything done for her.

Family left to mourn are her children, Anthony and Carolyn, Michael and Clare and Vera and Talfan; grandchildren Mark and Nicola, Andrew and Angharad, Dylan. Anna and Ian, Tim and Emma. Llewellyn and Julia, Ryan and Sioned and Gavin. great grandchildren Damien, Amellia, Eveangeline and Isabella-Jane and Elis.

The bearers at Bethel Chapel were Hugh James, Lloyd Morris, Derek Morris. Richard Lewis, Howard Lewis and Paul Lewis (nephews) Officiating Ministers were Rev Alwyn Evans, who gave a very moving tribute to Edwina, he was assisted by Rev Hywel Brown and Rev Guto Llywelyn.
