Mrs O. J. Kenna
Pembroke
The death occurred at Withybush Hospital, on April 6th, of Olga Jean Kenna, of Wheelers Way, Pembroke. She was 65.
Olga was born at 59 Main Street, Pembroke, the youngest of seven children of Robert and Hilda Preece (two of whom died in infancy). Following the early death of her father the family moved to West Street, Orange Gardens. She attended Monkton school and Pembroke Grammar School, and in 1961 she married Henry Kenna.
Olga then went on to train as a State Registered Nurse at the County Hospital, Haverfordwest, and Glangwili Hospital, Carmarthen and later trained in midwifery at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, where she also taught student nurses.
She moved back to Pembroke to look after her mother and took up district nursing. Olga will be remembered by many as a kind and caring nurse who was totally dedicated to her work.
A large gathering of family, friends and nursing colleagues attended the funeral, on April 14th, at Westgate Church, Pembroke, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn. The service was led by Rev Rob James.
The bearers were Simon Preece, Tony Preece, Steve Goddard and Paul Hay.
The principal mourners and family left to mourn are: Henry Kenna (husband); Elaine Hogg (sister); Elizabeth and Raymond Phillips (sister and brother-in-law, unable to attend); Beryl Hay, Margaret Jones, Glyn and Sylvia Mathias, Donald and Pat Preece and Mary Preece (cousins); Patricia Preece (sister-in-law); David and Joy Furlong (brother and sister-in-law); Colin and Jane, Simon Preece, Susan and Steve Goddard and Emily, Wendy Jones, Kirsty and Ben, Robert, Tony and Wendy Preece, Hayley and Gemma, Rebecca and Emlyn Hallett and Rachel Preece (nieces and nephews).
Olga was predeceased by her brothers Bill and Sidney Preece.
There were family flowers only, but donations for Ward ten, Withybush Hospital, may be sent to John Roberts and Sons, Funeral Directors, 51 Bush Street, Pembroke Dock who carried out the funeral arrangements.
Mrs J. Cox
(formerly of Saundersfoot)
The death occurred on March 29th, at Pencoed Residential Home, Wooden, of Joyce Cox, formerly of Incline Way, Saundersfoot. She was 92.
Originally from Nottingham, she started work at the age of 14 at a solicitors in Nottingham before joining the Automobile Association. Then she went to work for the civil service during the war years, in particular National Savings, and later at accountants and law firms all in a secretarial capacity. She retired during the 1970s.
Her interests included gardening, sewing, walking, photography, visiting stately homes and gardens and spending happy times with her family and friends.
Joyce had been married to her husband, who died in 2006, for 66 years and had received two telegrams from the Queen, of which they were both very proud.
Family left to mourn and principal mourners, are: Jennifer and Hilary (daughters); Derek and Geoff (sons-in-law); Edward and Christine (nephew and wife); Ian (great nephews); Robert and Alison Roberts and Ethan (great-nephew and wife and son); Stephen, Judith, Margaret and John (nephews and nieces); Rev Kenneth Sharpe, Rev Donald and Marie Pope (friends of Joyce); Hilary and Henry Fullick, Harold James, Alan Cloake; Sue, Amanda and Denise (Pencoed Residential Home).
The funeral service was held at Parc Gwyn crematorium and was officiated by Rev Donald Pope and Rev Kenneth Sharpe. The bearers were Graham, Terry, Arthur and John.
There were family flowers only, with donations for RNLI Tenby c/o E. C. Thomas and Son, Archways, Green Plains, Stepaside SA67 8LT who also carried out the funeral arrangements.
Mr W. I. Reynolds
Llanfallteg
The death of William Islwyn Reynolds, known as Wil Penbont, of Penybont, Llanfallteg, Whitland, occurred at his home on April 6th. He was 91.
Born at Meanclwyd, Llandissilio, he then moved with his family to Penybont when he was two. He had lived in Llanfallteg all his life, apart from the short time he spent lodging in Haverfordwest, when he was a trainee gentlemen’s hairdresser, with Mr Baggott and the time that he was away in the army from 1940-46, where he was promoted to the rank of sergeant.
He had his own business as a barber in Clynderwen and Narberth until he decided to come home to work on the family farm and to care for his parents.
He was a faithful active member and deacon at Capel Mair chapel, a keen member of Pembrokeshire NFU, and a supportive member of the Clynderwen branch of the Royal British Legion.
His interest in flowers gave him great pleasure as he was often asked to decorate chapels and churches for local weddings and thanksgiving services.
The funeral was held at Capel Mair, Llanfallteg, when Rev Huw George officiated, assisted by Revs Tom Owen, Llinos Edwards, Aled Gwyn and Lowyn Jones. The organist was Mrs Eilir Blethyn.
The bearers were Dave and Willie Reynolds, John and Huw Thomas, Arwyn and Geraint Bowen (nephews).
The service at the chapel was followed by a short service at Parc Gwyn where the legion prayer was said by Bob Hathaway, and the flag bearer was Lawrence Bowen.
Chief mourners were sister Nell, and nephews and nieces and their families. There was a large gathering of family and friends too numerous to mention.
There were family flowers only, with donations in lieu for Marie Curie, which may be sent to Ken Davies and Sons, Blaenwen, Clynder-wen, who carried out the funeral arrangements.
Mr L. J. Breeze
(Formerly of Hook)
The death occurred at Pembroke Haven Residential Home, on April 14th, of Mr Laverick John Breeze, of Newtown Road, Hook. He was 87.
Born in Port Lion, Burton, Laverick served his time as an electrician at Thomas Ward and Son, Pembroke Dockyard.
Although in a reserved occupation during the war he volunteered to join the Royal Navy and later trained with the Marines at Fort William, in Scotland, before joining the combined operations where he served in the Far East reaching the rank of chief petty officer attached to the Ghurka Regiment.
After the Far East war ended he married Mair Meredith who was his wife for 62 years. He then returned to work for Ward’s in Milford Haven until the yard closed. Then he worked in the mining depot until he started work at Esso, where he remained until his early retirement.
Throughout his life he attended Galilee Baptist Chapel, Llangwm, where he became a deacon and a Sunday School superintendent. During his long retirement Laverick enjoyed gardening, watching sport and became a member of the local Burma Star Association.
He leaves to mourn Helen and Paul (daughter and son-in-law); Huw and Julie (son and daughter-in-law); and Matthew and Nathan.
The funeral took place at Galilee Baptist Chapel and was officiated by Rev Ron Price. Cremation followed at Parc Gwyn. The bearers were Peter Phillips, Barry Childs, Philip Phelps and Gerald Thomas.
There were family flowers only with donations for the Royal British Legion to Peter Phillips, Quarry Edge, Foxhall, Llangwm.
The funeral arrangements were carried out by Glyn Thomas of Freystrop.
Mrs B. C. Oakley
Merlins Bridge (Formerly of Ambleston and Clarbeston Road)
Betty Christine Oakley died at Parc-y-Llyn nursing home, Ambleston, on April 13th, aged 87, following the death of her husband Gordon a month previously.
Betty was born at Tylorstown, Rhondda, the second child of William and Emily Lloyd. The family then returned to their home village of Wallis and later Ambleston. Betty attended Woodstock school and worked on local farms before joining the ATS on her 21st birthday. Her ATS years were spent at Wrexham, Donnington, France, the resettlement camps at Luneburg, Germany, and finally Millbank Hospital, London, where she commenced her nursing training.
At Donnington, Betty met her future husband Gordon, though due to war time circumstances, they did not marry until 1951.
Married life started in Ambleston, with Gordon still serving in the Royal Navy. They soon moved to Clarbeston Road, where Gordon was employed as a postman. Together they raised four children, Katharine, Miriam, Rhys and William who died in 1998.
Betty’s life revolved around her home, family and church. She faithfully attended both Wiston and Clarbeston churches, and became a Mothers’ Union member. In 1980, the family moved to Walters Avenue, Merlins Bridge, where Betty joined the local church and MU branch of Haroldston St Issells. She enjoyed socialising at the Haverfordwest Pensioners’ Voice Club, and worked enthusiastically as a community councillor.
The Spittal British Legion branch and its activities played an important role in both Betty and Gordon’s lives, and they were acknowledged for their long-standing membership.
The funeral was held at Clarbeston Church on April 21st. Rev N. Cale officiated and was assisted by Canon D. Evans. Also present was Rev D. Davies and Miss Nan Warlow, who acknowledged Betty’s faithful MU service. The Spittal British Legion branch paid tribute to her.
Left to mourn are: Katharine and Kevin, Miriam and David (daughters and sons-in-law); Rhys and Debbie (son and daughter-in-law); Margaret, Sara and Bethan (granddaughters); Diane Lloyd (sister-in-law); Margaret Yapp (sister-in-law), and other family and friends too numerous to mention. Her brother John Lloyd was unable to attend due to ill health.
The bearers were George Llewellin, Malcolm Brown, Michael Hassall and Adrian Lloyd.
Donations to Clarbeston Church may be sent to Robert James, Moat Grange, New Moat, Clarbeston Road.
The funeral arrangements were carried by Ken Davies and Sons, of Clynderwen.
Mrs D. Jones
Johnston
Doris ‘Joyce’ Jones, of Glebelands, Johnston, died on April 9th at Withybush Hospital. She was 85.
She was originally from Ferndale, Rhondda Valley, and came to Pembrokeshire in 1937. She worked in service in London and joined the ATS between 1940 and 1946 for the Queen’s Own London Regiment and was based in Lewes on the south coast.
Her interests were her garden and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by William Jones in 1970.
Family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Val and Anthony, Linda and Michael, Barbara and Raymond (daughters and sons-in-law); Tony and Carol (son and daughter-in-law); Joanne, Marie, Nina, Natalie, Kerry, Rebecca, Rhian, Sian and Nathan (grandchildren); Cairon, Connor, Shannon, Holly, Iestyn, Cameron, George, Ioan, Maisie, Anne and Alfie (great grandchildren); Ruby and David, Nancy and Geoff (sisters and brothers-in-laws); Marion and Gwynne, Cyril and Rose, Neil, Richard and Rose, Joyce (in-laws), plus many nieces and nephews.
The funeral was held at Johnston Baptist Chapel and Parc Gwyn, and was officiated by Derek Trivette. The bearers were Tony, Michael, Raymond and Anthony.
The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons, Milford Haven.
Mrs E. E. Edwards
Haverfordwest
The death occurred of Ena Elizabeth Edwards, of Park House, Withybush Road, Haverfordwest who died at Withybush Hospital on March 27th. She was 83.
Originally from Brawdy, she was brought up into a farming family at Little Asheston, Brawdy, in the 1970s and ran the gliding club with her husband Frank.
Her main interests were her family and friends. Ena loved being around her children, 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She made many friendships over the years when living at Brawdy, The Rhos and Withybush areas.
She also enjoyed being a member of Wolfscastle over 60s. Ena was well-loved by all who came into contact with her.
Over the last 14 years she was in poor health but never complained and always maintained a cheerful disposition. During this time she was cared for by her daughter Daphne and family.
She was predeceased by Frank Edwards in 1994.

The service was held at Penybont Congregational Chapel, Wolfscastle, and was officiated by Rev Geoffrey Eynon. The bearers were Gavin Forsyth, Gary Forsyth, Dean Edwards and Colin Francis.
There were family flowers only, with donations in lieu of flowers for ward four, Withybush Hospital or to Penybont Chapel, Wolfscastle, to Mr and Mrs Ken and Val Richards, Tanlon, Porthgain, Haverfordwest, SA62 5BP.
The funeral arrangements were carried out by William Lewis, Wolfscastle.
