Mrs J E Lewis

Haverfordwest

JEAN (known to all as Joan) passed away at Withybush Hospital on Monday August 7, having been diagnosed with an advanced case of pancreatic cancer, at the age of 76.

Joan was born on January 24 1941 at Priory Mount, Haverfordwest and was the youngest of five siblings.

Her brother and sisters were Hughie, John, Brenda and Phyllis.

The family lived in a cottage on Norton Hill, Rosemarket.

It lies derelict now but was their family home until they were washed out of there by a flood. They were taken in by the then vicar of Rosemarket, Reverend Oliver Evans, and later moved to St Leonards Park, Rosemarket.

She attended Rosemarket School and then worked as a shop assistant in Haverfordwest.

When she and Geoffrey met she was working in Scourfields on the Old Bridge, where Wilko is now. They were courting before Geoffrey went to do his National Service in 1959 and married in Rosemarket Church in 1964.

There were three significant events in 1959, Geoffrey lost his licence for a month, he received his call up papers, and Joan lost two fingers in a bacon slicer.

Later, Joan worked as a dinner lady at Tasker Milward School and then, for nearly nine years acted as an escort on the minibuses Geoffrey was driving.

When Geoffrey retired in 1995 from the MOD, he took a temporary job with Pembrokeshire Voluntary Transport, then moved to transporting disabled children, and Joan joined him after about six months. She was a hard-working and fun loving lady.

Joan loved her family, her sons and their wives, Andrew and Sarah; Mark and Julie and when she could, she spent time with her three grandchildren, Kirsty, Amy and Josh who had a mutual love and fondness for their Nanny and, played a huge part in their growing up, often babysitting them when she could.

She also loved all the family pet dogs.

She enjoyed getting together with friends and family and on many occasions, this involved having family parties at her home, or out for meals at the Cricket Club in Haverfordwest, where they became members, and other local establishments. One such occasion was in 2014 when Joan and Geoffrey celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary.

She especially loved Christmas meals and other family celebrations at both her son’s homes. In the early years of Andrew and Mark growing up she loved having picnics, days out and beach visits with Dave, Marion and family, Roy, Pam and family, Billy, Sheila and their family, which she often revisited with various stories.

In their younger days, Geoffrey and Joan toured around on a motorbike and they continued to do so when they became members of the Vintage Motor Cycle Club and she once again enjoyed riding as pillion with Geoffrey, on many Vintage Bike Runs around West and South Wales. The motor cycle club also, for some twenty years, made visits on alternate years to a similar club in Ireland. In the intervening years, the Irish club visited Pembrokeshire. Both Joan and Geoffrey had wonderful memories from these trips.

When they had a caravan, they used to go away to vintage and steam shows across the country, which both Joan and Geoffrey loved and they enjoyed many happy trips to shows such as the Blandford Steam Fair and Upton Vintage Show.

Joan’s funeral took place on Wednesday August 16 at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth.

It was officiated by the Reverend Steve Bessant.

The family mourners were Geoffrey (husband); Andrew and Mark (sons); Sarah and Julie (daughters-in-law); her three grandchildren Kirsty, Amy and Josh; Sheila (sister- in-law); Paul and Jane (nephew and niece); Dougy (cousin) and his wife, Shirley.

There were also a large number of friends and neighbours that had known Joan for several decades.

The bearers were Mark Lewis (son), Josh Lewis (grandson), Dave Jenkins and Ken Phillips (family friends).

There were immediate family flowers only and any donations in lieu of flowers may be made payable to Cancer Research UK and sent c/o Mrs Julie Lewis, 7 Brompton Grove, Burton, Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, SA73 1LR The funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and Son, of Haverfordwest.

Mrs H Davies

bracknell, Berkshire

(Formerly of Manorbier)

HAZEL Maureen Davies (nee Scourfield) has died peacefully, surrounded by her family, in Bracknell, Berkshire, at the age of 73.

She was the youngest of seven children of Hubert and Amy Scourfield of Manorbier.

She attended Manorbier Primary School, then Greenhill Grammar School, Tenby.

On leaving school she worked as a secretary at the School of Artillery in Manorbier.

She was a member of the Red Cross and became a life-long blood donor.

Mo, as she came to be called, was a member of Penuel Baptist Chapel, where she became a Christian and was baptised in her early teens.

This was to be a defining moment in her life.

She met Ben Davies, from Prendergast, Haverfordwest, at a South Pembrokeshire Young Baptists Association weekend at Cilgwyn Conference Centre in Newcastle Emlyn in 1961. They were married in Manorbier in August 1964 and moved to Bracknell where Ben, newly qualified from Spurgeons College, London, became the minister at Bracknell Baptist Church.

Mo and Ben led the church for 43 years, overseeing three church building programmes, including a 1000-seater facility. They had an international ministry, travelling to four of the five continents. On a visit to Zambia, where her brother had previously lived, she set up a fund to build a classroom for special needs children, which was opened just before her death.

Mo was involved in many aspects of church life, especially with adults and children with special needs. She also worked in the church’s foodbank for many years, until just weeks before her death.

For 18 years Mo was a Marie Curie nurse.

Mo enjoyed running, and in later life completed 10K runs.

She cycled across France many times and skied regularly.

She white water rafted down the Zambezi River.

Mo leaves three children - Naomi, married to Howard; Caradog, married to Anja, and Rebekah, married to Simon, together with 11 grandchildren, Zachary, Jotham, Damaris, Ieuan, Angharad, Tegan, Myfanwy, Silas, Indigo, Ruby and Delilah. Mo was devoted to her children and grandchildren.

Mo also leaves two brothers, Keith Scourfield of Princes Gate and David Scourfield of Bath, together with their respective wives Janet and Dot.

In 2010 Mo was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. Her strong faith in God enabled her to live a very full life, in spite of bouts of treatment.

She constantly said “God is in charge” and faced her health challenges without fear.

She never complained and kept her life-long good sense of humour. Throughout her life she was a rock for family and friends.

She was passionately Welsh in an English environment and during the rugby Six Nations when it came to England she “took no prisoners”.

One of her final photographs was taken at Royal Ascot as she sat in a wheelchair with a Welsh flag draped across her body.

Mo lived and died in the certainty of the resurrection to eternal life.

Her gain is our pain.

A service celebrating Mo’s life will be held at Penuel Baptist Chapel, Manorbier on Saturday September 16 at 2.30 pm.

All welcome.
