Mr A. J. Phillips

Milford Haven

Alan James Phillips, of Robert Street, Milford Haven, died on July 15th at Withybush Hospital. He was 59.

Mr Phillips enjoyed all sports. He supported Arsenal and Swansea City football clubs, enjoyed horse racing and liked a flutter on the horses.

His main interests also included his family, especially his two grandchildren, Toby and Maggie-May.

Mr Phillips retired early due to ill-health in 1996 but had previously worked for John Brothers, Phelps and Owens and Pembrokeshire County Council.

The funeral took place at Steynton Church on Monday, July 19th.

The principal mourners and family left to mourn are: Shelagh (wife); Alanna (daughter); Ian (son-in-law); Toby and Maggie-May (grandchildren); June (sister) and Dorian (nephew).

Venerable Dr John Holsworth officiated the service, which was followed by interment in Steynton Churchyard.

There were family flowers only, with donations in lieu of flowers for the ward 11 stroke unit, Withybush Hospital, to Alanna Sturley, 4 Greville Road, Milford Haven, SA73 2LT.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons, Milford Haven.

Mr R. D. James

Haverfordwest

Robert David James, of Jockey Fields, Haverfordwest, died at Withybush Hospital on June 19th. He was 35.

His main interests were listening to music and watching soap operas on TV.

Family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Ian (father); Iris (nannie); Moyra and Jack, Joyce and Tony, May (aunties and uncles); Jane and family, Sarah, Lyn and family, David, Jess and family, Stephen, Nicky and family, Rebecca, Kevin and partners, Terence and Sue, Mike, Maureen, Tom, Maureen and family (cousins) and other cousins and friends too numerous to mention.

The service was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium and was officiated by Rev Geoffrey Eynon. The bearers were Jack James, Lyn Davies, Lee Jenkins and Bruce Mathias.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and Son, Haverfordwest.

Mrs J. P. Davies

Milford Haven

Joan Pauline Davies, of St Anne’s Drive, Hakin, Milford Haven, died at home on June 24th. She was 80 and formerly of Lowestoft.

She started her working life at Milford Steam Trawling Co Ltd and went on to work at Milford Haven Town Hall and then the Torch Theatre.

Her main interests were her family, home and garden and she also did voluntary work with the adult learning scheme.

She was a member of the Mother’s Union, a member of St David’s Church, Milford Haven and also a member of the WI.

Family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Michael and Caroline Davies (son and daughter-in-law); Susan and John Haughey (daughter and son-in-law); Cassandra, Charles, Daniel, Christopher, Andrew, Matthew and Jenny (partner) (grandchildren); Jean Seago (sister), Alan and Yvonne Thompson (brother and sister-in-law); Margaret Thompson (sister-in-law) and also relatives and friends too numerous to mention.

The funeral service was held at St David’s Church, Hubberston, on Tuesday, July 6th.

It was officiated by Rev Alan Chadwick, Rev Peter Jones and Rev Bill Lewis, and followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn.

The bearers were Charles Davies, Matthew Haughey, Christopher Haughey and Phillip West.

There family flowers only, with donations to the Paul Satori Foundation and Macmillan Cancer Care.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons, Milford Haven.

Mrs W. Hewitson

Hook

Winnie Hewitson died on July 3rd at Withybush Hospital, following a brief stay on ward ten. She was 82.

Born and bred in Hook, Winnie worked in various jobs, her last one being for the Inland Revenue until her retirement.

Her main interests were gardening, looking after her daughter’s two dogs and playing bingo.

In 1949 she married the late Doug Hewitson who was serving in the RAF at Roch. They had two daughters, Anne and Yvonne (who predeceased her in 2008) and one granddaughter Janette, who lives in America.

Family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Anne (daughter), Janette (granddaughter), Brenda Picton (sister), Joan and Gordon Rees and Wendy and David Howell (sisters and brothers-in-law), Enid Rowlands (sister-in-law) and many nieces and nephews. Unable to attend were Malcolm and Norma Rowlands (brother and sister-in-law).

The funeral service was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium and was officiated by Rev Steven Woods. Her ashes will be interred with her late husband and daughter.

Donations in lieu of flowers for ward ten, Withybush Hospital, may be sent to Wendy Howell, 6 Furzy Crest, Hook, SA62 4NE.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Glyn Thomas and Son, Freystrop.

Mrs L. J. Davies

Sheffield (formerly of Pembroke Dock)

Lynda James Davies (nee Barger), formerly of 43 Prospect Place, Pembroke Dock, died at Loxley Park, Sheffield, on June 28th with her younger son, Richard, at her side.

Lynda was the wife of the late T. W. (Tom) Davies, organist, choirmaster and shoe retailer.

She was born in 1917 in Pembroke Dock, daughter of the late Norman Barger and Gwendoline James and grand-daughter of the late William and Eliza James, butchers of Dimond Street.

She gained a scholarship to Haberdashers School for Girls at Monmouth, where she became head girl in her final year, and achieved distinction in music.

She gained her matriculation in 1935 and joined her cousin Joan Hinchliffe, of Pembroke Dock, at Avery Hill Teacher Training College in Kent.

Lynda met Tom at Avery Hill and their friendship blossomed into romance. They were married in Pembroke Dock in 1942. After a brief honeymoon at Chepstow, Tom went off to war in North Africa.

When Tom returned from in 1945, they lived in Hawkestone Road, Pembroke Dock. Their first child Paul arrived in 1946; Richard was born in 1950 and Margaret followed in 1951.

The couple were founders of the arts club, and organised many musical events with leading soloists and chamber groups.

She returned to teaching in the early 1960s at Monkton School and transferred to the new Grove School in Pembroke. She retired in 1977.

Lynda and Tom enjoyed hosting dinner parties, and relaxing tours of France. They enjoyed outings with the gardening club and translated the splendour they found into their own beautiful garden.

She nursed Tom through the illness that culminated in his death in 2001, and afterwards remained in Prospect Place until ill health forced her to move near her son Richard, in Sheffield. One of her last outings was to attend the wedding of her grand-daughter Bethan.

Her main priority was her family - Tom (together with her sister-in-law, Mollie) and her three children and later her four grandchildren.

The funeral took place July 6th at St John’s Church, Pembroke Dock with the Venerable Rev Graham Davies officiating.

Family mourners are: Paul and Julia Davies (son and daughter-in-law) and their two sons, Owain and Huw; Richard and Verity Davies (son and daughter-in-law) and their son Tom and daughter Bethan and her husband Ben; Margaret Davies and Denise Clarke (daughter and her civil-partner); Derek and Vivienne Moore (cousins); Julia Stuart (cousin); Rosemary and Bill Harries (cousins). Interment was at Llanion Cemetery.

There were family flowers only. Donations in lieu for Dementia UK and Admiral Nurses may be sent to Graham Thomas, 34 Charles Thomas Avenue, Pembroke Dock, SA72 6UR.

Funeral arrangements were carried out by E. C. Thomas and Son, Pembroke Dock.

Mrs L. Griffiths

Saundersfoot (formerly of Fishguard)

The funeral took place on July 8th of Lena Griffiths, of “Golygfa’r Mor”, Sandyhill Road, Saundersfoot (formerly of The Wallis, Fishguard) who died on July 1st at Withybush Hospital aged 96.

The service took place at the Chapel of Rest, Feidr Castell, Fishguard followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn Crematorium and was officiated by Rev D. Carl Williams assisted by the Rev. John Roberts.

Lena was born and brought up in Fishguard and lived there all her life until she moved to live with her son and daughter-in-law in Saundersfoot following the death of her husband Jackie in 2004. She worked at Siop y Bobl, Ocky White and Paris House in Fishguard for many years.

She leaves to mourn: Howard (son) and Rosalind (daughter-in-law); grandchildren Siân (husband Jason) and Martin (wife Katherine) and great grandchildren Rhys and Charlotte; Kenneth Bowen, Eileen and Colin Mitchell, Gillian and Fred Mallin and Sylvia Griffiths (nephew and nieces), and her sister-in-law Nancy Griffiths. Bearers were Martin Griffiths (grandson), David Vittle, Gwilym Cornock and Jimmy Nicholas.

There were family flowers only. Donations for Hermon Chapel, Fishguard may be sent to Paul Jenkins and Sons, Feidr Castell, Fishguard, SA65 9BB, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

Mr R. W. H. Merry

Kilgetty

The death of Ralph William Hardwick Merry, of Oakfield Drive, Kilgetty, occurred at Withybush Hospital on June 21st. He was 81.

Originally from Great Yarmouth, he worked for 25 years at Texaco as a safety officer. He also served in the Grenadier Guards in Germany.

His interests were bowls, reading, being a freemason and he was one of the ‘Thursday Boys’ in Pembroke. He attended St Mary’s Church, Begelly and St Michael’s, Pembroke.

He was predeceased by his wife Olwyn Merry.

Family left to mourn and principal mourners are: June (sister); Nigel (nephew); Sharon (niece) plus many close friends and neighbours.

The service was held at St Mary’s Church, Begelly, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn. It was officiated by Rev Sarah Geach and Canon Roger Jones. The bearers were Graham Thomas, John Jones, Arthur Evans and Terry Brace.

There were family flowers only with donations for the Paul Sartori Foundation and the Wales Air Ambulance to E. C. Thomas and Son, Archways, Green Plains, Stepaside SA67 8LT, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

Miss C. Thorne

Letterston

A large gathering attended the funeral on June 28th of Carmen Thorne, of Letterston, who died on June 22nd at Withybush Hospital.

The service at Parc Gwyn Crematorium was officiated by Rev Canon Roger Griffiths.

There were family flowers only, with donations in lieu for the ward ten trust fund, Withybush Hospital, and Tenovus to Paul Jenkins and Sons, funeral directors, Feidr Castell, Fishguard, SA65 9BB, who carried out the funeral arrangements.
