Mrs E M C Thomas

Formerly of Hook

The funeral of Edna May CynthiaThomas took place on September 1 at Mount Zion United Reformed Church, Hook.

Edna recently passed away peacefully at Williamston Care Home, where she had been residing for eighteen months. Edna was 100 years of age, and, just a few months ago, had celebrated her birthday at the care home with a wonderful party attended by family and friends.

Edna originated from Haverfordwest, but had moved away to South East Wales with her family at two years of age as her father was an area manager of a large Insurance Company. She was one of five children, Dorothy, Gwendoline, Harriet and Reginald, although two of her sisters died prematurely in their twenties.

The family settled in Bridgend for many years. During the second World War, Edna served as a Nurse in the WRAFS.

Later Edna also cared for several relatives in Bridgend, including her elderly mother, but she always maintained links with Pembrokeshire, particularly with the son of long-standing family friends in Hook. Harold Thomas was a teacher in Haverfordwest, then later a Headmaster of Camrose North Primary School for many years until retirement, and he was a Deacon and Secretary of Mount Zion URC, Hook. Harold Thomas was also related to the original founders of the Western Telegraph.

Edna and Harold endured a relationship across the miles for twenty years whilst caring for their elderly mothers, until eventually marrying in Haverfordwest in 1975. Edna moved to Hook after marriage, but sadly, two years later, her husband died suddenly.

Edna remained living on her own in Hook for forty years, supported by local family, members of Mount Zion URC, and numerous friends in Hook village. Edna was a very loved and popular member of the community who enjoyed life, such as gardening, baking, and elder-flower wine-making.

She had travelled to various parts of Europe, and Canada, where her remaining birth family members reside. Edna’s failing physical health resulted in her receiving support at home from Pembrokeshire Care for several years, until she was eventually admitted to Williamston Care Home.

Edna was a popular resident, and she was proud to have celebrated her 100th birthday at the home, where she had received numerous cards including one from Her Majesty the Queen, and other eminent Politicians, both locally and nationally, and she was presented with flowers from The Chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council.

Edna was known for her good humour and positive attitude to life, based on her strong Christian faith.

The funeral service was led by Reverend Steve Woods, Minister of Mount Zion URC, followed by burial in Mount Zion ChurchCcemetery. Numerous friends, carers, and family members attended, some of whom had travelled from Cardiff, and Canada.

There were family flowers only, but donations, if desired, may be made payable to Mount Zion URC and sent to Mrs S. Burt, Inglewood, West Hook Road, Hook, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, SA62 4LS.

Funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and Sons, Haverfordwest.

Edna will be greatly missed by her family and numerous friends, as she was a delight to all who knew her.
