Mrs H Mellin

Pembroke

MRS HILLARY Mellin of Devon Drive, Pembroke passed away at Withybush Hospital on April 7.

She was 78.

Hillary was born in Tamworth but grew up in Seven Sisters, Glamorgan where she was the eldest of nine children.

Hillary loved the village and the local area often exploring the local mountains and country walks.

She always spoke fondly of the local community and how she loved to go to the dance and meet up with her friends.

She worked for Corona Pop.

When she was 19 Hillary met and married Samuel Mellin, they were married for almost 50 years, until Sam passed away ten years ago.

Hillary was besotted with Sam and loved nothing more than to hear him play the piano and for them to go dancing.

They had five daughters, Rosemarie, June, Caroline, Samantha and Melvina. The family moved to Pembrokeshire when the girls were still very young and they lived in Pembroke where they made many good friends.

Hillary used to love sitting on the steps of the garden in the summer evenings drinking tea and laughing with all of her friends and neighbours in Beaufort Road and later in Devon Drive.

Hillary and Sam used to enjoy driving around the Pembrokeshire countryside, looking for badgers and foxes and visiting the local beaches.

Their favourite beach was Angle and she would love to take as many of her grandchildren as possible for a day out with a full picnic and of course plenty of tea and coffee.

This was not always an easy task as she had 19 grandchildren, and at the last count 31 great-grandchildren and to Hillary’s immense delight two great-great-grandchildren.

Hillary was an excellent knitter and most, if not all, of the grandchildren were presented with a full layette set or shawl. Hillary would always do her best to knit whatever requests were made- socks with toes in, tiny outfits for toys, or just beautiful shell patterned cardigans.

As well as knitting she would hand sew wonderful creations out of old, but stunning dresses, the Mellin dolls were among the best dressed in the area, sometimes wearing identical outfits to the daughters.

Although as she grew older Hillary was not able to keep up with her hobbies she always loved to be part of her large, and growing family and it was a comfort to us all that when she passed away in hospital she was surrounded by as many that could fit into the room.

Hillary will be remembered for her wonderful smile, her love of her family and her devotion to Sam.

The family left to mourn are Rosemarie and Peter (daughter and husband); June (daughter); Caroline and Kevin (daughter and husband); Samantha and Steve (daughter and husband); Melvina (daughter).

The funeral was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium on April 25 and the funeral arrangements were carried out by John Roberts and Son of Pembroke Dock.
