Mr P Davies

St Davids

MR PETER Davies passed away on June 11 at Ashdale Nursing Home, Pembroke.

He was 86.

Originally from St Davids he lived in Bryn Road, St Davids.

Peter was the eldest son of Gwyn and Irene Davies and one of eight children, five sisters and two brothers. He was born in The Fold (which is now The Sound Café).

He joined the Army for his National Service duties in 1950. His wish was to become a butcher within the army, as it was his mother not his father that had taught him to butcher as she had been a cook in the army herself.

However, it was not to be as he was sent to The Royal Artillery as a gunner. Peter married his wife Sylvia in December 1953 before moving to Oystermouth in Swansea where he had an apprenticeship as a butcher.

After he finished his training they both returned to St Davids, where Peter joined his father’s butchery business which was situated where Loshin’s Emporium is today until it relocated to its present site at 2 High Street on the Square.

Peter’s Butchers Shop as everybody knew it, was his pride and joy and he was always keen to innovate new ideas, not only with cuts of meat and different flavoured sausages, but also with the service of his Mobile Shop, which many residents will remember as a useful and valid asset to the communities of St Davids, Solva and the Trefin area. Joined later by his daughter Dawn and then Robert, he also provided employment for many local youngsters over the years.

Peter never did actually retire but was forced to take a back seat due to ill health in 2013.

From 1958 Peter served as a parish councillor, then as a community councillor, holding the role of chairman many times and then as a city councillor when St Davids was officially granted city status in 1995. He became mayor in 1996 with his wife Sylvia becoming mayoress, enjoying many official duties before finally retiring from the council in 2003 serving a total of 45 years. Peter played a prominent role in the community of St Davids, in particular as president of the St Davids branch of the Royal British Legion in which he was responsible for the hugely successful Poppy Appeal which he presided over for many years.

He was also church warden at the cathedral for eight years and also served on the board of governors for Ysgol Bro Dewi for a number of years. He was a keen sports fan and a very good snooker player where he could often be found in the Rafa Club on a Saturday night, having a game or two with friends, young and old.

Due to his ill health Peter resided as Ashdale Nursing Home in Pembroke for the last six months of his life where he was shown true compassion, love, care, respect and dignity to the very end.

He will be greatly missed and is mourned by his wife Sylvia; daughter Dawn; sonin- law James; son Robert and partner Angela; grandchildren Ryan and Lauren and Lauren’s husband Emyr; brother Tony and sisters Muriel and Isobel, and many more too numerous to mention.

The funeral service was held at St David’s Cathedral on June 19.

Donations in Peter’s memory for The Wales Air Ambulance c/o W G Bernard Mathias, 62 New Street, St Davids who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

Mrs H S Jones

Burton

SARDIS Cross Baptist Church held a capacity congregation with other mourners outside on May 22 for a service of remembrance and thanksgiving for the life of Mrs Hilda Sybil Jones of Sardis Cross, who died on May 11 aged 84.

The number and widely representative nature of the 400 people present was strong testimony to a lady who had worked tirelessly and selflessly for more than half a century fund-raising in support of local causes.

A quiet, unassuming person, Hilda regularly throughout her life organised concerts, singing festivals, fetes, dances, strawberry teas and other events in support of her church at Sardis Cross, the Mission Hall at Hill Mountain and the Burton Wednesday Afternoon Club.

She never allowed age or bouts of ill-health to hamper her charitable work, which, with support from husband Rhys, she carried out modestly without seeking personal reward or publicity. When Sardis Church was struggling to survive, Hilda turned it round, acting as a deacon, secretary and treasurer. She will be greatly missed Hilda was the last surviving sibling of a very big family and still lived in the cottage in which she was born in 1933. She attended Burton Elementary and Milford Haven Central Schools and was a lifelong member of Sardis Church, only a stone’s throw from her home. Leaving school aged 16 she started work in Dahl’s Stationers and Bookshop in Castle Square, Haverfordwest, later working for many years at Con Williams, afterwards Armour’s Stationers and Newsagents in Bridge Street, where she was a helpful and popular member of staff.

Aged 19 she married John Morgan (20) of Pope Hill, at Sardis Church and theirs was a happy marriage, living in her family home until John sadly died in 1969.

Their son Stephen, who lives in Neyland and works for the Ministry of Defence on the Castlemartin Range patrol boats, was born in 1957. Hilda was extremely proud of Stephen and her two grandchildren, John, a North Sea oil rig worker based in Aberdeen, and Kate a music teacher living at Bosherston. Hilda remarried in 1992 and her husband Rhys Jones, a wellknown blacksmith and agricultural engineer from Johnston, was her right-hand man in her continued charitable work. They were inseparable and he also looked after her devotedly during her periods of illness. The family went ahead with a Strawberry Tea Hilda had started organising at Sardis Chapel on June 3.

The funeral service was officiated by the Revd Arfon Thomas, who paid tribute to Hilda’s considerable charitable work and true Christian character. The chief mourners were Rhys Jones (husband); Stephen Morgan (son); Kate and William Dawson (daughter and son-in-law); John Morgan (grandson); Amos Dawson and Ira Morgan (great grandchildren); Peggy Williams and Helen Morgan (sisters-in-law); Caroline and Michael Davies (niece and husband); Billy Hancock (nephew); Cassandra Morgan (great niece), also cousins, nephews and nieces and other relatives and friends too numerous to mention. The bearers were John Morgan, Chris Rigby, William Dawson and Jonathan Mayne. Her grandson John’s wife Sam and great grand-daughter Isla were unable to be present.

Hilda was buried in her first husband, John’s, grave in Sardis Church cemetery.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and Son, Haverfordwest.

Donations in aid of the Paul Sartori Foundation and Sardis Baptist Church may be sent c/o Mrs Barbara Summons, 17, West Street, Rosemarket, Milford Haven, SA73 1JH.
