Mr. W. Y. Evans

Merlins Bridge

The death occurred at Withybush Hospital on May 1st of William Ynyr Evans (known as Ynyr). He lived in Jenkins Close, Merlins Bridge, and was 91.

Originally from Portfield Gate, he left school aged 14 to work on a farm. He was also a lorry driver with Bibby’s Foods, and finally a postman for 23 years.

He enjoyed singing and was a member of Haver-fordwest The service was held at the Chapel of Rest, Feidr Castell, Fishguard, and was followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, Narberth. The service was officiated by Rev D. Carl Williams, Rev John Roberts and Rev. Emlyn Jones.

The bearers were Tony Davies, Ian Bevan, Huw Bevan, Thomas Bevan and Richard Bevan (nephews).

Principal mourners are: Dilys and Betty (sisters); Diane, Val and John, Sian and Gwyn (nieces and nephews-in-law); Tony and Ann, Ian and Kerry, Huw and Yvette, (nephews and nieces-in-law); together with her great-nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.

There were family flowers only with donations in lieu if desired for ward seven and ward 14 of Withybush Hospital to Paul Jenkins and Sons, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

Mrs M. A. Thomas

Dinas Cross

The funeral of Martha Ann (Mattie) Thomas, of Cambrian Terrace, Dinas Cross, took place on May 23rd at Tabor Chapel, Dinas, followed by interment at Machpelah Cemetery. She died on May 19th, aged 95, at Langton Residential Home, Scleddau.

Principal mourners are: Brian and Gwyneth Thomas (son and daughter-in-law); Peter and Eleri Williams (granddaughter and husband); Brenda George, Janet Hawkins, Gillian Morse, John Williams, Desmond and Jane Williams, Denzil and Keith Williams, Sandra and David Owen, Harris and Brenetta Morgans (nephews and nieces); Angharad Morse, Neville George and Sandra Vaughan (great nephew and nieces).

The bearers were Richard Watts, Phillips Davies, Morys Rhys, Irfon James, Glyndwr Morse and Derek Williams.

Unable to attend was Heulwen Thomas. Rev Alwyn Daniels officiated with Rev Carl Williams and Rev John Roberts. The organist was Margaret Rhys.

There were family flowers only, with donations in lieu for Langton Hall to Paul Jenkins and Sons, Feidr Castell, Fishguard, SA65 9BB, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

Mr. G. M. Roberts

Haverfordwest

Grenville Maurice Roberts of North Court, Haverfordwest died on May 20th at Withybush Hospital. He was 80.

Originally from Leicestershire, he worked at Texaco refinery, for numerous other firms and mainly for Hamard catering.

He was retired but worked for Peter Thomas of the Crowther Inn, Rhos-crowther. His interests included a love for pets and darts.

Family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Chris, Gary and Keith (sons); Jackie, Margaret, Jenny, Susan and Rebecca (daughters); Paul, Neil, Liam, Thomas, Ryan, Sam and Megan.

The funeral was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium and was officiated by Martin Cox.

The bearers were grandsons Paul, Neil, Liam, Thomas, Ryan and Samuel.

Donations in lieu of flowers, for ward ten, Withybush Hospital, may be sent to Mr G. Thomas, 34 Charles Thomas Avenue, Pembroke Dock SA72 6UR.

Wiston

In the obituary following the funeral of Penrhyn Charles Spencer, the names of Valerie Spencer (sister-in-law) and Paige (great granddaughter) were inadvertently omitted.

Mr. F. Stockford

Pembroke

The death of Frederick Stockford, of Grove Way, Pembroke, occurred on May 22nd.

He was 84, and he worked as a labourer.

The funeral service was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium and was officiated by Rev R. Jones.

Principal mourners and family left to mourn are: Kathleen Stockford (wife); Patricia and Paul (daughters and son-in-law); Tony (son); Gareth and Katie (grandchildren); Nigel and Mick Cornford (nephews); Sue and Derek Hafford (niece and husband); Sean and Ann, Coleen and Ken (brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law). Mr. C. G. John

Stepaside

The funeral of Clifford Gordon John, of Buesley Close, Pleasant Valley, Stepaside, was held on June 6th, following his death on May 30th, aged 84.

He was a resident of Park House Court Nursing Home, Tenby, where he had been a resident for six weeks.

He was a native of Wiseman’s Bridge, and worked for SWEB as way leave officer, and Narberth RDC. He retired from South Pembs district council as an enforcement officer 19 years ago. He was a tank driver with the RA Regiment, serving in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.

His interests included a longstanding involvement in Freemasonary, and a former president of Kilgetty Cricket Club. His other interests included the male voice choirs, a former member of The Glee Singers, motoring and gardening.

He was predeceased by Rene, who died in April 2006.

Family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Mike and Eira (son and daughter-in-law); Anthony ‘Adge’ and Libby (son and partner); Val and Adrian (daughter and son-in-law); Caroline and David, Jenny and Richard, Gareth, Rhys, Diana, Fleur, Tom, Billy and Graham; nine grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.

The funeral was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium and was officiated by Rev Robin Webley. The bearers were Don Johns, Eric Evans, Morgan Lewis and Patrick Wadic.

There were family flowers only with donations in lieu of flowers for Cancer Research to Tom Ellis, Stone-Lea, Valley Road, Saunndersfoot.

Mr. R. S. Bulmer

Milford Haven

The death occurred at Morriston Hospital on June 8th, of Randolph Sonnie Bulmer, of 10 Gateholm Avenue, Milford Haven.

A native of Prendergast, Haverfordwest, Sonnie started work as a carpenter with Isaac Arnold before starting his own business erecting farm buildings. Following this, he ran his own milk delivery business for 18 years. After retiring in 1999, his focus turned to his family and his growing number of grandchildren.

The funeral took place on June 12th at St Katharine’s and St Peter’s Church, Milford Haven followed by interment at Milford Haven Cemetery. Canon John Davies officiated and Michael Nicholas was the organist.

The bearers were Paul Bulmer, David Bulmer, Andrew Thompson, Vincent Browne, Sam Thompson and James Dewhurst.

Principal mourners are: Louise (wife); Mandy and Andrew Thompson, Michelle and Vince Browne (daughters and sons-in-law); Paul and Nicola Bulmer, David and Lisa Bulmer (sons and daughters-in-law); Sam, Alex, Thomas, Isaac, Rhys, Ioan, Charlotte and Cian (grandchildren); Rosiland and James Dewhurst and family (sister and brother-in-law); and Shirley and George Bennett (cousins); together with close friends John and Joyce Layton and other family and friends too numerous to mention.

Mrs. E. M. Jones

Neyland

The death of Edna Mary Jones, of Neyland, occurred on May 28th. She was 94 and leaves three children and one granddaughter.

Edna, known as Teddy to her close family, was born in Paris on the eve of world war one to Henry and Polly Williams. Her father was personal valet to W. Vanderbilt, the American millionaire. On the outbreak of war the family returned to Wales, and her father sailed for New York to join his employer. He later volunteered for the Canadian Highlanders, and fought at Vimy Ridge and The Somme.

In her late teens, Edna became companion to her widowed aunt Maria Rees, of The Farm, Houghton, her mother’s early home. There she later married Ken Jones, and they had three children, Roger, Angela and Nigel, and one granddaughter Zoe.

After the second world war they moved to Surrey, where Ken worked as a pharmacist, returning to Wales for their retirement in 1981. Ken died in 1995 and Edna moved with her son Roger to Neyland.

Edna loved life and lived it to the full. Her family and friends will miss her sorely.

The funeral took place on June 5th at St Mary’s Church, Burton, followed by interment in the churchyard. Rev Paul Boyle officiated.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons, Milford Haven.

Miss J. Edwards

Neyland

St Clement’s Church, Neyland was overflowing with friends and relatives recently to celebrate the life of Jane Edwards, following her death on February 23rd, aged 46.

Family travelled from Canada and ex-colleagues came from Germany. Jane’s childhood friend Liz Gill came from Singapore. Born in Ystrad Mynach, Jane was brought up in Neyland, where her parents owned the pharmacy. She was a talented sportswoman and played school hockey for west Wales and had a trial for Wales.

After her education in Neyland and Pembroke Schools, Jane studied for her teaching degree.

She went on to teach in the Bristol area before moving to Germany where she taught in forces’ schools.

During her time abroad Jane never forgot her roots and she decided to return to Neyland almost 20 years later. Initially, she set up home in Cambrian Road before moving to live with her partner Ian in Hazelbeach. She worked with the local authority as a training adviser.

After returning to Neyland, Jane involved herself in a range of activities, such as Neyland Theatre Company, where she was highly regarded. She also enjoyed supporting rugby and was a regular at the rugby internationals, and also travelled extensively to distant countries.

Jane was also passionate about her family and was always delighted to spend time with her nieces and nephews.

The principal mourners were: Ian Swales (partner); John and Shirley Edwards (parents); Julian and Rhian Edwards, James and Maria Edwards (brothers and sisters-in-law); Marion and Julian Cornwell (sister-in-law and husband); Bethan, Glesni, Ioan, Dafydd, Eleri, Anna and Thomas (nieces and nephews); Sandra Jones, Marilyn and Tony Young, Wyn and Pauline Edwards (aunties and uncles); Karen, Nick, Lewis, Rhian, Luke, Claire, Rob, Lily, Sian, Tony, Paul, Pip, Mike, Nia, Alys, Nicholas, Nicola, Rebecca, Lewis, Katie, Joe, Liza, Lucy (cousins and families); Jayne Kavanagh (lifelong friend).

Rev Paul Flavell officiated at the service, supported by Canon Martin Likeman, after which interment took place at Neyland cemetery. The bearers were Nick Castles, Lewis Castles, Bertie Brown, Jonny Roach, John Henderson and James Owen.

There were family flowers only, with donations in lieu for Breast Cancer Wales, to be sent to Carol and Keith Jones, of Neyland Theatre Company. Tom Newing and Sons, Milford Haven carried out the funeral arrangements.

Mr B. Phillips

Haverfordwest

The death of Bill Phillips (Ting) occurred on May 27th at Highlands Avenue, Haverfordwest.

Bill was brought up in Fenton Villas and attended Fenton and Barn Street schools. He represented the Army Cadets in boxing which he enjoyed. In his youth he played football for Rosemary Lane youth club and the Red Dragons. He was a member of the Baring Gould Lodge of the RAOB for 46 years.

The well-attended funeral at Parc Gwyn Crematorium on June 5th, was officiated by Father Colin Bowen. There was also a moving RAOB ceremony.

The principal mourners were: Mrs Din Phillips (wife), Andrea and Robert (daughter and son-in-law), Paul and Nydia (son and daughter-in-law), Joel and Gemma (grandson and fiancée); Jenna and William (granddaughter and fiancée); Sam (grandson); Stanley Edwards (brother); John, Janet and Grenville, Susan and Wyn (nephews and nieces). Unable to attend were Lil Lealand and Novello Phillips (sisters).

The bearers were: Paul Phillips (son), Joel Phillips, Robert Horton and William Dixon.

Mrs. G. M. Broad

Pembroke Dock

The death occurred at Withybush Hospital on May 29th of Gertrude Maud Broad, ofCenarth Close, Llanion Park, Pembroke Dock. She was 88.

A native of Pembroke Dock, during the war she worked in the arsenal at Bridgend and as a nurse in Wrexham and Riverside Hospital, Pembroke and for many years in the school kitchens at Pennar Junior School.

Her main interests were her family, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She attended Darby and Joan, Good Companions as well as the Cleddau River day unit. She was a life-long member of St Patrick’s Church, Pennar.

Gertrude was a popular lady with a good sense of humour, but the death of her youngest daughter Jan Robertson in February this year was to prove too hard to come to terms with.

She was predeceased by her husband Donald Broad.

Family left to mourn are: Raymond Broad (son); Margaret and Kevin John (daughter and son-in-law); Wally Robertson (son-in-law); Doris Richards (sister); Ken Evans (brother-in-law); Lynsey Dewaine, Sarah John, Christopher Mason, Adrian John (grandchildren); Chelsi, Charli and Chaye Dewaine, Brandon and Tayla, Alfie, Mason, Ethan, John (great grandchildren); Susan and Peter Dawkins, Mary and David Kenniford, Colin and Heather Evans, Roger and Kath Russant, Donald and Monie Bettis, Lucy Mason, David Griffiths, Nathan John, Liz Bettis.

The service was held at St Patrick’s Church, Pennar, followed by interment at Llanion Cemetery. It was officiated by Rev Thelma Barber and the bearers were Keith Leonard, Robert Francis, Donald Bettis and Phil Morgan.

There were family flowers only with donations in lieu ofor Wales Air Ambulance to be sent to Mr Graham Thomas, 34 Charles Thomas Avenue, Pembroke Dock SA72 6UR.

Mrs. P. C. A. Palmer

Pembroke

The funeral took place recently of Patricia Carole Ann Palmer, of Coldwell Terrace, The Green, Pembroke, who passed away on April 22nd. She was 61.

Known as Pat to her friends, she worked until retirement as a cook at Riverside Home, Pembroke, where she enjoyed mixing with staff and visitors alike. Besides working in the kitchen, Pat also enjoyed doing work in the gardens. She enjoyed having her grandchildren around her and looked forward to school holidays when they would come and stay.

Before moving to Pembrokeshire with her late husband Graham Charles Palmer and children, she lived in London and Dorset. She started work as a seamstress and worked wonders with a needle. She would return to Dorset regularly to spend time with her mum who died in February of this year.

The service was held in Parc Gwyn Crematorium and was officiated by Rev Roger Jones. The bearers were John Palmer, Barry Palmer (sons); Dean Cardy (son-in-law); James and William Thomas (grandsons); Daniel Cardy (grandson).

The principal mourners and family left to mourn are: Jacqueline and Dean Cardy (daughter and son-in-law); John and Gerladine Palmer (son and daughter-in-law); Sarah Thomas (daughter); Barry (son); Lesley and Peter Self and family, Philliys and Chris Mayers and family, Sandra and Joe (sisters and brothers-in-law); Peter and Ali and family (brother and sister-in-law); Daniel, Zoe, Sophie, Chloe, Gethin, Carys, Chelsea, Ambyr, James, William, Jake, Lucy, Iwan, Olivia, Samuel and Morgan (grandchildren); Ellie Louise and Alfie (great grandchildren); Brian and Val Haynes, Malcolm and Sheila Palmer (brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law). Mr P. O. Rice

Cresselly

The funeral was held recently of Philip Owen Rice, who died at Withybush Hospital after a short stay, on May 30th. He lived at The Green Cottages, Cresselly and was 59.

He was a native of East Williamston and a builder, a former player with Narberth RFC and a former player for Cresselly Cricket Club.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Barbara Rice (wife); Janet Rice (daughter); Leslie Rice (brother); Clara Rice (sister); Shirley and Roger Harriman (sister and brother-in-law); Gerald and Jill Rice (brother and sister-in-law); Anne Mitchell (mother-in-law); Robin and Katherine (brother-in-law and sister-in-law); Paul and Peter Rice, Joanne Williams and Sian Joynson, Gareth and Neil Rice, Andrew and Martin Lee (nephews and nieces, great nephews and nieces), plus cousins and many friends.

The service was held at St Oswald and St Jeffrey Church, Jeffreyston followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn. It was officiated by Father Paul Davies and the bearers were Peter Rice, Neil Rice, Stewart Rice, Philip Merriman.

Mr J. Farquhar

PEMBROKE DOCK

The funeral of John Farquhar, Pembroke Dock took place at Parc Gwyn Crematorium on June 5th. After a long illness, he died on June 1st at Withybush Hospital.

Born in Aberdeen, he had three brothers and a sister, and when he left school he trained as a welder in the shipyards.

He later joined the army and served in Egypt in the Royal Engineers, making the rank of corporal. When he left the army, he married Margaret Booth in 1951 and had four children. With the oil industry booming he travelled to different parts of the UK erecting oil tanks always having his family with him as much as possible.

He arrived in Pembroke Dock in 1969 to work at Pembroke Refinery, and when his children started work, he decided to settle and he bought a house in Laws Street.

He was a very proud man who worked hard and did well by his family: John and Christine, Billy and Debbie (sons and daughters-in-law); Mary and Keith, Rona and Peter (daughters and sons-in-law); Rachel, Angela, Gemma, Anthea, Louise, Lewis, Lee, Dean, Rhiannon and Kai (grandchildren); Jack, Courtney, Craig, Leonie, Sinead, Shannon, Euan, Lee, Ellie, Sam and Kiera (great-grandchildren).

The bearers were Lewis, Lee and Dean (grandsons), Andrew, Steven and Martin (granddaughters partners). Unable to attend were family from Scotland due to poor health.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by John Roberts and Son, Pembroke Dock.

Mrs N. M. Folena

Haverfordwest

The death occurred on June 5th at her home in Merlins Bridge of Mrs Nesta Millicent Folena. She was 87.

Nesta was born in Haverfordwest in 1921. She met her husband Vic in 1946 and they married in 1947. They moved to Merlins Bridge in 1951 and were happily married for 56 years until Victor died in 2003. Nesta’s sister Molly died in 2006 and Dave (son-in-law) in 2007.

During the Second World War she worked at Trecwn ammunitions depot, Woolworths and Merlins Bridge Laundry.

Nesta’s interests were her home and her grandchildren.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Yvonne (daughter); Paul and Fiona (son and daughter-in-law); Samantha, Louise, Jordan and Shannon (grandchildren); Brian and Barbara, Ann, Charmaine, Peter, Andrew, Stephen, Mathew, Jane-Ann, Sarah, Gail, Mathew (nephews and nieces); John, Emlyn, Tina and Jane (cousins), together with friends of the family.

The service was held at St David’s and St Patrick’s Catholic Church, Haverfordwest, followed by interment at City Road Cemetery, and was officiated by Father John Patrick.

The bearers were Andrew, Stephen and Mathew Harding and James Evans.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and Son, Haverfordwest.
