Mr C. Phillips

Haverfordwest Clive Phillips, of Barn Farm, Old Hakin Road, Haverfordwest, died on June 25th at West Wales General Hospital, Carmarthen. He was 54.

Clive attended Bolton Hill School near Tiers Cross until the school’s closure. He then transferred to Barn Street Juniors, finally completing his education at Haverfordwest Grammar School. After leaving school he attended Pembrokeshire Technical College following a day release course in agriculture.

Farming was Clive’s vocation, it was his life. He became a proactive member of Tiers Cross Young Farmers’ Club after leaving school, in which he made many lifelong friends. He also met his future wife Becky at YFC.

Clive worked alongside his parents Jack and Iris at Barn Farm before and after leaving school. Clive’s drive, determination and vision ensured that the original 90-acre farm expanded to the present 240-acre mixed dairy business. He dedicated his life to this cause. After Clive’s parents died he worked in partnership with his devoted wife Becky.

Clive fought a long battle with illness for the last nine years, during which he continued to work long and demanding hours and bring up a close and loving family. Clive transferred his love of nature and his infectious sense of humour to his sons.

The extent of Clive’s popularity and the high regard in which he was held in the local farming community was evident by the hundreds of mourners at the funeral.

Clive leaves to mourn: Becky (wife); Tom and James (sons); Beverley (sister); Alan, Linda and Roy and family and Allison and family (brother and sisters in-law), Barbara and Jeff (mother and father in-law), aunties Mary, Becky, Mary and uncles Roy and Owen and their families and many other relatives and friends.

The service was led by Ven Dr J. Holdsworth at Steynton Church, during which a eulogy was given by a friend of the family, Rev Martin Evans. Clive’s sons Tom and James also paid tribute to their father during the service.

Rev Evans led the interment at Popehill Cemetery, Johnston.

There were family flowers only, with donations for the staff fund, Derwen ward, West Wales General Hospital, Carmarthen to Mrs B. Davies, Rosebank, East Williamston, Tenby.

Roy Folland and Son carried out the funeral arrangements.

Cllr D. M. Davies

Pembroke

The funeral of Councillor Dillwyn Morgan Davies took place on July 22nd at Priory Church, Monkton, where the family were joined by a large gathering of friends and community representatives. He was 83.

The youngest of three children of the late John and Margaret Davies, of Trimsaran, he attended Llanelli Boys Grammar School, where Welsh was his first language. He embarked upon a brief career in the bank, interrupted by service on the Royal Navy destroyer, HMS Cossack.

While employed at the National Provincial Bank, Pembroke, he met Winifred ‘Peggy’ Rowlands, the youngest daughter of the headmaster of Monkton School, the late Mr J. S. S. (Stanley) Rowlands and his wife, Irene, also a teacher. This, together with a chance meeting in Brecon with a school inspector, led to him retraining at Trinity College, Carmarthen, to qualify as a teacher.

In 1950, he married Peggy, whose love and support was paramount throughout his chosen vocation. His first appointment was teaching mathematics at Pembroke Dock Grammar School in its original Argyle Street location, followed by a position at Albion Square School, where he became deputy headteacher. Subsequently, he was appointed headteacher at Llanion School and finally, he returned to Argyle Street, but this time as headteacher of Pembroke Dock School, the post from which he retired in 1991.

The year 1963 marked the beginning of his 47 year commitment to local politics as a borough, district and town councillor. He was elected mayor of Pembroke on four occasions between 1992 and 2003. Several awards of merit were conferred upon him by Pembroke Town Council for his outstanding contribution to the community over 40 years. He was a key figure in the twinning of Pembroke town with Bergen town in Germany, and members of that community have also recognised his commitment to forging links and promoting friendships between the towns.

From 1990 to 1991, he served as chairman of South Pembrokeshire District Council. In July 1996, this body gave him the title of Honorary Alderman of Pembrokeshire. He was typically modest and discrete about such accolades. In 1981 and again in 1991, he was chairman of Milford Haven Port Authority.

A Freeman of the Borough, Alderman Davies’ life was dedicated to the community and was guided by years of experience and a wealth of knowledge particularly in the fields of education and local history.

He gave his time voluntarily to many other organisations, including being a governor of the Priory School, Monkton, and of Pembroke Comprehensive School, chairman of Pembroke Castle Trust, and he held the loyalty and friendship of those members in high esteem.

He was also president of the Pembrokeshire Association of local councils; Pembroke Old People’s Welfare Committee president of the Pembrokeshire Association of Local Councils, Pembroke Old People’s Welfare Committee, president of Monkton Swifts Football Club, Communities First, secretary of Monkton Priory Parochial Church Council and church choirmaster. He administered various charities including the Louisa Sanders Charity Trust and Doctor Jones’ Charity.

Many tributes attested to his wisdom, integrity and valued guidance, have been made by ex-pupils, colleagues and representatives of the numerous committees and voluntary organisations with which he was associated.

His dedication to serving his community never detracted from his love and devotion to his family.

It is with his dear wife Peggy who predeceased him last year, that his ashes were interred on July 24th, in the Priory churchyard in the presence of his three much loved and totally devoted daughters, Jacqueline, Janet and Joanne, and their immediate family members.

Family left to mourn are: Jackie and Malcolm Crossman, Joanne and Gordon Bain (daughters and sons-in-law); Janet and Griff Gigler (daughter and grandson); Sue Reynolds, David and Judith Reynolds (nephew and nieces); Tom and Hazel Rees, Nans Binding, Diana Williams, Graham and Gwen Rees, Phillip, Owen, Eiron and David Rees (cousins).

Unable to attend were grandson Robert, his wife Danielle, Lily and Ella Crossman (great grandchildren) of Australia; grandsons Brennig and Bobi Dillwyn Bain; son-in-law Jeff Gigler; John Reynolds and Betty, Nagib Ghafar (nephews and niece); Rosemary and John Llewellyn (cousins).

The bearers were Griff Gigler (grandson); Councillor Clive Collins (Pembrokeshire County Council); Councillor Wyn Jenkins (Pembroke Town Council) and Phil Lloyd.

There were family flowers only, with donations, if desired, for ward ten, Withybush Hospital. These may be forwarded to John Roberts and Son, Pembroke Dock, who carried out the funeral arrangements.

Mr C. F. Absalom

Haverfordwest

Colwyn Fitzgerald Absalom (known as Gerald), of Highgrove Residential Care Home, Hawthorn Rise, Haverfordwest, died on July 18th following a brief illness. He was 94.

The son of Edward and Bertha Olive Absalom, and brother of Rev Hugh Pryse Absalom and Captain David Garrett Absalom, he was born and raised in Haverfordwest, where he remained a lifelong resident.

Through his family’s business, Mr Absalom became acquainted with the building trade, before his employment at Haverfordwest Town Council, where he received training as an architectural draughtsman.

However, his main passion was cricket and in his youth he specialised as a bowler. He served the Haverfordwest Cricket Club as a scorer for many years, until physical frailty, due to age, overcame him.

To honour Mr Absalom’s long affiliation with Haverfordwest Cricket Club, club members joined in raising a glass to his memory on July 31st, the day of this year’s Harrison-Allen Bowl Final, being played between Haverfordwest and Carew.

It was an annual event that was always of keen interest to him. He leaves to mourn his brother, David Garrett Absalom, and nephew and nieces, Michael, Judith and Ursula.
