Mrs F. E. Slater

Haverfordwest

The death of Florence Eunice Slater occurred at Withybush Hospital on January 23rd. She was 82.

Affectionately known as Floss, she was the youngest of twelve children and was born in Haverfordwest, where she grew up. She worked as a shoe sales assistant in Trews for many years.

She had many interests, including gardening and home decorating.

She was married to David John Slater who predeceased her in 1973. He was employed as a fireman. Her eldest daughter Ann Lettitia Griffiths died in 2006.

She leaves to mourn: Susan and Paul Davies (daughter and son-in-law) and Lisa, Edward and Andrew (grandchildren).

The funeral was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium and was officiated by Rev Hugh George.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and Son, of Haverfordwest.

Mrs P. A. Evans

Tiers Cross (formerly of Pen y Cwm)

The funeral took place on March 27th of Phebe Ann Evans formally of Erw Llon, Penycwm. She died in Torestin Nursing Home, Tiers Cross, where she had lived for more than two years.

Phebe Ann was born in Brawdy Parish and spent all her life in the area, working at different locations including Brawdy Camp.

She married Jimmy in 1942 and they had three children Idwal, Eirwen and Margaret. Jimmy died in 1987 after a long illness.

The service was held in Trefgarne Owen Chapel and officiated by Rev Geoffrey Eynon, and interment followed in Trefgarne Owen cemetery.

The bearers were John Thomas, Terry James, Ken Medlock and Terry Richards (friends of the family).

Principal mourners were: Idwal and Fay (son and daughter-in-law); Eirwen and Harry, Margaret and Steve (daughters and sons-in-law); Ieuan, Alan and Nicola, Sam and Suzanne, Owain Evans. Linda and Howard Davies, Neil and Peter Williams (grandchildren).

Martyn and Melanie Gowland, in Australia, and Phebe’s nine great grandchildren were unable to attend.

There were family flowers only, with donations for Torestin Nursing Home to Mrs F. Evans, 19 Dunsany Park, Haverfordwest, SA61 1UD.

Mrs J. Meaney

Dyffryn

Joan Meaney, of 1 Troed-y-Rhiw, Dyffryn, Goodwick, died on Monday, April 13th, at Withybush Hospital.

The funeral took place on April 20th at the Chapel of Rest, Feidr Castell, Fishguard and was followed by interment at Pentowr Chapel Cemetery.

The service was officiated by Rev John Roberts, Canon Mullins and Rev D. Carl Williams.

Principal mourners are: Peter (husband); Penny and Ron (daughter and son-in-law); Adam and Mary (grandson and wife); Jac (great-grandson); Cecil and Faith (brother and sister-in-law); Nancy Griffiths (aunt); Hywel Griffiths (uncle); Mary Cruikshank (sister-in-law); Ken Ross (brother-in-law) together with nephews, nieces, cousins and friends too numerous to mention.

Among those unable to attend were: Enid Griffiths and Nancy Griffiths (aunts); Barbara, Tony and Maryanne (sisters-in-law and brother-in-law); Betty, Elizabeth and Huw, David and Maria (cousins) and Karen (niece).

The bearers were Paul Griffiths and Gareth Griffiths (nephews), John Hughes and Lyn Davies (friends).

Mr G. Lewis

Fishguard

Glen (Doc) Lewis, of 3 Garn Ingli, Fishguard died on Monday, April 6th at his home.

The funeral took place on Saturday, April 11th, at the Chapel of Rest, Feidr Castell, Fishguard and was followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, Narberth.The service was officiated by Rev Don MacGregor.

Principal mourners are: Joan (wife); Ruth and Stuart (daughter and partner); Fliss and Dan (granddaughter and partner); Joe and Helen (nephew and wife), Hywel and Ann, Carol (close family friends). The bearers were Dai Jones, Colwyn James, Dai Thomas, Bernard Williams, Ieuan Davies and Tony Evans. There was one immediate family wreath.

Donations for the Paul Sartori Foundation may be sent to Paul Jenkins and Sons, Fishguard, who carried out the funeral arrangements.

Mr F. C. Williams

Kilgetty

The death occurred at Withybush Hospital on March 31st of Francis Cyril Williams (known as Cyril) of Lyndhurst Avenue, Broadmoor, Kilgetty. He was 79.

A native of Cresselly, he started his working life with Hubert Davies Undertakers, serving as an apprentice carpenter. He went to work for numerous building firms including Morris and Rixon, Daniels Bros and Pembrokeshire County Council. He started his own carpenter/builder business, which he retired from in 1995.

He lived in Cresselly until 1998 before moving to Broadmoor.

He served his national service with the RAF in Feltwell and was a member of Cresselly and Carew branch of the British Legion, where he became a standard bearer for many years. He also served as a poppy organiser and treasurer. He was forced to stop attending in later years due to his loss of hearing.

In his younger days he played football for Carew, darts and cricket for Cresselly Cricket Club. He enjoyed following the hunt and the British Legion. In his retirement he enjoyed playing bingo at both Angle and Cresselly, cards in Cresselly CC, going to Broadmoor Teenager Recycling Club, watching sport on TV, and spending time with his family.

Family left to mourn and principal mourners are: May Williams (wife, married for more than 52 years); Paul and Janette (son and daughter-in-law); Linda and David Richards (daughter and son-in-law); Margaret (sister); Gwyneth (sister-in-law); Margaret and Andreas (granddaughter and husband); Kizzy and Edward (granddaughter and partner); Jonathan (grandson); Dominic (great grandson); Alan Alsop-Winter, Megan Evans, Wendy James, Carol Nicholls and Emma Nicholls (family friends).

The service was held at Pisgah Baptist Chapel, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, and was officiated by Rev Hywel Brown and Father Paul Davies. There was a reading by Mike Quirk and the bearers were Ivor Richards, Maurice Cole, Glyn Cole and Philip James.

There were family flowers only, with donations for Pisgah Baptist Chapel to Maurice Cole, Cresselly Arms, Cresswell Quay.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by E. C. Thomas and Son, Archways, Green Plains, Stepaside.

Mrs B. L. Lloyd

Johnston

The death of Betty Lilian Lloyd (nee Rees) of 11 Brickhurst Park, Johnston, occurred at Withybush Hospital on April 13th. She was 66.

Betty was the daughter of Ivor and Lily May Rees and was born in Hook. She had three siblings, George, who died in 1976, Sylvia and Gerald. The family lived in Hook until 1956 when they moved into a house built by Ivor at Bulford Road in Johnston.

Betty married Manuel Lloyd in 1963 and moved to Glebelands, Johnston. They later built their own house at Brickhurst Park.

Betty excelled at sport in school and later played for Johnston's ladies football team.

Her first job was in Ocky White department store in Haverfordwest. She then became a school meals supervisor at Johnston CP school, where she was a dinner lady for more 20 years before retiring in 1992 due to ill health. She also took an active interest in Johnston’s carnivals and fetes.

She leaves mourn Manuel (husband); Sharon (daughter); Steven (son) and his partner Helen; Sylvia and Robert (sister and brother-in-law); Gerald and Sylvia (brother and sister-in-law) and Lily May (mother).

The service was held in Thornton Baptist Chapel followed by interment at Milford Haven Cemetery on April 21st. The service was officiated by Rev Ifor Williams and the organist was Muriel Williams.

The bearers were Jeremy Rees, Jeff Thomas, Rhys Warrell and David Warrell.

Mr D. E. White

Tenby

The death of David Edward White, of Lady Park, Tenby, occurred on March 27th at Withybush Hospital. He was 81.

David was born in Hong Kong. He was one of twin boys of the late Mr and Mrs Frank White, of Freshwater East, who had relocated to Hong Kong following the closure of the Dockyard in Pembroke Dock. They returned to Wales in 1930 and lived in Swansea until 1936, then moved to Freshwater East to run the village shop.

During his early childhood he joined the boy scouts at Pembroke Dock and then Pembroke. He was also founder member of the Pembroke Dock County School No 1574 squadron of the ATC.

After leaving school, David spent a few months with Hancocks Shipbuilding at Pembroke before joining the General Electric Co at Birmingham in 1944 as an electrical engineering apprentice. During his apprenticeship he attended Handsworth Technical College and qualified as a graduate member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers.

He married Iris in 1951 at Erdington Parish Church.

He joined South Wales Electricity Board at the sub area HQ in Tenby in March 1953 as an engineering draughtsman and then worked for 31 years as a substations operational and construction engineer until retirement in 1986.

David became a member of Deer Park Baptist chapel in the mid 1950s and later became a deacon. He became secretary of the Tenby Christian Aid Committee, and in 1993 he became a member and deacon of Cold Inn Baptist Chapel.

David was a leader of the scout movement in Tenby, then group scout leader in Saundersfoot for 20 years.

He was founder member of the North Tenby Residents’ Association where he served as chairman for a number of years. He was also a founder chairman of New Hedges Shortmat Bowling Club, a past master of Castlemartin Lodge of Freemasons and past provincial grand lodge officer.

During his retirement he enjoyed holidays with Iris the UK and also visit many European countries. He was fortunate to return to Hong Kong with his twin Owen to visit the hospital where they was born.

Principal mourners are: Iris (wife); Rosalind (daughter); Graham and Christine (son and daughter-in-law); Caroline and Steve (daughter and son-in-law); Gareth, Mark, Ryan, Dylan and Ceri (grandchildren); Priscilla and Gerald (niece and husband); Michael, Hannah and Joseph (nephew, great niece and great nephew); Emily, Paul, Thomas and Megan (great niece and husband, great great nephew and great great niece); Ben (great nephew); Robert and Christine, Martin and Gill, Nigel and Jayne (nephews and wives); many other great nieces and nephews; Joan Taylor (cousin).

The service was held at Cold Inn Baptist Chapel followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, Narberth. His ashes were interred at St Michael’s Cemetery, Pembroke. The services were officiated by Rev Ifor Williams, Rev Hywel Brown and Mick Quirk.

The bearers were Gareth and Mark Brewin (grandsons); Robert Wilde (nephew) and Ben Davies (great nephew).

Unable to attend were Joan Taylor (cousin); Michael, Hannah and Joseph White; Ryan, Dylan and Ceri White, Jayne Perkins.

There were family flowers only, with donations for Cold Inn Baptist Chapel or the chemotherapy day unit at Withybush Hospital to E. C. Thomas and Son, Stepaside, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

Mrs M. J. Thomas

Llangwm (formerly of Tenby)

The death of Mildred Jean Thomas, of Llangwm, occurred on March 25th at Withybush Hospital.

She was originally from Tenby and was an infants teacher, who trained at Salisbury Teacher Training College and worked in Pembrokeshire prior to her marriage.

Her interests were elocution, for which she received many awards, amateur dramatics, reading, history and music.

She was predeceased by her husband, Mervyn G. Thomas in 2004.

The principal mourners were: Alyion Newis-Edwards (daughter); Kathryn Pope (daughter); Angharad and Lucinda (granddaughters); Stephen Pope (son-in-law), plus relations in Cornwall, Liverpool and Pembrokeshire.

The service was held at Parc Gwyn and officiated by Rev Roger Hart. The bearers were Paul Eades, Stephen Pope, Paul Hay and Graham Thomas.

There were family flowers only, with donations for the Tenby branch of Tenovus to E. C. Thomas and Son, Stepaside, who carried out the funeral arrangements.

Mr H. Prout

Saundersfoot

The death of Harry Prout of Ragged Staff, Saundersfoot, occurred at home on April 9th. He was 89.

Harry was a native of Saundersfoot and during his working life he worked as a car mechanic at Vic Morris, a car salesman at the car exchange, Tenby and was a newsagent/shopowner from 1957 until he retired in 1972.

During the war he served in the RAF as an aircraft fitter. Harry met his wife Winnie at the RAF base Sherburn in Elmet, north Yorkshire, where he was known by his airforce nickname Jed (after the actor Jed Prouty), a name his wife still used, to the confusion of many people newly-introduced to Harry.

Harry had three main interests apart from his family. He was very fond of his food, in particular the seasonal seafood harvests of mackerel and brown shrimps.

He was passionate about Saundersfoot and could also be relied on for anecdotes about Saundersfoot characters.

From an early age Harry was passionate about cars. Harry was still driving last year at the age of 88.

Predeceased by his brother Leslie, he leaves to mourn: Winnie (wife); Michael and Janet (son and daughter-in-law); Martin (son); Malcolm and Monica (son and daughter-in-law); Clare, Emma, Matt and Milo (grandchildren); Albert and Elke (brother and sister-in-law — unable to attend, from Germany); Ethel Rees and Rev Richard Rees (sister and brother-in-law) and Ethel Prout (sister-in-law).

The service on April 20th was held at Parc Gwyn, and the bearers were Michael, Martin, and Malcolm (sons), and James Beckinsale (granddaughter’s husband).

Llawhaden

Mona Thomas, of Castle View Care Home, Llawhaden, and formerly of Glanamman, Ammanford, died on April 9th. She was 86.

Mr P. J. Morgan

Haverfordwest

The death of Peter James Morgan, of Keats Grove, Haverfordwest, occurred at Withybush Hospital on March 31st. He was 73.

Peter was a hard worker and was part of the work force at Kraft in Merlins Bridge. He also worked in the power station at Texaco for many years before he had one of two brain hemorrhages. He worked hard to return to health and was able to enjoy gardening. He won prizes for his homemade jams, chutney and wine.

The principal mourners and family left to mourn are: Tina (daughter); Ben and Amy (grandchildren); Linda, Margaret, Marina and Joan (sisters) and Ken (brother).

The funeral service was held at Parc Gwyn and was officiated by Rev Paul Davies.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and Sons, of Haverfordwest.

Mr D. J. Smith

Pembroke

The death of David John Smith occurred on April 3rd at Ashdale Care Home, where he had been a resident for two years. He previously lived at St Nicholas Crescent, The Green, Pembroke, and was 78.

A native of Pembroke he was a clerk in the goods office, at Pembroke Railway Station, then undertook national service for two years in the Royal Army Service Corps. He then worked at Hall and Woodhouse Brewery in Blandford, Dorset, as a drayman, the steel and woollen factories, Pembroke Dock, before finally working for Pembroke Borough Council, Pembroke Rural Council and South Pembrokeshire District Council, from where he retired in 1995.

His interests included gardening, walking and rugby. He was also a church warden for Stackpole Church for many years and for the last ten years St Michael’s Church, Pembroke, until ill-health prevented him from attending.

He was predeceased by his wife Glenys Marlene Smith in 1999.

The family left to mourn are Lynda and Michael Lustig (daughter and son-in-law); Andrew Lustig and Clare Gwilliam (grandson and girlfriend); Emma and Chris Williams (granddaughter and husband); Anthony and Mandy Smith (son and daughter-in-law); Gareth Smith (grandson); Stanley and Jean Smith (brother and sister-in-law); Barbara Smith (sister-in-law); Heather and Jennifer Irons (niece and great niece).

Unable to attend were Andy and Muriel Andrews (sister and brother-in-law in Canada).

The funeral was held at St Michael’s Church, Pembroke and was officiated by Rev Roger Jones. The bearers were Andrew Lustig, Chris Williams, Peter Harts and Barry Clarke.

Donations for Diabetes Wales UK and Ashdale Care Home may be sent to Graham Thomas, 34 Charles Thomas Avenue, Pembroke Dock SA72 6UR.

Mr J. P. A. Jenkins

Birmingham

(formerly of Crundale)

John (Jack) Penry Arnold Jenkins died at his home in Birmingham on March 31st.

Brought up in Crundale, Hook Farm, he later served in the Welsh Regiment. When he was seriously wounded, he was nursed in the old county hospital.

Predeceased by his wife, and his brothers Fred and Peter, Jack leaves to mourn his family of five and their families and his twin sister Bron who lives in Crundale.

His funeral was held in Birmingham.

Interment took place on April 15th at St Nicolas Church, Kings Norton, Birmingham.

Jack’s grandsons were bearers and the Welsh flag was draped over the coffin. The Royal British Legion also attended to pay tribute with a large gathering of family and friends.

Mr W. R. S. Horne

Pembroke Dock

The death of William Reginald Sidney Horne occurred at West Wales General Hospital on April 15th. He was 94.

Reg, as he was known, was originally from Warwick, but moved to Pembroke Dock in 1958.

Reg began his working life as a reporter with the Warwick Advertiser before moving on to become a radio engineer with Sims of Warwick.

Following war service, he returned to Simms before setting up his own electrical retail business in Leamington Spa in 1947.

On moving to Pembrokeshire in 1958, he began working with the Army Kinema Corporation at Manorbier camp, staying with the company until his retirement in 1976.

Between 1941 and 1945, he served as a radio engineer in the Royal Air Force spending much of the war on secondment with an Australian air force squadron.

He was an active member of the Pembroke Probus Club and he will also be remembered for his associations with the ‘South Pembs Crowd’ and Pater Pantomime Society, his presidency of the Martletwy Young Farmers’ Club and work with the Pembroke Dock Youth Club.

Helping young people played an important part in his life. A father, grandfather and great grandfather, not only did he provide support and encouragement to his own family, but many young people benefited from the contribution he made to organisations. Many groups in the south Pembrokeshire area also benefited from his assistance in providing audio equipment for community events. In 2001 he was commended by Pembroke Dock Town Council for his years of voluntary service in the area.

He married his first wife Brenda Mellor, of Warwick, in 1939, but she died following the birth of their son John in 1944. In 1956 he married Jean Evans from Pembroke Dock with whom he had a further three children, Liz, Bill and Margaret. They were married for 53 years.

Family left to mourn are: Jean Horne (wife); John and Bill Horne (sons); Liz Arthur and Margaret Edwards (daughters); Judy and Linda Horne (daughters-in-law); Ian Edwards (son-in-law); Jonathan, Alex, Kate, Helen, Sarah, Ben, John, Rachel, Kathryn, Sam and Matthew (grandchildren); Bethan, Ieuan and Harvey (great grandchildren).

The funeral service was held at St John’s Church, Pembroke Dock, and Parc Gwyn, Narberth, on April 23rd. It was officiated by Rev Thelma Barber. The bearers were John Horne, Jonathan Horne, Ian Edwards, John Edwards, Bill Horne and Matthew Horne.

There were family flowers only, with donations in lieu for the Motor Neurone Society and Cancer Research UK to Graham Thomas, 34 Charles Thomas Avenue, Pembroke Dock SA72 6UR.

Miss B. M. Morris

Haverfordwest

The death of Blodwen May Morris occurred at Withybush Hospital on April 11th. She was 98.

Blodwen was the youngest of five children of Dan and Martha Morris of Slade Farm, Haverfordwest, and was predeceased by Tom, Joe, Mary and Mattie.

She began her working life with James Adams Drapers, where she remained until the establishment closed. She then joined the staff of T. P. Hughes and Sons, working alongside her sister Mattie.

She worked there for many years until her retirement.

She had been a faithful member of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church until failing health prevented her attendance, but she was always keen to be kept informed of events concerning the church.

The funeral was held on April 24th at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church. Rev Martyn Evans officiated, and this was followed by interment at City Road Cemetery.

The bearers were Nigel and Robert Griffiths, Christopher and Ian Jones (cousins).

The family left to mourn are: Doreen Morris (niece); Betty Griffiths, sons Nigel and Robert Griffiths and families; Joyce and Chris Jones, sons Christopher and Ian and family (cousins); May Gow and family (cousins).

Mr W. H. Howells

Pembroke Dock (formerly of Stackpole)

The death William Henry Howells (Billy) occurred on March 26th. He was 82.

For the past year, Billy lived at Apley Lodge Care Home, Pembroke Dock, and was formerly of Stackpole. He worked all his working life on various farms, and later for the National Trust, working in woodlands. He retired in 1986.

His interests included singing and yodelling.

Family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Elsie Lustig (sister); Tina and Philip, Michael and Lynda, Elizabeth and Egon (niece and nephews and partners); Sophie and Martyn, Andrew, Emma, Nathan and Matthew (great nieces and nephews), plus many cousins and family members.

The service was held at St James’ and Elidyr Church, Stackpole and was officiated by Rev Richard Rees. The bearers were Nathan Woods, Matthew Lustig, Andrew Lustig and Peter Callan.

Mr W. S. R. Footner

Swindon (formerly of Pembroke Dock)

The ashes of Walter Sidney Rodgers Footner were interred recently in the grave of his mother May Footner at Llanion Cemetery. He died on July 29th in Swindon, where he had lived for many years.

He was predeceased by sisters Denys, Rosa, Hilda and Evelyn and his brother George.

Walter was born in Pembroke Dock in 1925 and was educated at the Coronation School.

At the age of 14, he went to the Army Training school at Arberfield which was to shape so much of the rest of his life.

Upon graduating he served in the Far East from 1944 to 1947, Libya in 1949 and Cyprus in 1956, from where he returned to the UK and in 1960 finished his army days.

In 1949, he married Edna Roach and they had two children, Lynda and Roger.

On returning to the UK he secured work with Marine Mountings in Swindon. His REME background was the basis for him working in mechanical engineering. He then went on to work for Pressed Steel Fisher, British Leyland and Rover. After his retirement, he lived with Edna near Swindon until his death.

In his earlier years Walter had been a keen rugby player and was a member of the famous 48 Quins team. He was a lifelong member of Pembroke Dock Harlequins.

Later in life he was a keen gardener and had a full and varied allotment. He was also the local president of the Burma Star in Swindon and worked tirelessly for that cause.

He leaves to mourn: Edna (wife); Lynda and Roger (children); Simon, Claire and James (grandchildren) and Lewis, Lucy and Isabel (great grandchildren).

Mr W. J. Morris

Wiston

The death occurred on April 20th at Churchill Lodge, Wiston of William (Bill) John Morris. He was 95.

Following a well attended service at Wiston Presbyterian Chapel he was laid to rest with Eunice, his wife of 65 years, who predeceased him four-and-a-half years ago.

The service was officiated by Rev Martyn Evans and Rev William Owen.

He leaves to mourn: Ieuan and Gill Morris (his son and daughter-in-law); Janet Morgan (daughter); Francis Morris, Marcus Morris and Alistair Morris, William and Amanda Morgan, Heather and Alistair Mcloud, and Edward and Martina Morgan (grandchildren); Nia and Ruben Morgan and Ethan and Abigale Mcloud (great grandchildren).

The bearers were his grandsons and Martin Williams.

Pembroke

Jack A’Lee, of The Parade, Pembroke, died on April 19th at Ashdale Nursing Home. He was 76.

Jack was a jockey before joining the army in 1951 where he fought in Korea and Malaya.

He was a well-known figure in Pembroke and Pembroke Dock, where he was a bingo caller for nearly 30 years for John Haggar.

Left to mourn are: Doreen (wife); Ivor, Colin and Scott (sons); Jeannette, Margaret, Jacquline (daughters); Glen (stepson) and grandchildren and great grandchildren too numerous to mention, The funeral took place on April 29th at St Michael’s Church, Pembroke, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, Narberth.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by John Roberts and Son, Pembroke Dock.
