Mrs M. Llewellin

Camrose

Melville Llewellin died at Withybush Hospital on March 29th, only two months before her 101st birthday.

Born at Hubberton, Angle in 1908, she was the second of three children of Mr and Mrs James Richards, later of Glenowen, Neyland, and the widow of Norman Llewellin of Kilbarth, Rudbaxton, whose family founded and owned Haverfordwest Churnworks.

She attended a private school in Pembroke from the age of five and completed her education at Hill House College, Haverfordwest.

Melville and her sister Mary married brothers, Mary becoming the wife of Mr D. C. Llewellin of Bicton, St Ishmaels.

Melville was a magistrate at Haverfordwest from 1951 to 1978 and a churchwarden at St Michael's Church, Rudbaxton, from 1948 to 1974. During the war, she served on a local committee, organising weekly gymkhanas in aid of the Red Cross.

She worked tirelessly, farming alongside her husband at Kilbarth for nearly 47 years.

Mrs Llewellin actively supported her husband in his interest in the Agricultural Society, of which he was president in 1953, the first two years when the County Show was held on their land at Kilbarth.

They were proud of their life vice-presidencies and Mrs Llewellin continued to attend the show until she was in her late 90s. Her father had been president in 1947 and 1948.

She and her husband lived briefly at Treffgarne Hall and for about ten years at Priemberg, Camrose, until Melville moved into Fairfield Care Home, Johnston, three years ago.

Melville had enjoyed holidays with her husband in France and Spain, even learning to speak French, and after her husband died in 1998, her sons Bert and Dick Llewellin and their spouses escorted her abroad until about five years ago.

She received two telegrams from the Queen — one for her diamond wedding in 1992, and the other for her 100th birthday last May.

The funeral service on April 8th, at St Michael'’s Church, Rudbaxton, was led by Canon Geoffrey Gwyther, and followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, Narberth.
