Narberth

ON February 15 a large attendance of mourners at Parc Gwyn demonstrated the respect and affection for Christopher Mark Richards, one of Pembrokeshire’s top cricket groundsmen.

Chris died suddenly on January 28 at Withybush Hospital with his wife Emma, sons Thomas and Owen and his brother Nigel at his bedside.

Chris was born in Haverfordwest in May 1963, son of the late Mr John and Mrs Jean Richards, his brother Nigel and his sister Denise.

Chris had retired from Dyfed Powys Police after thirty years of service as a detective constable. His time in the force stationed at Llandrindod Wells, Newtown, Tenby and Narberth Stations before taking on the position of detective constable based at Pembroke Dock and Fishguard Port.

On May 9 1987 Chris married his wife Emma and this year would have celebrated thirty years of marriage on Chris’s birthday.

Chris’s love of sport commenced in his early teens playing rugby for Tasker Milward Grammar School and then he went onto captain the Sir Thomas Picton 1st XV he played for Pembrokeshire County, Haverfordwest RFC and Dyfed Powys Rugby Team. In addition he played football for Crundale and Narberth AFC and retired from his playing days at Clarbeston Road AFC.

Cricket was Chris’s passion and he was a stalwart of Narberth Cricket Club for over 30 years. He served firstly as a player, committee member, junior coach, Clubman of the Year and currently was club chairman and groundsman.

Chris had the honour in 2006 to be one of the Man of the Match adjudicators at the Harrison Allen Bowl Final.

Whilst not on the Lewis Lloyd ground, Chris was supporting both his sons either on the football pitch or at the many cricket grounds around West Wales.

Both sons representing Pembrokeshire and Tom West Wales.

Emma and Chris spent many hours together working on the Lewis Lloyd ground or walking their two dogs.

Following the service a ‘high class cricket tea’ held at Narberth Rugby Club who kindly donated this in memory of Chris also during the S4C – televised Narberth and Carmarthen rugby games a minutes silence was held in his honour.

Officiating at the service was Rev Marcus Zipperlen.

The bearers were Ben Hughes, Ashley Williams, Ben and Kyle Quartermaine representing NCC and nephews Jonathan and Steven Richards. Others participating were a eulogy read by Mr Nigel Richards (brother), a tribute to the life of Chris by his son Owen; a bible reading by Mr H Simpkins (NCC); a poem Mr Gareth Evans (Dyfed Powys Police) and then former colleagues of the Police force formed a guard of honour at Parc Gwyn.

Saundersfoot

MR John Williams passed away peacefully on February 14 at South Pembs Hospital, Pembroke Dock aged 88.

John was born in 1928 to Elizabeth and Edward Williams in The Old School House, Efailwen and was brought up with his brothers Tom and Ben in Temple Druid and the The Swan, Maenclochog.

As a pupil John attended Maenclochog Primary School and then Narberth Grammar School where he successfully completed his education in 1946. In the same year he served his national service in the Royal Navy and achieved an honourable service award as a Telegraphist. After completing his national service he was accepted to study in Trinity College, Carmarthen to commence a three year teachers course in Mathematics.

John obtained a distinction in his final examination and started his teaching career in Tavernspite School.

He then served 12 years in Cresselly Junior School before being appointed head of Mathematics at Narberth Secondary School for the next 25 years.

In 1965 John became Squadron Commander Flight Lieutenant and both he and his colleague Mr Bert Williams formed the ATC Squadron at Pendine before moving to the new headquarters in Whitland.

In the same year he met and married Glesni and made their home in Narberth for the next 18 years.

In 1983 John and his family moved to Saundersfoot and three years later after early retirement, spent the next 17 years travelling back and fourth to Cardiff accompanying his wife Glesni to the BBC where he was sometimes spotted as an extra for parts in Welsh and English plays for S4C.

In his later years John enjoyed spending his time with his two grandchildren Rhys and Rhian and continued his interests in all sorts of art, exhibitions and attending evening classes in painting.

He was also a member of St Andrews Church, Narberth where he and Glesni attended until the latter years.

In 2016 John was made a life member of Narberth and Whitland Rotary Club which he had served with for a number of years.

The family left to mourn and principle mourners are Glesni (wife); Sian and Jeremy (daughter and sonin- law); Rhys and Rhian (grandchildren); Tom, Eira, Caroline and Michael (brother, wife and family); Carwyn, Ann and Catherine (brotherin- law and family) together with numerous family members, friends and colleagues.

The funeral service was held in Parc Gwyn, Narberth on February 24, and was officiated by Revd Martin Cox, who paid a fitting tribute to the celebration of John’s life.

The bearers were Jeremy Clutterbuck, Des Rees, Dave Sheppard and Bob Reeves.

Donations to Parkinsons Association Pembroke Branch. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons Ltd of Milford Haven.

Mrs A M J Davies

Dale Road

MRS Alyce Margaret Jean Davies passed away suddenly but peacefully at Rosepool on December 23. She was 78.

Born at Orielton, Wolfscastle she was the only child of Sirhowy and Eleanor Absalom.

They later moved to Lower North Hill, Treffgarne, where she spent all her working life. She attended Wolfscastle Primary School and later the Secondary Modern.

She was predeceased by her husband Trefor Davies in November 2000.

Her main interests were her family, knitting and after moving to Rosepool she became an active member of the local Parkinsons Group where she enjoyed their many social events and helping with fundraising.

The family left to mourn are Enfys and Nev (daughter and son); Andrew and Sharon (son-in-law and daughter- in-law); Nia Carys, Sian Geraint and Heti (grandchildren); Mrs Doreen Harries, Mrs Nesta Morgan and Mrs Viola Davies (sisters-in-law).

The service was held at Penybont Chapel, Wolfscastle on January 6 followed by interment in the Chapel Cemetery.

The funeral was officiated by Rev Geoffrey Eynon.

The bearers were Gerallt Miles, Haydn Davies, Simon Richards and Stephen Morgan. The organist was Haulwen Warlow.

There were immediate family flowers only with donations to the (DPJ Foundation) or Parkinson’s UK (Pembroke Branch) c/o Paul Jenkins and Sons, of Fishguard who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

Mr G R Davies

Llandeloy

MR Raymond Davies passed away suddenly on January 29 at Withybush Hospital, aged 76 years.

A large gathering of family, friends and neighbours attended the funeral on February 8 at Parc Gwyn Crematorium.

Raymond farmed many years at Troedyrhiw with his brothers and then with his wife and son at Parc-Gwyn.

He had great delight with his livestock and going to the local marts. He also loved being with his family and grandchildren.

Family left to mourn Anna (wife) Jane and David (daughter and son in-law); Maarten (son); George and Emilie, Thomas and Louise (grandsons and partners); Austin (great grandson); Brian and Cynthia (brother and sister in-law); Barbara (sister); John and Ilma (sister and brother in-law); Ben (brother-in-law); Diane, Richard, Cassandra and Emrys (close friends) also nephews, nieces, cousins and friends too numerous to mention.

Unable to attend was Viola (sister).

The service was officiated by the Revd Rhobert Pattinson, Revd Warren Williams and Revd Canon Dorrien Davies.

The bearers were Maarten Davies (son) George and Thomas Nash (grandsons) William Evans (nephew) Ron Thomas and Michael James (friends).
