Mr R P Pullen

Stepaside

THE funeral recently took place of Mr Ron Pullen of Stepaside, who passed away on June 9 aged 92.

Originally from Byfleet in Surrey, Ron was the youngest of six children, but before entering his teens he witnessed the death of an elder sister and then that of his mother.

His father had been awarded the DCM in the Battle of the Somme.

Ron left school before his 14th birthday to join Hawkers Aircraft factory, situated inside the old Brooklands Racing Track. He learnt how to fit guns on Hurricanes and even taxied planes off the runway during a major bombing raid in adjacent Vickers factories. Ron joined the RAF and spent most of his war service in the Middle East, with the Air Sea Rescue. After demob, he returned to Vickers to become a specialised expert in wing spars, a role which took him all over the world.

It was whilst training in the RAF, he met his future wife of 69 years, Joan.

Ron and Joan eventually moved to a small village in North Wales, where he could become more involved with his love of country pursuits and outdoor jobs.

Then 28 years ago, they moved south to Pembrokeshire to be near their son, Tony and family.

Refusing to slow down in retirement, Ron continued his travels and with his nephew, camped, youth-hostelled, and even slept on buses during trips to Scotland, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. They canoed the Mulgrave River in flood with crocodiles and white waterrafted down the Tully River, being in his late seventies, Ron was the oldest man to have done so at that time.

Locally, Ron was heavily involved with the local branch of the Air Crew Association, taking on the role of Welfare Officer in order to fight the cause of remaining crew members, advising their families and liaising with local health trusts. In particular, he campaigned against apparent ageist attitudes in the NHS, a campaign which was extended throughout the ACA nationally, resulting in Ron being awarded a President’s Commendation for his “tireless work as branch Welfare Officer”.

Clay pigeon shooting remained to the end, Ron’s passion and joy, more latterly, in competition with Tony his son. One of his final wishes was to invite everyone to a clay-shoot and BBQ. This will be held at 5.00pm on Sunday 14 August, at the quarry above Nash Farm, Minwear (novices welcome).

Left to mourn are his wife Joan; son Tony; daughterin- law Jo; daughter Chris; son-in-law Peter; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren (soon to be eight), as well as nephews and nieces across the globe.

As a way of showing how grateful all the staff for their care and support, the family wish for donations to purchase and present specialist rehabilitation equipment for The Acute Stroke Unit, Ward 11, Withybush Hospital c/o E.C.Thomas and Son, Funeral Directors, Zoar Chapel Funeral Home, Llanteg, Narberth, SA67 8QH.
