Mrs M. Rees

Milford Haven

The death of Margaret Rees, of Dewsland Street, Milford Haven, occurred at Withybush Hospital on June 5th. She was 83.

Originally from Lower Priory, Milford Haven, Margaret was a housewife. She enjoyed walking in the countryside, gardening and horseracing.

She had lived with her eldest son and daughter-in-law for the last two-and-a-half years.

Family left to mourn are: David and Dorothy Rees (son and daughter-in-law); Sheila and Bobby Mayhew (daughter and son-in-law); Phillip and Christa Rees (son and daughter-in-law); John (son); Paul (son); Kevin (son); Andrew, Alison, Annie and Edward, Stephen, Pauline and Katie, Karen, James, Peter and Shannon, Jackie, Paul, Shane and Craig, Lindsay, James, Zak and Elise, Robert and partner and children, Neil, Lisa and children, Carl, Sandra, Kevin and Alina, Michael, Rhia and children; Sandra and Chris (friends); Margaret and Glyn (friends); Podge and Julie (friends); Jenny, Mike and staff (Robeston Cross nurseries) plus relatives and friends too numerous to mention.

Unable to attend were Carl and Sandra (grandson and wife) in Germany.

The service was held at St Andrew’s Church, Robeston West followed by interment in Milford Haven Cemetery. It was officiated by Rev Alan Chadwick and Rev Martyn Evans. A tribute was given by family friend, Rev Martyn Evans.

The bearers were Robert Gainfort, Neil Gainfort, Michael Gainfort and James Craig.

Donations for the Alzheimer’s Society may be sent to Suite 18, Cedar Court, Haven’s Head Business Park, Milford Haven, SA73 3LS.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons, Milford Haven.

Mrs E. G. Williams

Pembroke Dock

Edna Grace Williams, of Apley Lodge, Apley Terrace, Pembroke Dock, died on June 5th. She was 89.

Originally from Pembroke Ferry, Edna worked for a number of years at the woollen factory on London Road. When the power station at Pembroke was being built. She worked as a cleaner for the workmen’s chalets. Before retirement she worked as a cleaner at Bush School.

During the war she served as a land girl, carrying out light labouring duties and helping to build/maintain the airport in Haverfordwest.

She was predeceased by her husband Alexander George Williams in August 1992.

Family left to mourn are: Derek and Carole (eldest son and wife); Stephen and Kim (son and daughter-in-law); Alex (granddaughter); Billy (great grandson).

The service was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium and was officiated by Pastor Hugh Michael.

The bearers were Stephen Williams, Derek Williams, Paul Hay and Stewart Treharne.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by E. C. Thomas and Sons, Pembroke Dock.

Mr J. E. Griffiths

Merlins Bridge (formerly of Walton East)

John Elwyn Griffiths died at Withybush Hospital, after a long stay, on May 5th. He was formerly of Walton East and then lived at De Clare Court, Merlins Bridge. He was 91.

John lived at St Mary’s Avenue, Walton East, Clarbeston Road and in his younger days worked for the forestry commission and later as a car valet for many garages in and around Haverfordwest. His last job before retiring was at Nicholas’ Garage, Haverfordwest.

His main interests were spending time with his family and his garden. John was a member of Walton East Church.

He was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth Ann Griffiths (Betty) in 2001 and his son David (Dai) Griffiths.

Family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Malcolm and Gill (son and daughter-in-law); Deborah, Stephen, Nichola, Karen, Paul, Joanne and Ryan (grandchildren); Gareth, Sarah, Andy, Steve, Rachel (husbands, wives and partners of grandchildren), plus 11 great grandchildren.

The service was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium and his ashes were later interred with his late wife at Walton East church. Rev N. Cale officiated and the bearers were Dennis O’Connor, Paul and Ryan Griffiths, Stephen Griffiths and Sean Jones.

There were family flowers only. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and Sons, Haverfordwest.

Mrs F. S. Culleton

Milford Haven

The death of Frances Sheila Culleton occurred on May 11th at Torestin Nursing Home, Tiers Cross, after a long illness. She was 82.

She was a native of Milford Haven and was brought up in Greville Road.

She devoted her life to her husband and her family of 11 children. She was an accomplished cook and loved to bake cakes for special occasions. She enjoyed knitting and crochet.

She was always at her happiest when surrounded by her children and grandchildren. She had a warm and friendly personality.

She was predeceased by her husband William Joseph Culleton in 1988. He was a member of the Burma Star Association and Sheila proudly accompanied him to attend parades and functions.

Later in life she enjoyed playing darts and she collected a number of trophies.

The latter years of her life were spent at Gumfreston Care Home and at Torestin Nursing Home, where she was cared for by the staff.

Family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Billy and Ruth Culleton, David and Janice Culleton, Alan Culleton, Paul Culleton and Sarah, Phyllis Stewart, Kathleen and Clive Marrison, Sonia Culleton and Joyce Treadwell, Margaret Fletcher, Dennis Fletcher, Dianne Rogers, Marie Culleton (sons and daughters together with their families). There are also many grandchildren, great grandchildren and nine great great grandchildren. Unable to attend was Terry and Donna Culleton (Nova Scotia).

The service was held at North Road Baptist Church followed by interment in Milford Haven Cemetery. Rev Paul Bartlett officiated.

The bearers were Kane, Martin, Stephen, John, Sam, Wayne, Andrew and Brian (grandsons), Kyle, Lee, Andrew and James (great grandsons).

There were family flowers only, with donations for the Pembrokeshire Alzheimer’s Society, Suite 18, Cedar Court, Havens Head Business Park, Milford Haven, SA73 3LS.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons, Milford Haven.

Mr J. Hughes

Red Roses

John Hughes, of Lonsdale, Red Roses, Whitland, died at home on May 19th, after a long illness.

Born in Sardis, Kilgetty, on September 17th, 1937, John attended Stepaside and Narberth schools before starting his working life as a builder.

John then moved on to work for the milk factory in Whitland, where he collected milk from local farms, initially from churns and later to bulk tankers. He was a member of Kilgetty Buffs Lodge for many years and was also an active blood donor up until his illness.

His main interests were rugby and his garden. He would spend a lot of his time tending the lawns and flowers, in particular roses, for which he had a passion. His display of flowers drew many comments.

John was a gentle, good spirited and humorous man He would often play jokes, but always without malice.

The principal mourners are: Ann (sister); Trevor and Pam, Malcolm and Jane, Paul and Debbie (stepsons and daughters-in-law); Shirley and Jeff, Celia and Graham, Mandy and Mark (step-daughters and sons-in-law), together with his grandchildren and Haydn Allen (best friend).

A private service was held at the family home, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, Narberth.

The service was officiated by Rev Elwyn John, with a poem read by John Evans (friend). The bearers were Keith Thomas, Brian Thomas, Jeff Thomas, Brian Mannering, Graham Powell and Mark Barraclough.

There were family flowers only. Donations in lieu for ward ten, Withybush Hospital and Narberth Health Centre may be sent to E. C. Thomas and Son, Archways, Green Plains, Stepaside, who carried out the funeral arrangements.

Mrs S. Cartwright

Roch

Sonja Anne-Marie Cartwright died at home on May 16th, after a long period of ill-health. She was 82.

A native of Germany, Sonja was a housewife and enjoyed listening to music and playing the piano. She was a keen gardener and also a knowledgeable plantswoman. She also liked doing the Daily Telegraph crossword.

Sonja was predeceased by her husband Peter and also her eldest daughter Barbara in 1982.

Family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Elizabeth and John (daughter and partner); Anna and Gerrard (granddaughter and husband); Nick, Tom and Morgan (great grandchildren).

The funeral service took place at Parc Gwyn, Narberth, and was officiated by Rev Bryon Jones and Rev Michael Rowlands. Her ashes were interred at St Mary’s Church, Roch.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and Sons, Haverfordwest.

Mr D. D. Bowen

Sketty, Swansea (formerly of Ambleston)

David Denzil Bowen, of Sketty, Swansea, died on May 14th at Morriston Hospital. He was 79.

He spent his younger days in Wallis, Ambleston, before he joined the Merchant Navy, during which he travelled around the world. On leaving the Merchant Navy, he joined the catering staff of British Rail where he stayed until his retirement.

He loved to tell stories of his travels. He enjoyed socialising with his friends in the Uplands and Sketty area of Swansea and he also enjoyed visiting his sisters in Pembrokeshire before their deaths.

The funeral service took place on Saturday, May 22nd, at Parc Gwyn, Narberth. It was officiated by Alex Mayne. The ashes were later interred at the family grave at Beulah, Little Newcastle.

The principal mourners were: Norrie Bowen (sister-in-law); Betty and Billy Smith, Stan and Sandra Gibby, Graham and Pat Gibby, David and Lesley Rees, Darwel and Jasmin Rees, Peter Bowen, Irene Lado, Gilbert and Dennis Jenkins, June Bowen and Stasia Danks (nephews and nieces); Sian and Paul Moseley, Jason Rees and Andrea Cloud (great nephews and nieces), plus cousins and friends.

Unable to attend were Les and Pam Gibby, Bernadette and Paul Welsh (nephews and nieces).

There were family flowers only. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and Son, Haverfordwest.

Mr A. J. Davies

Castlebythe

Arthur John Davies died suddenly at his home at Parsonage, Castlebythe, Puncheston, on Saturday, May 15th. He was 67.

On leaving school, John worked on farms in Woodstock and Camrose and also worked for J. E. Lawrence, Clarbeston Road, collecting milk. He then went contracting before starting a successful business based at Rhos Park, Letterston, as an agricultural mechanic for 26 years.

A very large gathering attended the funeral service at Parc Gwyn, Narberth, on Saturday, May 22nd.

The service was led by Rev Aled Jenkins. The bearers were John Price, Denzil Lewis, Ken Thomas and Dyfrig Williams (close friends).

Left to mourn are: David and Mark (sons); Sara, Keira and Sam (grandchildren); James and Irene (brother and sister); Derek and Elizabeth (nephew and wife); Ian (nephew); Valerie and Parry (niece and husband) together with other family members too numerous to mention.

Margaret Griffiths was unable to attend.

There were family flowers only, with donations, if desired, for the British Heart Foundation and coronary care unit, Withybush Hospital.

These may be sent to Paul Jenkins and Sons, Feidr Castell, Fishguard, SA65 9BB, who carried out the funeral arrangements.

MRS S. L. Jelley

Narberth (formerly of Milford Haven)

Susan Lorrain Jelley died on June 1st at Blaenmarlais Care Home, Narberth, aged 95.

She previously lived at Westhill Avenue, Milford Haven and was predeceased by her husband Edward.

She leaves to mourn: Christine and Edwina (daughters, in Canada); Garry, Geoffrey and Denise (sons and daughter); Frank, Rick, Marie, Ann and Paul (sons and daughters-in-law); Nichola and Kevin, Alex and Beth, Zenna and Mick, Claire and Chris, Daniel and Tessa, Samantha, Susan and John (grandchildren, spouses and partner); William, Emily, Ethan, Bodhi, Liam, Molly, Oliver and Joe (great grandchildren); Maud, Ellen, Violet and Bette (sisters), also nieces, nephew and families in the UK, America and Australia.

The funeral was held on Wednesday, June 9th, at Parc Gwyn, Narberth.
