Mrs E M Richards

Milford Haven

THE DEATH occurred on April 6 at Withybush Hospital of Mrs Edna Mary Richards of Bay View Drive, Milford Haven. Edna had been in deteriorating health for some time and had spent the last few months in Williamston Nursing Home, Houghton.

Born in 1930, and from Abergwili near Carmarthen, Edna attended Queen Elizabeth Grammar School Carmarthen before commencing at Goldsmith’s College, University of London where she trained as an infant teacher. Upon gaining her professional qualifications she embarked on her long career at Woodlands Park Junior Boys school, Tottenham, which at the time was still in a wartime damaged part of London. She attended a number of Spurs games and always preferred them over neighbours Arsenal.

During this time, she met her future husband Arthur Richards who she was married to for nearly 60 years.

As a keen traveller, Edna hitch hiked around Europe in the 50s and always claimed that she was in St Tropez before Brigit Bardot. The travel bug remained with her throughout her life and she went to Moscow at the height of the cold war where she was shepherded from factory to factory under constant escort.

Trips followed to faraway places including travel to China where she found that the local food was not to the same standard as that eaten in the UK. Travel also included visits to South America where upon her return she gave talks and slide shows to many societies about her adventures.

As she aged she did not slow up but the method of travel did and soon she was travelling by Cruise Liner which was more agreeable to her husband who enjoyed the nautical aspect of it all. The destination was not always important, sometimes it was specifically the travel, and trips on the Orient Express and Concorde were enjoyed by them both.
