Mrs. I. P. Tansey

Milford Haven

The death occurred peacefully at her home on June 24th of Iris Pamela Tansey, of 2 Trinity Place, Robert Street, Milford Haven.

A native of Milford Haven, Iris was 77 and worked for over 15 years as a dinner lady at St. Francis Roman Catholic School. Latterly she helped her sister-in-law in the paper shop in Pill Lane. A staunch member of St. Francis Church, she also loved travelling and helping at Havenhurst and the WRVS tea bar at Withybush Hospital.

The funeral took place on June 29th at St. Francis Church followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, Crematorium. Father Jay Jay Batiusta officiated at the service and Dilys Newing was the organist.

The bearers were her grandsons Paul and Adam La Rosa, Gareth and Martin Tansey and Bleddyn Rhys Taylor.

Predeceased by her husband Michael in 1996, she leaves to mourn: Theresa and Melo La Rosa, Pamela and Bleddyn Taylor, Carolyn and Andrew Postlethwaite (daughters and sons-in-law); Michael Tansey, Chris and Helen Tansey, Peter and Tina Tansey (sons and daughters-in-law); Paul, Adam, Bethan, Laura, Martin, Clare, Vicky, Lauren, Bleddyn, Nia, Rhodri, Kate and Amy (grandchildren); Shannon, Max, Aiden, Isabelle, Ethan, Ryan, Owen, Ieuan, Morgan, Dylan and Maggie (great grandchildren); Frank and Jean Stammars (brother and sister-in-law) and Peter Tansey (brother-in-law), New Zealand, who was unable to attend; Linda Howe, Marie and Fred Lamb, Janine and Duncan Webb (nieces and partners); together with other family and friends too numerous to mention.

There were family flowers only, donations in lieu if desired for the Paul Sartori Foundation may be sent to Mrs. T. La Rosa, 7 Priory Lodge Close, Milford Haven.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons, Milford Haven.

Mr. M. P. Sparkes

Fishguard

The death occurred at Withybush Hospital on June 10th of Michael Paterson Sparkes, of Penbanc, Fishguard. He was 72.

Michael was brought up in the Fishguard area, but moved to Swansea at the age of 15.

He went to Swansea University where he gained a degree in languages.

He took a teaching post in Fishguard county secondary school until his retirement due to ill health in 1988. He took a keen interest in local politics and was the first mayor of Fishguard and Goodwick. A faithful member of St. Mary’s Church, Michael held several offices with the church. His main interest was music and he sang with local choirs.

The funeral took place on June 17th at St. Mary’s Church and was followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn. The service was led by Rev. Don MacGregor assisted by Rev. Chancellor Gerwyn Morgan at Parc Gwyn.

Principal mourners were: Phil and Gwenfyl Davies and family, and Barry and Davena Moore and family.

The bearers were Colin George, Timothy Owen, Martin Davies and Tom Davidson.

There were family flowers only with donations in lieu if desired for Ward 10, Withybush Hospital c/o HSBC Bank, West Street, Fishguard.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Paul Jenkins and Sons, Fishguard.

Mrs. J. Rees

Newport

The funeral took place on April 29th of Jean Rees, of Parrog Stores, Newport, who died at her family home on April 23rd, aged 76.

Jean was born in Cardiff, and at the age of seven relocated to Newport, setting up home at Tycoch, Upper Bridge Street.

After leaving school Jean worked in the drapery trade and was an active member of Bethlehem Baptist Chapel where she taught in the Sunday School.

Jean and Vernon, her late husband of 42 years, successfully ran a grocery business on the Parrog for over 35 years and were blessed with two children, Glyn and Glenda-Jean.

A large gathering joined with the family in a thanksgiving service at Bethlehem Baptist Chapel, Newport. The service was led by Rev. Alwyn Daniels and the organist was Jean Young.

The burial took place at Brynhyfryd Cemetery, Newport. The bearers were John George, David Williams, Alun Young-Davies, Derfyl Williams, Brian James and Darren Scarr.

Jean leaves to mourn her son and daughter-in-law Glyn and Jenny; her daughter and son-in-law Glenda and Tim; five grandchildren, Amy-Jean, Catrin, Tom, Carys and Elin; and twin sister and brother-in-law, Joy and Bernard.

There were family flowers only with donations for the Noah’s Ark Appeal and the Newport branch of the British Legion being kindly received by Paul Jenkins and Sons, Fishguard.

Mr. F. J. G. Bird

Tenby

The death occurred at Park House Court Nursing Home, Tenby of Frederick Joseph Golding Bird (known as John), formerly of Narberth Road, Tenby on June 24th. He was 89.

He worked for 40 years with Barclays Bank, in the Manchester area, managing a sub-branch. He served with the Sherwood Foresters between 1939 and 1946.

His main interests were Tenby angling club and was treasurer for 20 years. He was a Liberal democrat candidate, life long member of the Methodist church, and was accompanied by his wife Muir on preaching appointments.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners were: Muir (wife); Mike Warden and Jan, Sally Metcalfe and Peter (second cousins); Lisa Bassett, Jemma and Tommy (Muir’s niece).

The funeral was held at Parc Gwyn followed by a service of thanksgiving at Saundersfoot Methodist Church which was led by Pastor Peter Morgan.

Donations in lieu of flowers if desired to the Army Benevolent Fund and/or RNLI.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by E. C. Thomas and Son, Stepaside.

Mr. J. M. Lewis

Pembroke

The death occurred at Withybush Hospital on June 22nd of Jeffrey Morton Lewis, of Bishops Lane, Pembroke. He was 68.

Originally from Pembroke Dock, he worked as an apprentice at Hancocks Shipbuilding Co, then Firth Cleveland Extrusions and Amoco Refinery, Milford Haven. He retired as a workshop foreman for Total Refinery, Milford Haven in 2004.

His main interests were rugby, gardening, walking and photography.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Miriam Lewis (wife); Alistair and Fleur Lewis (son and daughter-in-law); Melanie and Robert Hicks (daughter and son-in-law); Samara Hicks, Joy Lewis, Hamish Lewis and Iori Hicks (grandchildren); Bernard and Jean Lewis, Delroy and Eve Lewis (brothers and sisters-in-law); May and Ken Porteus, John Gettings, Ann Arthur (sisters and brothers-in-law); Ruth Cole (sister-in-law).

The funeral service was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium and was led by Ven. Graham Davies and the bearers were Philip Palmer, Steve Davies, Morgan Allen, Bryan Hicks, Mark Hicks and Neil Ralph.

Mr. T. L. Davies,

Eglwyswrw

The funeral of Tom L. Davies, Blaenbetws Bridell, locally known as Tom ‘Cwmbetws’, was held recently at Ebeneser Baptist Chapel, Eglwyswrw following his death on May 19th.

He was 83 years of age and one of the few remaining farmers that belonged to the era of working the land with horses. He spent his life following his passion for farming and horses, both having provided him with a living and much pleasure.

He was the third generation to farm at Cwmbetws, Eglwyswrw, which now benefits from the fifth generation. He was renowned as a committed and diligent master of the land and its produce.

Married to Doris in 1951, he was a loyal husband and a caring father to Ann, Delyth and John and proud grandfather to Elin, Mari, Lisa, Rhys, Rhodri, Rhian, Harri and Esther. He was also a respected father-in-law to Cerwyn, Robert and Bethan.

He was the senior deacon of Ebeneser Chapel where he dedicated and committed much of his spare time in his retirement. The chapel was filled on May 23rd as hundreds from all walks of life gathered to pay their last respects. The service was led by Rev. Eirian Wyn Lewis assisted by Revs. Huw George, John Roberts, Cannon Euros Thomas, John Lewis, Eric Williams, Roger Thomas, Chancellor Gerwyn Morgan, Eric John, Gwynfi Jenkins and Father Paul Mackness.

His granddaughters Elin, Mari and Lisa presented recitations from the scriptures, and the organist was Beti Williams. His fellow deacons Glyndwr Vaughan, Beti Thomas and Eirwyn Harries distributed leaflets.

Bearers were Ralph Vaughan, John Allison, Berwyn Thomas, Lloyd Jenkins, Wyn Thomas and Dilwyn Vittle.

Following the service a burial was held at Eglwyswrw Parish Church. Flowers at Ebeneser were provided by the congregation of the chapel and Mair Rees.

Donations received by Eirwyn Harries in memory to the sum of £2,700 are shortly to be donated to the Paul Sartori Foundation and the Fire Service First Responder in Cardigan.

The funeral director was Mr Colin Phillips, of Cardigan.

Mr. R. J. Berryman

Neyland

The death of Raymond John Berryman, of Riga Avenue, Neyland, occurred at Withybush Hospital on May 22nd. He was 72.

He was born in Cardiff, but brought up in Milford Haven. He worked mainly as a payroll manager for refineries and large construction companies and later became a self-employed book-keeper.

There was a private family service held at his house on May 29th, with the interment at Neyland Cemetery, which was attended by many friends and work associates. The service was led by Rev. P. Flavell and the bearers were Mark Palmer, Peter Palmer, Adam Palmer and Barry John.

The principal mourners were: Raymond and Lesley Berryman (son and daughter-in-law); Denise and Antony Davies (daughter and son-in-law); Amy Davies (granddaughter); Joyce Morgan and Joan Jones (sisters); Anno and Keith Absalom, Sonny Clancy (sister-in-law and brothers-in-law); Tony and Ann Howells, Fred Knapp (uncles and auntie); Linda, Natalie and Lee Morgan, Annette and Samantha Abbott, Rosalind Absalom, Christopher Jones, Mark, Penny, Lisa and Yasmin Clancy, (nieces and nephews); Sandra and Barry John, David, Mark, Peter and Adam Palmer, Yvonne Jones, Karen Davies, Pat and Cecil Curtis (cousins); Helen and Glyn Griffiths, Mavis, Bernard, Paul, Barrie, Michelle and Daisy-May Davies, Jayne Williams, Anne John, Debbie and Grant Lewis, Susan Mason (friends).

There were family flowers only with donations for Ward 10, Withybush Hospital being sent to Antony Davies, 22 Fern Rise, Honeyborough, Neyland, SA73 1RA.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by F. G. Rees and Son, Haverfordwest.

Mr. N. R. Phillips

Walton West

The funeral took place recently of Norman Rees Phillips, of The Grange, Walton West, Little Haven, who died at Withybush Hospital on May 27th. He was 74.

He was born in Pembroke Dock, the eldest son of Oliver Rees Phillips and Gertrude Phillips. He was pre-deceased by his twin sister Mary and stepmother Phyllis.

He attended Pembroke Dock Grammar School, where he played for the senior rugby team, and he then studied structural engineering at Cardiff technical institute.

During his working life he was a trainee engineer at Pembrokeshire rural district council, a structural engineer for Sir Alfred McAlpines and Son, during which time he worked on major bridge and motorway projects around the country.

He returned to Pembrokeshire in 1982 and his last job before retirment was the first manager of the Riverside Market in Haverfordwest.

His main interests were his family, gardening, cricket (lifelong supporter of Glamorgan Cricket Club), rugby, hill walking, travel, caravanning and philately.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Joan Phillips (wife); Bob and Claire Phillips (son and daughter-in-law); Eden and Josie Phillips (granddaughters); David and Eleanor Phillips (brother and sister-in-law); Wayne, Alice, Edward, Richard and Charlotte Phillips (nephews and nieces); Glenys Phillips (sister-in-law); John and Anne Fowles, John Phillips, Elaine Lunt, Denise Walter, David and Angela Phillips, Lesley and Michael Clarke, Doris and Stanley Richards (cousins).

The service was held at Tabernacle Chapel, Haverfordwest and was led by Rev. C. Gilham followed by internment at City Road Cemetery, next to his parent’s grave.

There were family flowers only with donations in lieu to the Ward 10 Trust Fund, Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and Son, Haverfordwest.
