Mr D Day

Neyland

DAVID Day, of Cambrian Road, Neyland, died at Withybush Hospital on Saturday, September 2 following a short illness.

He was 88.

Born in 1929, David was a Neyland boy through and through.

After school at Neyland Boarding School, work on the docks in Milford Haven followed.

His National Service was spent as a driver; driving officers and driving lorries, and took him all over the world, including Kenya, Palestine and Egypt.

And it was national service that led to a chance meeting in 1947 that would shape the next 66 years.

After a long, hungry drive to Aldershot, David went for some food and needed to borrow a knife and fork.

Handing over the knife and fork was Harriet. They would spend their lives together.

David and Harriet married in 1949 and had two children, Valerie and Alex.

A fireman on the railway in Neyland, David enjoyed a love of the railway and trains that would last a lifetime.

If you had a question about Neyland and the railway, David was your man. If he didn’t know, nobody would.

Work on the building of the Texaco refinery followed before David began work at Dowty where he made many friends.

In 1979 David and nine Dowty colleagues made front page headlines.

The friends won the Pools, claiming £8,000 each. For David this helped pay off a mortgage, bought a car and helped send him and Harriet on holiday to Kenya.

Holidays were a big part of David’s life and he also enjoyed rugby and gardening.

David was predeceased by Harriet in 2015 but David remained fiercely independent and even took himself abroad for one last holiday.

He has been helped immensely by the kindness and support of his neighbours over the past two years, for which the family are extremely grateful.

Just two months ago David was delighted to meet his great-grandson, Sebastian, joining Lottie among the fourth generation of the family.

The funeral service was held at Parc Gwyn on Tuesday September 12, with the large turnout showing the respect with which he was held.

Rev David Faulkener officiated.

The principal mourners were Valerie and Graham (daughter and son-in-law); Alex and Susan (son and daughter-in-law); Nicholas and Kathryn (grandson and partner); Lee and Lisa (grandson and partner) and Lottie and Sebastian (great granddaughter and great grandson).

There were family flowers only but donations in lieu of flowers, if desired, for the Paul Sartori Foundation, can be sent c/o Mr L Day, 13 Honeyborough Grove, Neyland, SA731TQ.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons, Milford Haven.

Mrs B Webb

Milford Haven

THE death occurred peacefully on September 6 at Withybush Hospital of Mrs Brenda Webb of Steynton Road, Milford Haven.

She was 70.

Born in Milford Haven, Brenda was the only child of the late Victor and Anne Morris.

She left school at the early age of 15 to begin work for the Haverfordwest Solicitors, Eaton Evans and Morris as a secretary and remained there for 25 years.

It was whilst working in Haverfordwest that Brenda met her husband to be Michael and they married in 1968.

In 1988 Brenda decided, after commuting between Milford and Haverfordwest for so long, to look for employment in Milford and went to work for Price and Kelway again as a secretary, retiring in 2011.

She made many great friends during this period of her life.

Brenda would recall many tales, experiences and chances from working in a solicitors office for 50 years.

She had a great respect for the late Mr James Eaton Evans, an old school solicitor.

Although beset with illness for the last 10 years Brenda remained cheerful and upbeat in everything she undertook.

She had a quiet and unassuming personality and was more concerned with the well being of relations and her close friends.

Brenda’s main interests were her home, a passion for gardening, in particular flowers and shrubs, her love of cats and holidays spent in the UK.

Indeed, nothing gave her greater pleasure than visiting relatives in North Wales (her mother’s birthplace).

She also enjoyed going for walks when able to do so.

The principal mourners and family left to mourn are Michael (husband); cousins Ceridwen (Manchester); Eirlys (Northampton); Jean, Jayne, Barry, Tony and Janice, great friends Caroline Hutchings and Caroline Davies.

The funeral service was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium on September 15 and was officiated by the Rev Hugh-John Wilson. A eulogy was read by Dr John Roobol (family friend).

Donations may be sent to the Paul Sartori Foundation Winch Lane, Haverfordwest SA61 1RP.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons Ltd of Milford Haven.

Originally from Cardiff, the family relocated to Haverfordwest in 1976 where Lee worked for the DHSS.

In the 1980s Lee and Terry were successful stewards of Haverfordwest Rugby Club when after retirement she enjoyed working voluntarily for PIPPA.

In recent years she became Terry’s full time carer and is sorely missed.
