Mrs I M Terry Llangwm A large gathering of family and friends joined together at Emmanuel Church, Merlins Bridge on Friday 22nd July to celebrate the life of Iris May Terry of Tecumseh, Foxhall, Llangwm, who died peacefully at home on July 13th after a short illness which was borne with dignity and great courage.

Iris, who was 82 years of age, was born in Birmingham, the youngest of three sisters.

She worked on Wyman’s Bookstall on New Street Station in Birmingham and it was whilst working there that she met her husband George.

She moved to Pembrokeshire in 1969 with her family and quickly became integrated into village life by becoming a member of Llangwm WI.

During her working life she was employed by FW & The Copper Kettle, but will be remembered by most for working at the Haverfordwest Agricultural Co-op, originally based in Quay Street before becoming Clynderwen Farmers in Johnston where she was a hardworking, cheerful member of the workforce.

When her husband was diagnosed with MS, Iris retired from work to become a full time carer and devoted herself to looking after George and her family.

She looked after her grandsons Simon and Sam from when they were babies and throughout their schooldays becoming a familiar family face in the playground and making friends with the mothers and grandmothers she met there.

When it was discovered that Hyperbaric Oxygen was beneficial to MS sufferers, Iris, together with George and a number of others, decided to fundraise to bring a chamber to Pembrokeshire and her association with HOPE Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre Began.

She was one of the founder members and was delighted when enough funds had been raised to realise their ambition which saw the chamber installed and the charity born.

She became its first treasurer – a post which she held for nearly 20 years.

She was so happy that she was well enough to attend the 25th Anniversary Dinner at the Plas Hyfryd Hotel in April this year.

She was deeply involved with other local charities, the Carers’ Associations, Arthritis Care, and she was a staunch supporter of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

She could always be relied upon to help in any way she could, be it fundraising or raising awareness of all these charities.

Her main interest outside of her family was her garden which she tended with loving care.

When she was no longer able to manage it, she still maintained it with help, and all those who worked in her garden became good friends sharing cups of tea and biscuits as well as her passion for flowers.

Family left to mourn are: Paul (son), Christine (daughter), Caroline (daughter-in-law), Michael, Georgina, Ruth, Simon, Sam and Kathryn (grandchildren), Conner, Amelia, Lorena and Vincent (great grandchildren).
