Mrs M. H. Roach
Haverfordwest
Marilyn Heather Roach, of Chellow-Dene, Fishguard Road, Haverford-west, died on January 24th at Withybush General Hospital. She was 66.
Marilyn was a native of Haverfordwest, and worked as a fashion model in London when she was young. Later on in life Marilyn and her husband owned the Withybush Hospital retail shop on Fishguard Road.
Her interests included photography, floral art and fundraising for charity.
Marilyn always showed an artistic flair. Throughout Pembrokeshire, Marilyn created many floral art displays in flower festivals and for special occasions such as weddings and parties, especially for family and friends.
Marilyn was also a keen gardener and used many of the flora and fauna from her garden in her flower arrangements. She was a member of the Floral Art Society and also passed on her knowledge by teaching the subject.
Marilyn was also well equipped in the art of sugarcraft. She would spend hours creating beautifully decorated cakes using royal icing, sugar flowers, modelling and piping.
Marilyn was a member of both the British Diabetic Society and Parkinson’s Society. She organised many fundraising events and throughout her life had raised large amounts of money for both organisations.
Marilyn was a lifelong member of the Hill Park Baptist Church, Haverfordwest.
She doted on her husband, Lynne, until his death last year. Their love for each other was clear to see.
Family left to mourn are: Mark and Simon Roach (sons); Tina and Angela (sisters-in-law); Miriel Roach (mother-in-law); Beverly and Byron Palmer (brothers); David and Garnet Roach (nephew and niece); Niamh Roach (granddaughter).
The funeral was held at Hill Park Baptist Church and Prendergast cemetery on Saturday January 30th. The minister was Gareth Edwards.
The principal mourners were: Morwel Palmer, Margaret Vandyke, Margaret Phillips, Roy Mathias, Mike and Teleri James, Jensie Palmer, Tracy Palmer, Ann-Marie Palmer, Dawn Palmer.
Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to Diabetes UK, Macleod House, 10 Parkway, London, NW1 7AA.
The funeral director was Roy Folland and Son, Haverfordwest.
Mr D. Howells
St Davids
David Howells, of Millard Park, St Davids, died on February 17th, aged 68.
David started his teaching career at the Royal Liberty Grammar School in Essex for three years and then went to Welshpool Secondary School for a further three years. He moved to St Davids and was head of the maths department for 27 years at Ysgol Dewi Sant.
A keen sportsman, he played and enjoyed rugby, squash, tennis and badminton.
He leaves to mourn: Rita (wife); Sharon and Les, Linzi and Phill (daughters and sons-in-law); Michael, Daniel, Hannah and Thomas (grandchildren), together with uncles, aunts and cousins.
A large congregation attended the funeral on February 23rd at St David’s Cathedral. It was followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, Narberth.
The service was officiated by Rev Jonathan Lean and the bearers were Les Benning and Phill Morris (sons-in-law) and Arfor Jones and Wallace Jones (brothers-in-law).
There were family flowers only, with donations for Bro Cerwyn day unit and St David’s Cathedral to the funeral director, Bernard Mathias, 62 New Street, St Davids.
Mrs M. F. Cooke
Milford Haven
The death of Margaret Florence Cooke occurred at Withybush Hospital on her 75th birthday, December 14th, 2009.
Margaret was born in Cardiff, the youngest of eight children and part of a very close family. During the war she lost her father and three siblings, but still managed to have happy memories of those days and enjoyed her early 20s in the big city.
Margaret and Denis married in 1960 and would have celebrated 50 years of marriage in January.
They moved to Milford Haven and John Lewis Street, where Margaret made many good friends and neighbours.
When she first arrived in Pembrokeshire, Margaret worked as a secretary at Esso refinery until her first child was born and then remained at home until all the children were at school. Margaret and Dennis were steward and stewardess at Pembrokeshire Yacht Club for a few years with their good friends Terry and Carol Nichols.
Margaret loved children and some of her happiest years were spent working in the nursery at The Meads School, Milford Haven. She retired in 1995.
Margaret loved her family and always enjoyed family gatherings. The real joy of her life was the arrival of Evan in 2008, her only grandchild. Her four step-grandchildren will remember her as very generous and warm.
The funeral took place in December at St Francis RC Church, led by Father Jaime Bautista, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn Crematorium.
The bearers were: Mike Davies, Terry Nichols, Tim Allen (friends), and Bill Charlton (brother-in-law).
Family left to mourn are: Denis (husband); Brian and Elizabeth Taylor (son-in-law and daughter); Simon and Louise Cooke (son and daughter-in-law); Steve, Louise and Evan Capon (son-in-law, daughter and grandson); Bill Charlton (brother-in-law); Lena Dean (sister-in-law); Kay Dean (sister-in-law) plus nieces and nephews and Marcia and Pat Cooke (sisters-in-law).
There were family flowers only, with donations in lieu for the NSPCC and Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Spittal
THE death of Dylwyn Saunders James, of Moorlands, Spittal, occurred on February 16th, at South Pembs Hospital, after a 16 week stay. He was 81.
Dylwyn was born at Penlan, Puncheston, brought up at Hayog, Ambleston and farmed at Moorlands and Penfeidr since 1956. Along with his family his greatest interest was farming, in which he took an active part until his recent ill health.
He also enjoyed watching sport, gardening and reading and was proud of his four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Gwen in 2001 and his brother Vince in 2006.
Family left to mourn are: Annette and Gareth (daughter and son-in-law); Richard and Anne (son and daughter-in-law); grandchildren Michael and Katie, Claire, Steven and Rhys, sisters-in-law and brother-in-law Evelyn, Mary and Norman, and many friends and family too numerous to mention.
A large congregation attended the funeral on February 22nd, at St Mary’s Church, Spittal.
The service was officiated by Rev David Rees and Rev Roger Griffiths.
The bearers were: John Lewis, Nigel Evans, Cyril Bowen and Graham Lewis (neighbours and friends).
The organist was Anita Smith and church flowers were arranged by Liz Reed.

AMANDA Jobson died at her home on February 20th, aged 47.
Mandy was a much-loved daughter to Connie and Tommy, a beloved sister and friend.
Her adult life was spent attending Portfield SAC where she made many friends who in time she came to loved as an extended family.

Narberth
Glenys Irene Brown, of Jesse Road, Narberth, died on February 13th at South Pembs Hospital, after a long stay. She was 89.
She was a native of Narberth, where she had lived most of her life in the family home in Castle Street.
During the war years she served in the WAAF.
Her interests included gardening, knitting, TV, crosswords and the company of her grandchildren. In her later life she attended coffee mornings for senior citizens.
She was predeceased by her husband George Brown (Jock) in 1998.

Haverfordwest
Peter Gwynne Phillips, of Merlins Crest, Haverford-west, died at Withybush Hospital on February 6th. He was 66 and known to his friends as Floppy.
A requiem mass and celebration of Peter’s life was led by Father John Patrick and Deacon Tony Lawrence on February 16th, at St David’s and St Patrick’s Church, Haverfordwest.
Dorothy Frazer (niece) read the lessons. The bearers were Martin Thompson, Mark Evans, Sul Rees and Robin Folland.
Cremation followed at Parc Gwyn.

Mr I. M. Daye Begelly THE death of Iorwerth Melvyn Daye, known as Yorrie occurred at Withybush Hospital on February 11th. He was 77.
Yorrie, a native of Thomas Chapel, Begelly, worked within the farming community before becoming an agricultural/plant contractor. He worked until his retirement in 1997.
Yorrie loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren.
He enjoyed playing darts and skittles and represented many pubs and clubs over the years.
He also enjoyed watching sport, especially rugby, football, Grand Prix and bowls. He supported many local sports teams and made the goal posts when Kilgetty ladies hockey team was initially set up in 1977.
Yorrie was predeceased by his wife Liz in 2001.
He leaves to mourn: Ann and Tony (daughter and son-in-law); Gareth and Robert (sons); Valerie and Glyn, Christine and Max, Debbie and Steve (daughters and sons in law); and his grandchildren, Aimée, Allys, Dafydd, Rebecca and Zachary.
The funeral took place on February 19th at Parc Gwyn, Narberth.
It was officiated by Rev Elwyn John who also read out a personal tribute and a poem given to him by the family.
The bearers were Glyn Williams, Graham Evans, Martin Hughes and Dai Scourfield.

Mr R. L. L. Jones
Pembroke
The death of Ronald L. L. Jones, who was staying at Ashdale Residential Home, Pembroke, occurred at Withybush Hospital on February 16th. He was 89.
A native of Pembroke Dock, he was a painter and also a machinist in Strattford-Upon-Avon, and he served in the army during the Second World War.
He moved back to Pembroke Dock when he retired and his main interests were reading and his dog Rex.
He was predeceased by Dorothy Jones in 1996.
The principal mourners were: Shirley and Graham John, Susan Lewis, Emma and Glyn Nevatte, and staff from Ashdale Residential Home.
The service was held at St Teilo’s Church, Pembroke Dock, followed by interment at Llanion Cemetery.
It was officiated by Rev Nigel Thomas, and the bearers were Stuart Treharne, Paul Hay, Terry Brace and Arthur Evans.
There were donations in lieu of flowers to Ashdale Residential Home, Pembroke, which can be sent to Graham Thomas, 34 Charles Thomas Avenue, Pembroke Dock, SA72 6UR.

Pembroke Dock
The death of Michael Robert Crocker (Crocka), of St Patrick’s Road, Pembroke Dock, occurred on January 13th at Withybush Hospital. He was 22.
He spent three years at Pembrokeshire College and was a carpenter for a local construction firm.
He played rugby, football and cricket for Pembroke School, rugby for Pembroke Rugby Club and football for Hundleton, Pennar Robins and Pembroke Boro.
He played played darts for the First and Last pub in Pembroke Dock and was also a keen Manchester United supporter.
Family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Lorraine and Robbie (mum and dad); James (brother); Emily (girlfriend) and family; Ken and Verona (great aunt and uncle); Tony and Beattie, Raymond and Sara, Gwyn and Chris, David and Sharron, Paul and Tracy, Gordie and Donna, Andy and Liz, Ian and Sian, Gail and Vanny, Christine, Yvonne (aunties and uncles), plus cousins too numerous to mention.
There was a very large gathering at the funeral, which was held at St John’s Church, Pembroke Dock, followed by interment at Llanion Cemetery. It was officiated by Nigel Thomas.
The bearers were Sean Meaney, Darren Griffiths (cousin), Carl Lewis, Lee Walker, Wayne Skyrme, Peter Hillier.

Pembroke Dock
The funeral took place recently of Auriel June Davies, of Queen Street, Pembroke Dock, aged 55.
Auriel’s family was her main focus in life, enjoying time with her two daughters, six grandchildren and seven stepsons and daughters.
There was a large gathering of family and friends at St John’s Church, Pembroke Dock, where the service was led by Rev Shirley Rayner.
Auriel’s grandchildren Emmajune and Kirsty also read personal poems to their grandmother.
Principal mourners are: Reginald (husband); Maria and Rachel (daughters); Stephen, Kirsty, Emmajune, Harvey, Keenan and Harrison (grandchildren); Temple, Tony and Timmy (stepsons); Mandy, Dawn, Susan and Janet (stepdaughters) and other family members too numerous to mention.
The bearers were: Stephen Davies, Simon Bevans, Austin Bevans, Steven Bevans, Graham Muller and Timmy Davies.

Mrs M. F. Owen
Hundleton
Morwyth Florence Owen, formerly of Hawkstone Road, Pembroke Dock, and latterly of Hundleton, died after a short illness on January 25th.
She leaves her daughters Elizabeth and Valerie, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Born in 1917, she was the daughter of George and Florence Davies. Her father was a well-known school master at the county school and they lived in Argyle Street.
Morwyth trained as a teacher and after qualifying, she taught in Gravesend, Kent throughout the Second World War, returning to Pembroke Dock to take up a post in Albion Square School in 1950.
In 1954 Morwyth married Captain Frank Meyrick Owen, a well-known local estate agent, and continued teaching at Albion Square until her daughters came along. She returned to teaching in the early 1960s, this time at Llanion School, where she remained until the 1970s.
Morwyth Owen (or Miss Davies) will be fondly remembered by many former pupils.
Frank died in 1990 and in 1995 Morwyth moved to live with her daughter Liz and her family in Hundleton.
A well-read, quiet lady, she enjoyed her books, television and crosswords and until recently walking the family dog and her companion, Phoebe.
Principal mourners are: Liz Greenslade and Val Riley (daughters); Jonathan, Linzi and James, Marc, Sam, Laura and Barry, Adam (grandchildren and partners); David Greenslade (son-in-law); Rose Davies, Vanessa Owen (sisters-in-law); Peter Davies, Rosemary and Richard Gilbert, Jamie Owen, Richard Owen, Claire Owen, Sara Owen, Mary Bessenich (nephews and nieces); Mary Lorimer, Margaret Evans, Janet and David Mercer (cousins) and many friends of the family.
The funeral took place on February 5th at St John’s Church, Pembroke Dock.
The bearers were David, Jonathan and Marc Greenslade, Sam and Adam Riley and Richard Owen.
Jamie Owen gave the eulogy and Peter Davies read the lesson.
Unable to attend were Jasey Brace and Sonny Davies (great-grandchildren); Huw Owen, Jemma Owen, Selena Owen (nephew and nieces); Anthea Shelley, Charlie, Alfie and Macy Shelly (Jonathan’s partner and her children).
The burial was at Llanion Cemetery.

Mr D. Evans ACIB
Pembroke Dock
The death of Derek Evans, of Hampshire Drive, Pembroke Dock, occurred on February 14th at Withybush Hospital, after a short stay. He was 75.
Originally from Neyland, Derek joined TSB Bank in Haverfordwest aged 16, before his national service between 1952 and 1954, where he was an radio operator with the RAF.
In 1963, Derek joined Lloyds Bank where he worked for nearly 30 years before his retirement in 1991, working in Solihull, Swansea, Llandrindod Wells and Monmouth.
Following his retirement in 1991, Derek and his wife Mary had many happy years in Herefordshire but in 2003 they moved to Pembrokeshire.
His interests included golf, being a committee member at Clyne Golf Club, Swansea, and in later years a member at Milford Haven Golf Club.
Following his retirement he attended Hereford Art College where he completed a fine arts diploma. In recent years Derek was a member of art groups at Albion School, and U3A at Carew and Neyland.
Derek was recently a member of Pembroke Probus Club. He was also a prolific reader and played Canasta with two groups of local friends. He also enjoyed walks on the beach with his dog, Shanko.
Family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Mary Evans (wife of 46 years); Greg and Jacqui Evans (son and daughter-in-law); Caroline and Stephen Smith (daughter and son-in-law); Joseph Hughes (brother-in-law); John and Julie Butler (brother-in-law and wife); Emma and Lucy Butler (nieces); Robbie and John Kaye (cousin and husband); Audrey and John Morgan (cousin and husband); Jill Davies (cousin).

The funeral was held at Parc Gwyn and was officiated by Rev Shirley Rayner.

Mr S. J. Bowen
Lamphey
The death occurred on February 8th of Stanley John Bowen, of Flemish Court, Lamphey, at Caldey Grange Nursing Home, Pentlepoir. He was 87.
A native of Lamphey, when he left school he worked on a number of farms including Herberts Moor and Winters Hall. He finally worked for the highways department of Pembrokeshire County Council, from where he retired in 1987.
He enjoyed gardening, painting and decorating, ploughing matches, preparing livestock for and attending agricultural shows.
Family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Dorothy (wife); Brian and Jill, Barry and Julie (sons and daughters-in-law); Clare, Helen, Simon and Samantha (grandchildren); June (sister); Vincent (brother).
The service was held at Parc Gwyn, Narberth, followed by interment at Lamphey Church Yard. Rev Martin Cox officiated.
The bearers were Barry Bowen, Simon Bowen, Graham Thomas and Terry Brace.
There were family flowers only, with donations for Caldey Grange Nursing Home to E. C. Thomas and Son, Archways, Green Plains, Stepaside, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.
MR E. J. HOLT
HAVERFORDWEST
Ernest John Holt died at Withybush Hospital on February 15th after a long illness. He was 98.
Jack, as he was known, was born at Bush Row, but had lived for 97 years at 14 Prendergast Hill.
A human archive of knowledge about his beloved ‘Harfat’, Jack was known throughout the county, having worked for many years as a country postman, joining the Post office as a telegram boy at the age of 14.
He was best known to many as a drummer in various dance bands, including the West Cambrian Syncopators, the County Dance Band, Savoy Players and the Music Hall Players.
He enjoyed dining with friends at the Simpson Cross Lunch Club where he played his drums for the last time at Christmas. He also regularly attended the Kensington Hospital re-unions at St Brides.
Jack was one of the first musicians to play in the upstairs ballroom at the County Theatre, built in 1935, and during his long career he played in virtually every town and village venue in west Wales and beyond. Jack served with the RAF in Egypt, North Africa, Italy and Sicily during the Second World War.
He returned to the Post Office after the war, delivering mail in the Croesgoch and Camrose areas, in the latter meeting his wife Flo at Keyston.
She died on his 90th birthday.
After taking early retirement, Jack became a driving instructor. He also worked for Freestone Tyres and Heribert Wilson.
Jack played football for the Cambrian All Whites XI which won the Ellis Cup in 1935 and he loved all-year-round bathing at Newgale until he was well into his 80s.
He loved driving, and his little grey Morris 1000 Traveller was recognised throughout the county, particularly at the annual vintage and classic car rallies.
The funeral at Parc Gwyn Crematorium was led by Canon Geoffrey Gwyther, of St David’s Church, Prendergast.
Left to mourn are: Joan and Richard (daughter and partner), Joanna Osgood (granddaughter); Matthew Osgood (great-grandson); Norma Kift and Richard Holt (niece and nephew) Jenny and Darren Barrett (great-niece and husband); cousins Jean and Alf Parkinson and Maxine and John Rolls.
Unable to attend were Stephanie Osgood (great-granddaughter), Jean, Katie and Robert Holt, Rachel, Alison and Isabelle Harry and Anthony Parkinson.
Many friends had travelled long distances to attend.
