Mr Alun Lawrence James

Carnhedryn

Alun died in Withybush Hospital late on Monday, October 17. He’d lived almost all of his 83 years in his bungalow – latterly with the latest of a series of devoted rescue dogs – practising for the last quarter century (since his retirement) the craft he’d learned fashioning coffins with Harry Price, undertaker of Croesgoch, more than 60 years ago.

Unmarried, he was the shyest of men till he got to know you; then he proved to be the staunchest of friends, always ready to lend a hand.

His schooldays in Carnhedryn were coloured very much by the war that, though it brought misery to many, produced so many exciting memories for Alun, memories that he would reach for to entertain his companions. His choice of the RAF in which to do his National Service was a foregone conclusion, and led on to a lifelong passion for aircraft, and ultimately his generosity towards the Air Ambulance Service.

Much of his subsequent career was spent with the PSA, working for many years in Trecwn and Brawdy; and culminating in his award of the Imperial Service Medal. Beset at the end of his life by ill-health, he came to look upon the years after 2009 as a gift from the Oncology Department; and his conversation would readily turn to the fortes and foibles of the medical staff, who he thought of as an extension to his family.

Cremation at Park Gwyn on Tuesday the 25th at 1pm was followed by the interment of his ashes in his parents’ grave in Caerfarchell.
