Mrs F.M.James

(formerly of Tenby)

Florence Mabel James, known as Cis or Cissie, formerly of 5, Lady Park, Tenby died on September 20th at the Belvedere Residential Care Home where she had lived for the past four years.

The funeral took place on September 30th at St. Johns Church, Tenby where Cis had been a faithful member for over forty years. The service was conducted by the Reverend Nanette Lewis-Head followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, Narberth.

Cis was born in Pembroke Dock, she was the youngest child of Harding and Alice Harries, sister to Stanley and Ivor. Her father was born in Steynton, Milford Haven whilst her mother originated from Leicester. Cis’s father was the Manager of The Maypole grocery store in Pembroke Dock. She lived there until the age of eight after which the family moved to Reynalton when her father bought the village shop.

Cis attended Albion Square School in Pembroke Dock, later Loveston School and the Narberth Grammar School.

She moved from Narberth, where she excelled in most subjects, particularly mathematics, she became a pupil teacher, starting at Lamphey School and going on to teach at Martletwy, Ludchurch, Loveston and Jeffreyston. She undertook courses in PE and dance at Loughborough College during this period. Outside school she became Girl Guide Captain for the Cresselly Pack and taught country dancing in village halls. She took great pleasure in giving poetry readings at various events, which continued well into her nineties, she had passed a number of Elocution examinations in her youth.

She married Henry (Harry) James at Loveston Church in February 1942. Harry had been born in Tonypandy, Rhondda but the James family returned to Pembrokeshire in the 1930s to farm at Loveston. Harry was a Chief Steward in the British (later BP) Tanker Company, their children, Kathleen and Richard, were born in 1944 and 1946. After the war Cis was able to enjoy a number of voyages with Harry to the continent and to the Middle East.

Cis and Harry made their home and raised their family in Narberth, staying there eighteen years. Cis’s mother, Alice Harries, lived with the family in Narberth and Tenby for 16 years.

Cis was always active in the life of the community: attending Narberth Congregational Chapel, treasurer of the WI (attending their national conferences) and acting with the local amateur dramatic group. Later she returned to teaching as a supply teacher in junior and secondary schools including a period at The Avenue Centre, Tenby. In1964 Cis and Harry moved to Lady Park, Tenby. This was the start of a new chapter in their lives as Harry had retired from the Merchant Navy. As they had been in Narberth, they were both active in Tenby life.

They had both joined Tenby bowling Club where Cis went on to regular club and county success, women’s Captain of The Five Arches Club, a County Player and County Selector and also took part in a national final with Mair Marquiss in Worthing. One of her greatest friends, Gladys Gray, was both am important co-player as well as being an arch rival! Cis played bowls into her late eighties.

Harry died in 1982 but Cis continued to take a wholehearted part in the life of the community. She was an active member of St Johns Church as an Elder, Christmas Club treasurer, choir member, loyal member of The Women’s fellowship and Iona Worship. She was also a member of Tenby Townswomen's Guild for over twenty five years, a founder member of the Monday Club, performed Gilbert and Sullivan. For many years she practised Yoga and Country Dancing and was very skilful at sewing and knitting and a good cook Harry and Cis enjoyed many holidays in Europe, and also Canada and Swaziland to visit family. They, and later she, spent much time with her children, Kathleen, in Lamphey, and Richard in Wiltshire taking great pleasure in her grandchildren and their activities. She continued to have the same affection for her great grandchildren.

Cis continued to live independently and healthily until she was 91 but, due to failing health, moved into The Belvedere Residential Home in 2007 where she was well cared for. She was a woman of remarkable qualities, a loving and supportive wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, a loyal friend who readily made friends, good company and companiable, kind hearted, well respected and liked for her warmth of character, energetic and capable of facing any challenge; she was steadfast in all she undertook.

The family left to mourn are Kathleen and Tony Brown (daughter and son-in-law), Richard and Jackie James (son and daughter-in-law), Jonathan Brown, Robert Brown, Sarah James and Matthew Wild, Brigid James-Murray and Dr. Ben Murray (grandchildren and spouses), great-grandchildren Henry James, Emily Winder, Koyuki Brown, Sylvia Wild and Elin Murray.

There were family flowers only with donations to St. Johns Church, Tenby and Tenovus -Tenby Branch.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by W. & M.J. Rossiter & Sons Ltd, Tenby.

Mrs. G.M. Bushell

Walton East

After a short illness Gwyneth Maud Bushell of Walton East, Clarbeston Road died at Withybush Hospital on September 1st. She was 86.

Gwyneth was one of five children of the late James and Maud Hancock, born and brought up at Thornbush, Camrose. Following an education at Camrose North and Taskers School for Girls Gwyneth worked for a few years at Bangor College farm at Aber, Caernarvonshire. She was a member of Keeston YFC and later joined Haverfordwest club when she lived and worked there. It was then that she meet David and they married in 1952, making their home at North East Farm, Walton East. As well as helping on the farm she supported and took part in local community events, she was a member and past President of Clarbeston Road WI and became a deacon of Walton East CM Chapel.

Although Gwyneth enjoyed cooking and crosswords, her main love was gardening and this showed in the lovely garden at Meadow Rise where they retired to. Regular caravan holidays were thoroughly enjoyed by her and David and they had been to Southern Ireland this June. She was a caring person who loved visiting friends and family.

Left to mourn are David (husband), Anthony and Lynda (son and partner), Eleanor and Malcolm MacPhee (daughter and son-in-law), Marion Mathias (sister), Rosalind and James Bushell (grandchildren), Gillian Hancock (sister-in-law), Joan Bushell (sister-in-law), Sian Bushell and many nephews and nieces with their wives and husbands, great nephews and nieces and many other relatives, close friends and neighbours.

The large funeral was held at Walton East CM Chapel and was officiated by Rev. William Owen, assisted by Rev. Nick Cale, Mr. John Evans and Miss Nan Warlow. This was followed by a cremation service at Parc Gwyn officiated by Rev. William Owen. The bearers were Stephen Harries, Mark Harries, Dennis O’Conner and Geoffrey Davies.

There were family flowers only with donations in lieu of Narberth Health Centre or Walton East Chapel and sent to Mr. D.Harries, Walton Mill, Clarbeston Road. Funeral arrangements were by Roy Folland and Son, Haverfordwest.

Mr. David John Thomas

Haverfordwest

The funeral took place of Mr David John Thomas on September 20th at Parc Gwyn Crematorium. "Dai" as he was affectionately known to all his friends and David John to his family was born in Bryn, Port Talbot where his parents had a small farm. He started his working life at 14 years old down the local pit. He was a very hard working man who was always there for his family and friends. He passed away on September 11th, aged 85. It would have been his 63rd wedding anniversary, but his beloved wife Nancy pre-deceased him in 2005 after a long illness.

He leaves to mourn, his five children Mr Jeffrey Thomas, Mrs Mair Griffiths, Mr Gerwyn Thomas, Mr David John Thomas and Ms Eira Bhaduri. He also leaves his beloved grandchildren Mrs Sarah Roberts, Mr David Thomas, Mrs Sally Owen, Mr David Catterall, Mrs Rosalind Walker, Mr Andrew Thomas, Mr Gareth Thomas, Mr Lee Thomas, and Mr Scott Thomas. He had four greatgrandchildren Josh, Nia, Betsy and Tristan.

Dai was equally proud of all his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Also present were many members of our family and friends too numerous to mention all.

Mr Colin Verdun Burne

Hakin

Mr Colin Verdun Burne died at Withybush Hospital on September 22nd. He lived in Dairy Park, Hakin and was 89.

Originally from Feilding, New Zealand, he was carpenter and joiner by trade, working in the family building firm before coming to the UK in the 1950's.

Colin met his wife when they became pen pals during the war. He then came to Britain in the early fifties when they met and fell in love. They married and settled in St Neots, Huntingdonshire before coming to Milford Haven in 1969.He then worked as a Coxswain with D V Howells and Sons, on the Milford Haven Waterway before retiring.

He served in the New Zealand Air Force during the war in photography and reconnaissance.

He was a keen photographer, belonged to the Milford Bowling Club before his failing eyesight forced him to give up. He belonged to the luncheon club, Hakin, Pensioners Voice until failing health made it difficult to attend. He also attended the Milford Day Centre.

He was predeceased by his wife, Vera Burne twelve years ago.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Pat and Stephen Phillips (daughter and son-in-law); Marie and Jamie, Lisa and Gareth, Nigel and Cathy (grandchildren and partners); Debbie and Mike McCaffrey (niece and husband); Dan and Elizabeth (great nephews and their wives); Lisa and Wayne Phillips (niece and husband).

Unable to attend Mrs Joan Davies (close friend); Liam and Laura McCaffrey, Bruce and Mary Burne (brother and wife, New Zealand); Shirley and Colin Scadden (sister and husband New Zealand), plus numerous nieces and nephews.

The service was held at St Davids Church, Hubberston followed by internment at Thornton Cemetery and was officiated by Reverend Alan Chadwick. A lovely poem was chosen by Colins family in New Zealand and read by Rev Alan Chadwick, during the service.

The bearers were Stephen Phillips, Nigel Phillips, Mike McCaffrey, Dan McCaffrey and Jamie Garrity.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons, Milford Haven.

Mrs Eleanora Maria Morgan

Haverfordwest

The death occurred at Withybush Hospital on September 29th of Mrs Eleanora Maria Morgan of Pope Hill, Haverfordwest. She was 84.

Originally from Graz, Austria, she worked at the county hospital, Haverfordwest as a domestic cleaner and later to the newly built Withybush Hospital until early retirement due to problems with her eyesight.

Ella’s main interests were first and foremost her family, here in Pembrokeshire and also in Austria with whom she kept in almost daily touch. She was also a keen gardener and formerly had an interest in bowling.

She was predeceased by her husband Kenneth Alan Morgan in 1991.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Caroline Davies (daughter); Michael (son-in-law); Cassandra (granddaughter); Charles (grandson); Anni (sister, unable to attend, living in Austria).

The service was held at St Davids and St Patricks Church, Haverfordwest followed by internment at Pope Hill Cemetery, and was officiated by Father John Patrick.

The bearers were Charles Davies, Philip Williams, George Petty and Paul Rees.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons Ltd, Milford Haven.

Mrs Janet Morgan

Hakin

The death occurred on September 21st at the home of Mrs Janet Morgan, of Woodbine Way, Hakin (formerly of Summerhill). She was 52.

Originally from Hereford she was a housewife and mother and her main interest was her family.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Norman (husband); Ashley (son); Katie (daughter); Danii (daughter); Alfie (grandson); Phill (stepson); Chris (brother) together with her extended family.

Family and friends met at St Elidyr’s Church, Amroth to pay their own personal respects to Jane, and Canon Butler made a moving tribute, which was concluded by some supportive words by Elizabeth Treharne.

The bearers were Ashley (son); Eddie (son-in-law); Chris (brother) and John.

There were family flowers with donations if so desired for the Macmillan Cancer Support c/o E C Thomas and Son, Funeral Directors, Archways, Green Plains, Stepaside who carried out the funeral arrangements.
