Mr R. W. Haggar

Tenby

Family, friends, former teaching colleagues and students attended the funeral at St Mary’s Church, Tenby, on Friday, October 16th, of Roy William Haggar.

A former head of English at Tenby’s Greenhill School, Mr Haggar died on October 2nd at Coventry Hospital, after being taken ill while visiting Stratford on Avon. He was 75.

Born in Hampshire in 1934, Roy moved to Pembrokeshire at the age of six when his parents, Pamela and Leonard Haggar, took over the family cinema in Main Street, Pembroke. He was the eldest of six children, including Tony, John, Vicky, Susan and Dinah.

Educated at the East End School in Pembroke, and Haverfordwest and Pembroke grammar schools, he later became a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery and trained with the Parachute Regiment. After a spell working in the family cinema business he trained to become a teacher at Trinity College, Carmarthen, and joined the English department at Greenhill School in 1969. After only a year of teaching he was appointed head of department, a post he held until his premature retirement in 1989.

Roy was an inspirational teacher, who brought out the best in his pupils. He was perhaps best known for his love of drama and he directed or co-directed two school plays every year.

Shakespeare was always his greatest love and whenever possible he took pupils to Stratford to see productions at the Royal Shakespeare Company. The irony that he took ill while in Stratford will not be lost on a generation of pupils who went on his many school trips.

As a young man Roy was keen to be an actor. He was born into a well-known theatrical family, extending back ten generations — the great-grandson of the British film pioneer, William Haggar. His father and grandparents persuaded Roy that there were far better ways of earning a living than treading the boards.

His time in the spotlight came in later years when he became well known locally for his abilities as an amateur actor taking part in several plays with The Tenby Players.

His other interests included Tenby Sailing Club, of which he was a former commodore, and The Friends of Tenby Cottage Hospital, for whom he served as treasurer.

He was also in great demand as a speaker — giving talks and demonstrations about his great grandfather’s life and works — and recently took part in a film about the history of Pembroke.

Roy was married to Maggie, his ‘best friend’ and ‘soul mate’, for 50 years and they had three children: Sarah Batten; Nick and Tom.

They were the principal mourners at the funeral service, along with his son-in-law Fred, daughters-in-law Jo and Petra, and grandchildren Charlie, George, Annie, Will, Herbie, Kitty, Connie, David, Eden and Frankie.

The readings were given by John Bevan (friend and former colleague), Bob Reeves (friend), Newman Vincent (friend and former colleague) and Josh Richards (friend, former pupil, and member of the Royal Shakespeare Company).

The officiating minister at both St Mary’s Church and Parc Gwyn was Rev Michael John. He was assisted at the Narberth service by Rev Rhobert Pattinson, another of Roy’s former Greenhill colleagues.

The bearers were Tim Haggar, Sam Moon, Danny Dyer and Philip Cheverton.

There were family flowers only, with donations in lieu, if desired, for the Dame Ellen MacArthur Trust to W. and M. J. Rossiter and Sons, The Old Rectory, The Norton, Tenby, who carried out the funeral arrangements.
